Developed by Avalanche Studios, and published by Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, Hogwarts Legacy is described as an “immersive, open-world action RPG set in the world first introduced in the Harry Potter books.” A major part of Hogwarts Legacy will be the Room of Requirement, and more details about the space were shown in a recent livestream by Avalanche. Let’s take a look at what we can expect to find in the Room of Requirement when the game releases on February 10, 2023!
Room of Requirement
The Room of Requirement becomes a valuable and important gathering location for our heroes in the latter half of the original Harry Potter series. Many fans will remember that the Room of Requirement was a secret known only to a few in the castle, for the room would not appear unless a person nearby was in great need of it. And depending on that specific need, it would transform itself into whatever would fulfill that pressing wish.
From what we’ve seen in gameplay and trailers, it appears that the player character will discover the Room of Requirement at some point with the help of a House Elf named Deek. True to form, the room will magically perceive the need our student has for catching up on their studies – as well as the possible need for a secret hideaway as they sink deeper into the plot of the game – and provides them with a space to improve their magical skills.
Room of Requirement as a Housing System
Based on what was shown in the most recent livestream by Avalanche, there is an incredible amount of personalization which can take place in this space. Players will be able to place both ‘utility’ items, such as planters for growing magical ingredients, as well as decorative items to make the space their own.
You can even change the look of the architecture! There will be certain available themes like ‘Scientific’ or ‘Botanical’ which will change the look of different areas of the room.
The developers have done a really great job of integrating this system into the world of the game, too! Instead of a basic, boring UI system where the player selects the item they want and place it in the spot they wish, Hogwarts Legacy take full advantage of the fact that this is a world full of magic. All housing items are conjured by the player character, they are lifted and hovered by magic as you make a choice of where to place the items, and you can use magic to change the size of the item as well.
You can see the Conjuration UI here, where the available rugs also follow similar themes as the architecture. Also note that conjuration appears to require resources (in this particular case Moonstones) in order to manifest an item. It’s likely that different items will require different amounts of moonstones in order to be able to create the item you desire.
You can purchase conjuration ‘recipes’ from the Tomes and Scrolls shop in Hogsmeade.
Virmarium
A vivarium can also be discovered and used to nurture and raise your own menagerie of magical creatures. In fact, this new doorway appears to lead to an even larger outdoor space which you can customize with additional structures to reflect your character’s personality.
This space is where you can bring rescued magical creatures. They will be safe here, and as you care for and bond with them, they will grant your character the privilege of harvesting small amounts of magical ingredients from their fur, feathers, etc.
Conclusion
The Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement looks to be a really in depth space, with a TON of available customization! And not just inside the immediate ‘room’ itself, but also in additional rooms which can be ‘grown’ and added to expand the space. The virmarium is a perfect example of this, with a entire outside space available for the player to care for magical creatures large and small.
