In Monster Hunter Wilds, Nata is a Keeper who is at the heart of the game’s main story. He is the reason the Guild authorized an expedition into the Forbidden Lands (after thinking there was no life there for a long time). While some sections of the player base find him to be naggy or annoying, the developers have done a good job at fleshing out his storyline. It is quite interesting to see the world of Monster Hunter through the eyes of an empathic child who is learning about the outside world for the first time after losing everything he knew.

“”I was still hoping that I imagined the whole thing…” A mysterious young boy that accompanies you on your journey.”

What Is Nata’s Role in Monster Hunter Wilds Story?

Monster Hunter Wilds begins with a cutscene where we see Nata’s village being attacked by Arkveld. His escape is facilitated by Tasheen. The Guild (namely Fabius and others) find Nata in the desert and this kicks off the story and the Forbidden Lands expedition.

While it’s clear that Capcom is pondering on the questions of who is a hunter and what role they plays in the ecosystem through the Monster Hunter Wilds’ story, nowhere is it better shown than through Nata. We must keep it in mind that he is a child who survived a terrible tragedy and is seeing everything for the first time.

He is struggling to understand how hunters fit into everything, his own role (once he learns the truth about the Keepers, Guardians, and Arkveld), and how monsters survive in the ecosystem. During the course of the main story, you will be able to interact with Nata from time to time to ask how he’s doing or what he’s feeling.

Although Nata’s identification with Arkveld is faulty, it doesn’t outright make it illogical. He is as eager to know what Arkveld’s future holds as his own. As a child who has gone through everything he has, he sees Arkveld as merely trying to live even though the Guardian is rampantly killing without a reason. Nata is visibly distraught when the Hunter is authorized to defeat Guardian Arkveld.

But his growth is seen at the very end of the Low Rank storyline as we prepare to deal with the problem of Zo Shia. He is aware that the awakening of Zo Shia will wreak havoc and that as a Keeper he has to put a stop to it. During the journey to the Dragontorch, Nata recounts his experiences ever since the Forbidden Lands expedition began and we see him showing a deeper understanding of the world. And when the Hunter decides to instead defeat Zo Shia, Nata is aware that that’s what hunters do – the necessary.

Nata chooses to become an intermediary between the various villages and the Guild. Gameplay-wise, players will be able to trade items with NPCs and gather materials retrieved in Suja through Nata.

In the final mission of the High Rank story, Nata wants to come with the Hunter as the latter prepares to take down FW Arkveld. Nata acknowledges his role as an apprentice hunter but insists that as a Keeper he wishes to watch over Arkveld (that has found its way to life) and the Hunter. The player character initially says no because they don’t need someone to watch over them but rather asks Nata to do more as he is capable of that.

When FW Arkveld finally shows up, the same hesitance is no longer there in Nata. He asks the Hunter:

“Please…stop it. For its own sake.”

Post the hunt, Nata says there are others like Arkveld who “found a way to return to what they truly were” and that he was sure that they would one day find their place to become a part of the world again.
