Hogwarts Legacy Gameplay: Traits

Developed by Avalanche Studios, and published by Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, Hogwarts Legacy is described as an “immersive, open-world action RPG set in the world first introduced in the Harry Potter books.” A major part of Hogwarts Legacy will be the Gear and Traits you can collect, and more details about upgrading your gear was shown in a recent livestream by Avalanche. Let’s take a look at what we can expect when the game releases on February 10, 2023!

Hogwarts Legacy: Traits

The Enchanted Loom is a crafting station in the Room of Requirement which players will use to apply traits to or upgrade individual pieces of gear.

Like items, clothes in the wizarding world can have differing magical properties. Players may want to craft different pieces with different traits depending on what activity they plan on doing next. For example, a player attending a possible dueling tournament or other combat related activity will likely want to optimize their gear with defensive or offensive traits based on the type of enemy they expect to encounter. While a visit to the Forbidden Forrest might call for something more specific, such as protection against or the soothing of magical creatures.

Hogwarts Legacy Loom with Traits List

As you can see in the image above, when the developers interacted with the loom to apply a trait to a piece of gear there appeared to be a list of 25 total various traits. Whether this is a full list or not could not be determined, but the handful which were shown on screen provide insight into the potential variety of traits that the game will offer.

We can also see in the screenshot that applying each trait will require the use of some kind of material or ingredient in order to be successful. This will likely strongly encourage players to acquire and care for various magical beasts in order to have a steady supply of fur, feathers, or other materials to apply traits and upgrade their gear.

The gear list above is pretty straight forward, with the basic level green traits shown as:

  • Protego Shielding I
    • Decreased damage taken from Dark wizards
  • Amphibial Protection I
    • Decreased damage taken from Dugbogs
  • Goblin-Silver Resistence I
    • Decreased damage taken from goblins
  • Necromantic Protrection I
    • Decreased damage taken from Inferi
  • Anti-Venom I
    • Decreased damage taken from spiders
  • Cushioning I
    • Decreased damage taken from trolls
  • Lupus Protection I
    • Can’t be seen, but likely: Decreased damage taken from werewolves

The green symbols or icons listed just to the left of each of the traits listed seems to be based off of the usual ranking system games use for their gear and other items. Green typically stands for common, Blue for uncommon, Purple for rare, and Gold for legendary. The developers did not scroll down the list to let us see more traits, but it’s likely that there will be traits such as a blue Protego Shielding II, and so on, which are more powerful and also require more and rare materials to craft.
