Suspend Gets Nerfed Hard

Bungie has announced that it will be nerfing the Strand Suspend ability in Destiny 2. The nerf will be significant, and it is sure to have a major impact on the way the Strand subclass is played.

The Strand Suspend ability allows players to temporarily disable an enemy’s abilities. This can be a very powerful ability, especially in end-game PvE. However, Bungie has decided that the ability is too powerful, and it is making the following changes:

  • Reduced base Suspend duration vs. non-Champion PvE combatants from 8 seconds to 5 seconds.
  • Thread of Continuity now extends this duration to 7 seconds, down from 12 seconds.
  • Reduced base Suspend duration vs. Champion combatants from 8 seconds to 3 seconds (4 seconds with Thread of Continuity).
  • Increased snap damage dealt to Suspended boss combatants by 67%.

These changes are sure to make Strand Suspend a less powerful ability. It will still be useful in some situations, but it will no longer be the dominant force in PvE that it once was. Even Bungie themselves describe the nerf to duration as significant.

Strand Fragments Nerfed

The nerf to Strand Suspend is to carve out a healthier role for Suspend in Destiny 2’s sandbox. It was simply too much of a one size fits all ability against almost every situation. They also nerfed several fragments that deal with Suspend and its effects:

  • Thread of Mind
    • Reduced class energy gain, based on the tier of the defeated target:
    • Minor combatants reduced from 15% to 10%.
    • Major combatants and players reduced from 25% to 15%.
    • Bosses, Champions, and minibosses reduced from 50% to 25%.
  • Thread of Generation
    • Reduced the overall energy gain per damage event against PvE enemies by about 20%.
    • Rebalanced the energy gain multiplier across primary weapon archetypes.
    • Overall, they reduced the efficiency of fully automatic primary weapons and increased the efficiency of precision primary weapons to compensate.

The nerf to Strand Suspend, while significant, will most likely not be looked on too negatively by the community. While some players may be sad their favorite ability in the sandbox isn’t as effective, I think most players understand that this is a healthy and necessary change.

Only time will tell how the nerf to Strand Suspend will impact the meta in Destiny 2. However, it is clear that this is a significant change, and it is sure to have a major impact on the way the Strand subclass is played.
