We answer the questions: What is the Max Level, will it increase, and what are possible leveling sources in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
During the recent Q&A on Discord and various interviews, developers gave us interesting information about leveling, level cap, and how gameplay will look in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Also, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be released in the fall of 2024 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Max Level in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The maximum character level in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is 50. Moreover, this game introduces an extensive skill tree system inspired by Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 12, allowing for significant customization through various skills and traits. Players can choose from three specializations within their class skill trees. Each class focuses on different elements, for example, mages can gain proficiency in elemental magic, melee combat, or necromancy. Companion characters also feature unique skill trees adjusted to their individual personalities, backgrounds, and abilities, providing options to enhance their performance in combat.

In previous Dragon Age games, particularly “Dragon Age: Origins” and “Dragon Age: Inquisition,” leveling up involved completing main quests and side quests, defeating enemies, and exploring the world to find collectibles.

- Level Cap: 25-35 (depending on DLC) – Players needed to accumulate 186,000 experience points to reach level 25.

Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Level Cap: 27 (with Trespasser DLC) – To reach this level, players need 791,384 experience points
- Sources of XP: Main quests, side quests, combat, exploration, collecting shards, and other open-world activities.
- Unique Mechanic: Power points were required to unlock new areas and progress in the story.
Possible Leveling Sources in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
On the other hand, Dragon Age: The Veilguard focuses on handcrafted, story-driven side quests and curated content. Unlike Inquisition, it eliminates open-world collectible hunts and the progression-blocking power mechanic from the War Table. Instead, advancement and leveling are integrated into the story and character development.
However, compared to previous games, the max level in Dragon Age: The Veilguard doubled from the Inquisition.
The Rook got around 10 XP points per encounter during the gameplay preview, filling 10-15% of the level 1 bar. While this is still early in the development, and those numbers may change, the leveling process seems relatively slow. However, it can also mean a long journey, hours of gameplay, and a lot of content in the upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard game.
Overall, while the core of leveling through quests and combat remains, with the shift towards curated content in The Veilguard, developers aim to enhance narrative engagement and player choice.
Can Level Cap Increase in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
In previous Dragon Age games, the max level has increased through downloadable content (DLC).
Dragon Age: Origins
- Original Level Cap: Around 25-35, depending on the player’s choices and completionist efforts.
- Increase: The max level did not officially increase, but the “Awakening” expansion allowed players to continue leveling up past the original cap, effectively extending the game’s progression.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Original Level Cap: 20
- Increase: The max level was increased to 27 with the release of the “Trespasser” DLC. This expansion provided additional endgame content and new challenges, justifying the increased max level to allow players to develop their characters further and face tougher opponents.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Consequently, these examples suggest that, depending on the game’s success and the developers’ plans for post-launch content, Dragon Age: The Veilguard could potentially see a level cap increase through future expansions or DLCs.
How to level up fast in Dragon Age: Inquisition
If you’re playing Dragon Age: Inquisition to prepare for the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, then the best way to level up fast will be to do all of the side quests, including the companion side quests and advisor missions from the war table.
Furthermore, while you are out exploring always take an extra moment or two to read all of the books, notes, plaques, letters, and other materials that you discover. Many of these will unlock codex entries and nearly all of them will give you at least a little bit of EXP. It might not seem like much, but they will add up over the course of the game. Additionally, some letters can also unlock new side quests that you won’t be able to pick-up in any other way.
Finally, you can also earn EXP by researching creatures with Minaeve in Haven. You can find her inside of an office just outside of the war room, and you are initially introduced to hear and the research system through the Know Thy Enemy quest.

The max level for Dragon Age: The Veilguard is quite a bit higher than most of the other previous games in the series. Consequently, this will likely allow players to earn more skill points along with their levels. More skills, abilities, traits, and passives can be unlocked and you an ‘travel’ farther out on the skill tree than before.
