What is Hermit Background?
Hermit is a background in Baldur’s Gate 3, and it represents their proficiencies, where the character comes from and what their life was like before. NPC characters, including your companions, will recognise your Hermit origin and your manual abilities, often asking you for help with repairs. You can also use your trading and persuasion skills to influence others. Being a Hermit can occasionally earn enemies but most likely friends even if you preferer your solitude.
You were once sworn to seclusion and continue to prefer solitude over the chaos of society.

What are Hermit Proficiencies?
In addition to the role-playing aspect, the background defines proficiencies, giving you a slight bonus to dice rolls and success in checks. Proficiency is what your character is good at and what knowledge they possess. This background’s default proficiencies are Religion, Insight, History, Perception, and Medicine. Your Hermit proficiency features are Medicine and Religion.
Religion is an Intelligence skill that will help you with the following checks:
- Practices of secret cults
- Religious hierarchies
- Deities
- Rites
- Prayers
- Holy symbols
Medicine is a Wisdom skill that will help you with the following checks:
- Recognise and Diagnose an illness
- Help and heal a companion
- Stabilize a dying companion
Should you choose Hermit in Baldur’s Gate 3?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, you should choose Hermit if it fits your character and you like it. Backgrounds have defined proficiencies, while classes have a list of skills they can be proficient with, and you can pick only two or three. You are a Hermit, and the game will reward you for religion checks, heal your companions and other characters. So make sure it’s how you want your character to act before you make a final decision.
How Inspiration Goals Work Baldur’s Gate 3?
Further, in Baldur’s Gate 3, your Hermit background allows you to complete special goals that will award you with inspiration that you can later utilise when playing the game. When you perform an action that is authentic to your loner’s origin, your character will be inspired.
