Rune is important in Throne and Liberty to increase and customize your character’s gear. Runes boost your character’s defensive and offensive stats. Earn Rune that you achieve in the game provides specific small buffs to your stats. However, your character’s stats grow as you level up your runes (Level 60). Different types of runes serve a unique purpose in Throne and Liberty, and our guide will walk you through the various components.
Before you look to upgrade the Runes, you must know the basic concept of Rune Sockets, Runes Synergies, and how to get runes fast in the game. Unlocking a Rune Socket requires a Rune Hammer. You can obtain the Rune Hammers in the game differently, or the Rune Hammer can also be crafted using the Rune Fragments.
What are Runes in Throne and Liberty
Runes in Throne and Liberty is an endgame gearing progression system. For endgame gear, Runes is an advancement upgrade. Not all items in the game can be equipped with Runes and other items can have up to three Runes applied to give extra bonuses. Each Rune that drops will be of some higher level than your previous runes available in inventory. Rarity, Rune level, and synergies all enhance your combat power. Runes will provide a ton of free stats to your character in the game.
The players will receive a slight stat boost with the runes of low level in your inventory. However, the buff will become more powerful as you progress with the Rune system. Runes will enhance your item’s properties and become powerful in PVP and PVE gameplay in Throne and Liberty. The Runes system is pretty deep and quite difficult to get and gives a lot of character power. Insert runes into Epic gear (Weapons and Accessories) to get Rune Synergies. Throne and Liberty Rune Types
Runes lets you upgrade compatible items like bracers, belts, rings, necklaces, and weapons and gives stat bonuses based on the following three types that you slot into your gear.
- Attack (Red): Enhancing your damage potential by boosting stats such as Critical Hit, Hit, and Heavy attack chance.
- Defense (Blue): Enhance your defensive stats such as Endurance, Evasion, and HP.
- Support (Yellow): Gives buffs such as damage resistance or healing bonuses.
Each Rune has stats that you can level up or upgrade in the game. All three types of runes can be classified into three tiers, green, blue, and gray.
How Runes Work in Throne and Liberty
In Throne and Liberty, runes are Growth items that you can slot into your accessories and weapons. Weapons and Accessories of Epic (Purple) type give Rune sockets, where you can insert the Runes, you achieve in the game. Unlock the Rune Sockets before placing the runes. You can unlock the socket with the help of a special item “Rune Hammer”.
You get an Attack, Defense, or Support type of Rune Socket after opening a socket. Use more Rune Hammers to reroll the type of a Rune Socket. Upon placing eligible gear pieces into the runes management tool, three sockets with hammer icons will appear under it.
Weapons and accessories have Rune Slots and each uses Rune Hammers to open Sockets. Reroll sockets until you get them for the Synergy of your liking. Farm challenge dungeons to level watermark up and dissolve runes you don’t need. Craft more Rune hammers reroll, open more sockets, and keep runes you want to use. Get those runes you want to blue, equip them for the synergy, and unequip when you want to farm them. Eventually, after long, slow, and hard grind all your gear pieces will have blue runes with perfect synergy.
How to get Runes in Throne and Liberty
To unlock the socket, you need a Rune hammer which can be crafted at any crafting for 100 Rune fragments. Purchase weekly at contract coin Merchant, obtain the battle pass, purchase on the auction house for Lucent, or obtain through RNG when doing material Rune conversion. Rune fragments are obtained by dissolving runes but it is also RNG how many you get.
Runes can be obtained from different events, world bosses, and open-world dungeon farming, but the easiest, fastest, and most consistent way is by farming challenge dungeons. Each week two dungeons are in the rotation and each dungeon has 30 different tiers of difficulty. There’s no entry limit and you can farm them infinitely. Each tier also increases gear score requirements and rewards.
The good part is that you don’t need to clear every single tier to unlock the next tier. For example, if the party leader has cleared tier five then you can instantly go into tier five boss without clearing low tiers. Defeating a boss awards you with one RNG runes chest for a specific gear piece.
Achieve runes as a reward by fulfilling the challenges of Tier 2 Dungeons. The difficult version of Tier 2 Level 50 Dungeons is offered by the Challenge Dimensional Circle. Accomplish the original Tier 2 Level 50 Dungeon before you jump into these harder versions. For completing Dynamic Events in Throne and Liberty, you’ll receive Runes as a reward. You’ll get a Rune Chance Bundle that owns a variety of Runes by completing a Dynamic Event in the game. Utilize your Substance Transformation System to modify the runes into stronger ones.
How to upgrade Runes
The runes are connected, which means that to level up a specific Rune you need to get that exact same rune, with the same stat to have a chance it leveling it up. Leveling the runes is similar to the new world’s watermark system. If you get a duplicate of a rune that you already have then it goes up in levels.
Leveling it up isn’t always 100% guaranteed. For example, if you have a gray level two weapon defense rune with heavy magic attack evasion then to level it up you need another weapon defense rune with heavy magic attack evasion, regardless of the color.
Each time the same rune drops, it has a chance to go up by one level or if it fails then it stays the same level. Gray runes can be leveled up to 20, green runes to 40, and blue runes to level 60. It’s all done automatically with RNG as soon rune lands in your inventory. Watermark is a hidden system in the rune that is available in your inventory. For example, if you dissolve a blue level three support rune then the next time when you drop any gray, green, or blue rune with those exact stats then that rune can turn to a level 4 blue rune.
Rune level is saved on your character and it doesn’t reset when dissolving, so don’t need to stack runes in your inventory. You can hold those runes that you want to use and dissolve something else. Each time you obtain a rune, it has an opportunity of being 1 level higher than your last best Rune of the same type. Obtaining as many runes in the game is the best way to upgrade your Runes.
Tips for Rune Farming
Start by farming tier five boss until most of the gray runes have built up watermark level 20. After that move to tier 10 and until most of the runes become green until around level 25 or 30. After that, you can move to tiers 11 to 15 which drops blue runes and can turn any level 25 green rune into a level 26 blue rune. Even if leveling up fails, if you drop a blue rune that level 25 green rune will turn into a level 25 blue rune.
How to Unlock Rune sockets
There are three locked Rune Sockets of each Equipment item that can be equipped with Runes. Open the inventory to open the list of items that you own. Selecting the rune management will pop up the rune management menu and you can see the locked rune sockets. Rune Hammer is necessary to unlock the Rune Sockets in the game. However, you can achieve the rune hammer by the following methods.
- Buy the Rune Hammer from the Auction House.
- Purchase the Rune Hammer from the Contract Coin Merchant.
- From Battle Pass Rewards.
- Get a rune fragment by dissolving unwanted runes in the inventory. Craft the Rune Hammer at a Senior Crafting vendor in Stonegard Castle utilizing 100 Rune Fragments.
- Obtain the hammers from the weekly rewards.
Unlock the Rune Socket by using Rune Hammer and then put a Rune from your inventory into the Rune Socket. You can use Rune Hammer to unlock a socket and reroll the unlocked socket.
Rune Synergies
Farming levels are important as dissolving higher-level runes gives more rune fragments needed to craft Rune hammers. It is a slow and very grinding process but with the watermark system, you don’t have to worry about dissolving useless runes. You need to dissolve them to craft rune hammers that are necessary to reroll sockets, which are very important for the Rune synergies.
Rune Synergy for each gear piece is visible in the rune management. It offers different stats for each gear piece and it varies depending upon the color of the equipped runes. Start by using a rune hammer to unlock three sockets. Each socket has a random chance to unlock an attack, defense, or support socket.
To get the synergy you want, the sockets need to be in order to show next to the synergy. For example, if you want three dexterity and 3% attack speed synergy then your socket needs to be attack, support, and defense in that exact order. If the sockets are not in this order, then you can use the Rune hammer to reroll them until you get the desired outcome.
To get additional bonuses, arrange the equipped Runes in a specific order. Keep in mind that the strength of the bonuses depends on the rarity of the runes.
Types of Rune Synergies
Synergies that are available in the game are:

After acquiring the desired synergy, you need to put each rune that matches the rune type into the item and you’ll get access to the synergy. You need a lot of hammers which means the knowledge of how to find high-level runes, dissolving them for Rune fragments, and then crafting endless amounts of Rune hammers is the most efficient way to get top-tier runes and synergies.
Alternative Ways to Obtain Runes in Throne and Liberty
Throne and Liberty offer some alternate ways to obtain runes. Runes Bundles, Rune Chests, and runes are gained by the following.
- End open-world events to gain Rune Bundles.
- Move to the weekly Reward tab to collect rewards of 55 Rune Chance chest.
- Kill the guild boss in the game to get Rune drops.
Completing the dungeons in Throne and Liberty offers you rune drops. When leveling up a Rune, the rarity of the rune does not matter. Farm lower-tier Challenge Dungeons to get multiple grey runes. Collect the Rune chance chest from the weekly rewards that the game offers and defeating the guild boss will help you acquire the bundle of runes.
