Mutilated Carapace

In Baldur’s Gate 3 the Mutilated Carapace is unique rare clothing piece that you can only receive by defeating Orin in Act 3. It’s bonuses appear to primarily benefit those characters and builds who are of a more sneaky persuasion. Formless Slaughter will grant the wearer a +1 to Attack and Damage rolls while you are shapeshifted or disguised. Unfortunately for Druids, this boost does not appear to apply to Wild Shape. Rather, it is when spells such as Disguise Self are in play. Disguise Self is a Level 1 Illusion spell which allows spellcasters to temporarily change their appearance. Seeming, a Level 5 Illusion spell has the same effect, but grants the disguise to your entire party.

The second perk on Mutilated Carapace is called Faceless Masquerade. This grants the wearer Advantage on Deception and Persuasion Checks. So not something that would necessarily benefit you in a fight, but could come in handy for role-playing purposes. You also get a minor benefit of +1 to your Armour Class.

Mutilated Carapace features in BG3:

  • Armor Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 3.6 lb
  • Price: 800 gp
  • Where to Find: Looted from Orin, Act 3.
  • Bonuses:
    • Formless Slaughter: You gain a +1 to Attack and Damage rolls while shapeshifting or disguised.
    • Faceless Masquerade: You have Advantage on Deception Checks and Persuasion Checks.
    • Armour Class +1
  • All classes can use this clothing equipment

Note: The following contains major spoilers for Act 3.

How to Get Mutilated Carapace in Baldur’s Gate 3

To get Mutilated Carapace in Baldur’s Gate 3 you need to proceed through the game until Act 3, where you can fight and defeat Orin in order to loot this unique piece of clothing from her. After your party arrives in the city of Baldur’s Gate during Act 3 you will be contacted by both Gortash and Orin, each using their own methods of persuasion or coercion to get you to kill the other. The order you choose to do this is up to you. For the purposes of this armour guide, it does not matter if you go after Orin first or second. Defeating her at the end of either path will get you the Mutilated Carapace.

BG3 Rivington Map two roads to find Orin

What does change, depending on who you wish to deal with first, is the starting point for finding Orin. If you choose to face and defeat Gortash first, then afterwards Orin will send a note to your camp. Congratulating you on Gortash’s murder, she’ll say you now must face the Murder Tribunal.

However, if you decide to go after Orin first then you’ll need to complete the quest called Investigate the Murders. You can pick up the start of this quest by visiting the Open Hand Temple in Rivington to help solve the murder there. At the end of Investigate the Murders, you will end up at the same point, where you must find and face the Murder Tribunal in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The Murder Tribunal

To find the Murder Tribunal you will need to use the location and password. This will lead you to Candulhallow’s Tombstones armed with the password ‘Sicarius’. Candulhallow’s Tombstones is located to the northeast of Elfsong Tavern, and the front door can be lockpicked if needed.

Head towards the back office room in order to find the secret entrance. You’ll see a ‘Butterfly on Skull’ painting hanging on the wall. Remove it to find a button underneath. Pressing it will reveal a secret door where you can use the password. Ignore the sign beyond this door and keep to the brick path on the right, which will reveal the door to the Murder Tribunal.

The Murder Tribunal is it’s own self-contained area. After arriving in the antechamber you’ll be stopped by guards who ask for proof of your right to be here. Essentially, they want to see proof that you have killed. Present them with a dismembered hand you should have picked up along the way. If you can’t, they will become hostile and you’ll have to fight.

Then head on inside to the Murder Tribunal audience hall. Fans of previous entries in the Baldur’s Gate series will meet a familiar face. You’ll have to make some critical story and character decisions here. Certain choices may instigate combat with members of the Tribunal. Either way, at the end you should receive a Map to Bhaal Temple and an Amulet of Bhaal. These will finally lead you to Orin and Mutilated Carapace in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Temple of Bhaal

You can find the entrance to the Temple of Bhaal in the Undercity Ruins. If you’ve been down into the sewers before, then there will be a waypoint located conveniently nearby. Moving away from the waypoint some and looking up above you should see some corpses strung up from the ceiling. Using a ranged weapon, shoot at them, causing blood to fall and a secret doorway to open.

As you walk down the stone path into the vast open space you’ll be ambushed by assassins across the gap to the right. They can be tricky to fight because they shroud themselves and cast Sanctuary. Call Lightning and other area of effect spells like Ice Storm and Fireball are great for attacking invisible enemies at a distance. As you work your way down to the stone bridge more assassins will attack from the left. Take care of them before trying to cross the bridge because other assassins will use arrows to attempt to push you and your party off the bridge into the chasm.

Your main goal here is defeating the Farslayer Of Bhaal, Gislev. He’ll be way up high after you get across the bridge and will have the Unstoppable condition. This reduces the damage he takes to 1 until you’ve removed the condition. You simply do that by hitting him.

Once Gislev and the assassins are all defeated, head through the open doorway to the north. Turn to find a metal door to your right. Use the Amulet to open the door and then make your way down the winding stone path to finally find the Temple of Bhaal in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Win the Fight Against Orin

At the end of the stone path, you should find the Temple of Bhaal waypoint. This is a good place to save. Once you start moving towards and into the Temple, you won’t be able to fast travel anymore. The Temple is straight ahead. Once inside, head down the stairs towards the center. You should be able to see Orin, likely standing over an alter with the prone body of a kidnapped party member.

You’ll enter into a dialogue with her as you approach and there will be a 25DC for an Intimidation, Persuasion or Deception response. If successful, Orin will ignore her intended victim and focus on you. This will trigger her fight. If you are playing a Dark Urge character you’ll be able to face her alone in a duel. When playing any other character it will be Orin and her assassins against you and your party.

Orin Fight Strategy

Orin also has the Unstoppable condition and it is even more of a pain here because with each turn, she gets blessed by Bhaal and the condition resets itself. So you have to get more than 7 hits in on her in order to start doing damage every turn. If you’re fighting with your group use all the actions and bonus actions which strike another target that you can. Magic Missile can be very helpful here. If your spellcaster can go first, even a low level cast of this spell can remove several of her Unstoppable layers.

For your melee characters Potions of Speed are invaluable in this fight! Really, you should have everybody drink one, and/or have your Wizard or Sorcerer cast Haste before battle. Maximize the number of hits everyone can make and focus Orin down first. Once she’s gone, the rest of her assassins are annoying (use those area of effect spells to hit them through their invisibility again) but not that hard.

When the fight is over look for the ‘Gore Pile’ that is Orin’s remains. Loot her for the key to releasing your kidnapped companion, Crimson Mischief and the Mutilated Carapace!
