In Baldur’s Gate 3, players are often faced with various moral decisions that shape the course of their adventure, and one of those decisions revolves around the fate of a pixie in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. As you seek a safe passed through the shadows, you’ll be faced with a difficult choice. Should you release the pixie, or should you leave it confined to the lantern? This seemingly simple choice holds deeper implications for your journey, morality, and even the fate of other characters. In this guide, we’ll explore the consequences, moral dilemmas, and possible rewards or risks of freeing the pixie in Baldur’s Gate 3, helping you decide if it’s worth the gamble.
Everything About Pixie Dolly Dolly Dolly and the Moonlantern in BG3
When you start Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3 your character will enter the Shadow-Cursed Lands, where the shadows will attack unwary travelers without a source of light. Furthermore, the deeper you go into the shadows, the stronger the curse becomes. Therefore, to find all of the secrets the shadows are hiding you will need to find an incredibly strong source of magical light.
The best source of magical light in the Shadow-Cursed Lands is a Moonlantern. This incredibly bright source of white light will protect both you and your party in even the deepest corners of the darkness. However, the source of that light is a trapped pixie named Dolly Dolly Dolly. After you claim the Moonlantern for yourself, she’ll ask you to release her. The dilemma for your character will be to do the morally good thing and release the pixie, but doing so will destroy the lantern.
However, despite her searing personality, Dolly is grateful to be freed and willing to offer you a reward that will replicate her light in a different form. Moreover, this reward can be considered better than the lantern, because a character does not have to equip it in place of a weapon.
How to Find Pixie Dolly Dolly Dolly’s Moonlantern in Baldur’s Gate 3

The best way to find the Moonlantern holding the pixie Dolly hostage is by entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands from the Mountain Pass. Near a cauldron full of torches you can use against these weaker early shadows, you’ll meet a goblin. They will assume you are the cultist they were sent to meet and will want to guide you down to the rest of the group. They are waiting for a guide, which you can only summon by playing a song a the Spider’s Lyre instrument.

There are four different ways to obtain the Spider Lyre:
- Loot it from Minthara after killing her at the Goblin Camp
- Side with Minthara against the Emerald Grove and receive the Lyre as a reward at the party
- Loot it from Nere after killing him at the Grymforge
- Side with Nere and convince him to help you get through the Shadow-Cursed Lands
Once the drider has been summoned you’ll start your journey with the cultist convoy. Along the way, a group of Harpers will attack the group. You can ‘change’ sides, and attack the cultists along with them. Kill Kar’niss and the cultists and you can loot the Moonlantern containing Dolly after the fight.
Should You Release Dolly Dolly Dolly from the Moonlantern BG3

Choosing the leave the pixie trapped will mean that you do not lose your source of protective light. You can keep using the Moonlantern while exploring the Shadow-Cursed Lands. However, there are two downsides to this choice:
- Dolly will curse you out and continue to make insulting comments along the way.
- You can only use the Moonlantern by equipping it to a party member to hold. This takes the place of their weapon, so they are less effective in a fight.
On the other hand, releasing the pixie will cause Dolly to be thankful for your help. She will reward you with the Filigreed Feywild Bell and give you the Pixie Blessing condition. The Pixie Blessing acts exactly like the light source Dolly produced in the Moonlantern.
Therefore, this means that you can still explore all of the Shadow-Cursed Lands without having to find another one. Moreover, the Bell can be carried in your regular inventory, which means that your hand will be free to carry a weapon again.

Here are all of the various consequences you can experience if you choose to release the pixie Dolly Dolly Dolly from the Moonlantern in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Release Dolly by opening the lantern: Receive the Filigreed Feywild Bell and the Pixie’s Blessing.
- Release Dolly by smashing the lantern: Dolly curses you with A Clown in Town condition, where you are inflicted with clown face paint.
- Release Dolly, then kill her: This is a Dark Urge-only option. Doing so will cause you to lose the Moonlantern and receive no rewards.
Stop the Presses Quest
Additionally, if you release Dolly gently and part on good terms, this can also have the consequence of helping you out in a small way on a side quest in Act 3. When you reach the Lower City, one of the locations you can visit is the Baldur’s Mouth where they print the local news. Speak to Ettvard Needle, the editor of the Baldur’s Mouth Gazette, and you’ll discover that he plans on printing negative articles about you.
The only way to halt the slander is by stopping the printing press. Sneak into the basement of Baldur’s Mouth and use Invisibility to get past the Steel Watch guards. After you get to the printing press, you discover that it’s inhabited by the pixie Jelliwig. If you released Dolly, then Jelliwig will know of it and immediately agree to help you.
Keeping the Gazette from printing negative articles about you in BG3 is important because it can affect the attitudes several city NPCs have towards you. Positive headlines can result in a boost of 10 attitude. Negative headlines result in a loss of 15 attitude. Attitude can greatly influence the prices that merchants will accept when you are trading.
