Nightingale is a brand new shared world survival game with a focus on complex crafting systems and base-building. Additionally, the game looks to set itself a part in a crowded genre with a unique card system which can open portals to new realms with procedurally generated worlds. With a cool steampunk aesthetic and an alternate history setting, the excitement for this game has been building. In this preview article we’ll be taking a look at Nightingale’s release date, available platforms, story and setting, gameplay, trailers and more.

Nightingale: Release Date

Developed and published by Inflexion Games, Nightingale will have a Early Access release date of February 20, 2024. This date has been bumped up slightly from the original announcement of February 22. The developers have done this in anticipation of player excitement, and also to give them extra time to address any major issues that crop up before the busy first release weekend.

Currently we don’t have any information on exactly what time the game will become available for purchase and download. As an Early Access game, there will likely not be any pre-ordering or pre-loading of the game available.

Currently, Nightingale will be available on PC only, via Steam or the Epic Games Store. For now, the developers have confirmed that Nightingale will not be available on either the Playstation 5 or the Xbox Series X/S. Consequently, this also means that it will be not be available to console players via Playstation Plus or Xbox Gameplass subscriptions.

It’s probably too early to speculate on whether the game will eventually come to consoles. Early Access on PC typically means that a game will be in development for at least another year, if not longer. Depending on the success of the game on PC, it’s likely that Inflexion Games will tell us more about a possible console launch closer to the official full PC release.

Nightingale: Story and Setting

Nightingale: Story Realm Portal promo image

The setting found in Nightingale is an alternate reality of our own, one in which the Fae revealed themselves to humanity during the 1500s. They shared their knowledge of magic with us, and thus altered the path of history dramatically. With the help of the Fae the magical city of Nightingale was founded. It serves as a kind of nexus for created portals that can transport people to other realms.

The game of Nightingale begins in the Victorian Era of the mid to late 1800s. A mysterious phenomenon called The Pale, which puts everything that it touches into a state of suspended animation, has covered the entire world. Moreover, it has scattered human survivors across the realms. The city of Nightingale still stands, but the gateway portals that would typically provide quick access to refuge are no longer working properly. In fact, the whole portal system is malfunctioning, making gateway travel incredibly unpredictable and perilous.

You will enter the game of Nightingale as a Realmwalker, discovering portals, collecting resources, fighting for survival and working to create a stronghold against this chaos. The suggested overarching goal of the game is to find a way back to the city of Nightingale. However, the game is also very open to player-created goals and forging your own path.

Nightingale: Gameplay

The highlight of Nightingale is the portal gateway system, which will be a unique mechanic that allows Realmwalkers to visit other biomes. Completing a ‘site of power’ within the game can unlock a realm card recipe. Once you’ve created this card, you can then use it to travel to another realm. Additionally, you can combine different cards to create different effects within these new worlds. Moreover, each new realm that you create with the cards will be entirely procedurally generated. This means that each new realm map which will be exclusive to you and your game.

Additionally, Nightingale is described by developer Inflexion Games as a shared world survival crafting game. And from what we’ve seen so far of the crafting system in previews it looks to be complex and robust. If you’re familiar with crafting systems in other survival games, you’ll understand the fundamentals here. Harvest materials from the world, collect blueprints/recipes, and build crafting stations in order to upgrade your gear, build your base, and advance. Furthermore, each world you visit will have shops, and the kinds of items they carry (including crafting recipes) will vary depending on the type of biome.

Finally, as in any good survival game there will be plenty of combat encounters to challenge players of every level. The more difficult Apex Creature Hunts and Vaults are meant to be attempted with a group. However, they certainly could also serve as the ultimate challenge for skilled solo players.
