The Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate 3 lets you alter your ability stats permanently by +2 if used correctly. In return, you must bear a small penalty. While you may encounter the mirror in Act 2 in the Gauntlet of Shar, you can only use it in the House of Grief in Act 3. The ability boosts offer a great advantage in the final act of the game where the stakes keep rising.

In this guide, we shall go over how to find the mirror and how you can use it.

How to Find the Mirror Of Loss

You will come across the Mirror of Loss in the Gauntlet of Shar in the Shadow-Cursed lands and in the House of Grief in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate. The Mirror of Loss in the Gauntlet of Shar is cracked and cannot be used. The one in the House of Grief, however, is functional and can be used to boost abilities.

To find the functional Mirror of Loss, head to the Lower City in Act 3. The House of Grief lies in the northwest corner of the map. Progress through the House, and the Mirror of Loss lies at the very end of the level.

How to Use the Mirror of Loss

Interact with the Mirror of Loss. You will have to go through a certain dialogue chain to get the desired effect. You will also be required to pass a few skill checks when interacting with the mirror. For this, we recommend using a character with high Intelligence or using the Enhance Ability to increase the character’s Intelligence. You can pass the skill checks with any member and then bring forth the character that you wish to boost.

When you interact with the mirror, you will have four options. Select the [ARCANA] option and “study the mirror”. Pass the Arcana check to reach the next stage. We recommend quick saving and loading if you fail.

Now, offer a prayer to the mirror and pass the corresponding [RELIGION] check. After this, select “Gaze into the mirror, intent on offering it one of your memories”. This will trigger a cutscene. You can then offer up any of your memories as a sacrifice. Each memory corresponds to an ability.

The Mirror gives you a temporary -2 penalty on the ability you offer up in exchange for a permanent +2 on the ability of your choice. Use Remove Curse to get rid of the penalty.

Mirror of Loss memories

Below are all the mirror of the loss memories and their corresponding outcomes:

  • (Forbidden Knowledge) Part with the Forbidden Knowledge from the Thayan Tomb. (Lose the Forbidden Knowledge buff and access to the Danse Macabre spell).
  • Offer up memories of your strength – times when you triumphed, thanks to your raw power (-2 Strength).
  • Give up memories of your youth, when your heart was carefree and your limbs were nimble (-2 Dexterity).
  • Relinquish memories of fortitude and well-being, when body and mind held fast against all challenges (-2 Constitution).
  • Surrender valued knowledge gleaned from books, scrolls, and tablets… words that left a mark on your mind, but no more (-2 Intelligence).
  • Let go of some wisdoms that time has bestowed upon you – old wounds, tough lessons, and fond memories alike (-2 Wisdom).
  • Give away memories of when your charm stood to you – the applause of the swayed, the smiles of the beguiled, the kisses of the seduced (-2 Charisma).
  • (Deception) You will not surrender any part of yourself. Invent a false offering to trick the mirror. (No negative, but won’t give the bonuses below even on a success).
