Fame and Infamy are contrasting attributes of the player in Oblivion Remastered that can open new doors in some cases and close them in others. It is generally understood that performing positive deeds awards Fame, while immoral acts add Infamy. However, the Fame-Infamy mechanic in the game is far more nuanced than a simple moral point system.

What Are Fame and Infamy in Oblivion Remastered?

Fame and Infamy are attributes in Oblivion Remastered that also act as progression mechanics in certain cases. Gaining Fame has little to no downsides, and the attribute represents how well-known your character is for their positive deeds. Completing most main missions and closing Oblivion Gates adds to your Fame. Infamy, on the other hand, represents your character’s reputation for criminal and antisocial behavior. Activities like getting caught attacking friendly NPCs or stealing will add to Infamy.

It is important to note that while Fame and Infamy are opposites in principle, they do not cancel each other out in the game. As a result, you can have 40 Fame and 50 Infamy at the same time. However, whichever of the two is higher will affect certain mechanics. For example, you will not be able to pray at altars to the Nine Divines if your Infamy is higher than your Fame.

To check both values for your character, open the Details tab in the Character section of the menu. The Renown attribute is the sum of your Fame and Infamy. Having high Renown is required to use the Greater Power of Heaven Stones.

Fame in Oblivion Remastered

Fame is an important attribute to increase, as it unlocks certain quests, raises NPCs’ disposition toward you, and even allows you to buy posh houses. The following are key features of Fame:

  • Unlike Infamy, Fame cannot be reduced and is permanent once gained.
  • An NPC’s disposition increases by 3 points for every 10 points of Fame you have.
    • The disposition increase from Fame is capped at +20 points and cannot go beyond it. This limit is reached at 67 Fame.
  • Some quests and activities require a minimum amount of Fame.
    • For example, the Order of the Virtuous Blood quest requires 5 Fame to initiate, and Lifting the Vale requires 10 Fame.
  • Purchasing expensive houses like Arborwatch in Chorrol and Rosethorn Hall in Skingrad requires 12 and 15 Fame, respectively.

How To Gain Fame

  • Close Oblivion Gates to receive +1 Fame for most gates.
  • Complete main missions and morally righteous side missions.

Infamy in Oblivion Remastered

Having high Infamy introduces several disadvantages and very few benefits. Responsibility is a hidden NPC trait that determines how they respond to characters with Infamy. Characters with high Responsibility, such as guards and Imperial officials, will have a lower disposition toward you because of Infamy. On the other hand, characters with low Responsibility, such as thieves and assassins, will have a higher disposition toward you.

Just like Fame, the disposition increases or decreases due to Infamy is capped at 20 points. Here are some notable features of Infamy:

  • If a character’s Infamy is higher than their Fame, they cannot pray at altars to the Nine Divines to receive healing.
  • Completing the Pilgrimage of the Nine Divines quest will reset Infamy to 0.
  • The Shrine of Sithis provides healing and bonuses to characters whose Infamy exceeds their Fame.
  • You cannot wear Crusader’s Relics if Infamy is greater than 1.

How To Earn Infamy in Oblivion Remastered

  • Most Thieves Guild quests add +2 Infamy
  • The majority of Dark Brotherhood quests award +1 Infamy.
  • Donning the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal will add +100 to Infamy and a 500 gold bounty.
  • Your character will be unaffected by any Fame or Infamy gained while wearing the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal, as the deeds will be attributed to the Gray Fox.
  • Getting caught while stealing or committing murder will add Infamy.
    • If no one catches you committing a crime, it will not increase Infamy.
