Everything about Wulbren Bongle in Baldur’s Gate 3
Wulbren Bongle is a Deep Gnome in Baldur’s Gate 3, and the leader of the Ironhand Gnomes in the City of Baldur’s Gate. You can first learn of Wulbren Bongle in Act 1 if you rescue his friend Barcus Wroot from the goblins in the Blighted Village. If saved from the goblins, Barcus will tell you about the search for his friend.
Wulbren and the Ironhand Gnomes were reportedly in the Underdark, using the Decrepit Village as a base of operations. However, it was raided by Druegar slavers sometime before the start of the game. Consequently, Wulbren has now gone missing, and Barcus has set out in search of his friends.
You cannot find Wulbren Bongle at any point during Act 1 of BG3. He will not appear until events in Act 2, down in Moonrise Towers Prison. If you save him there, then Wulbren can be found again in Angleiron’s Cellar during Act 3.

Where to Find Wulbren Bongle in Baldur’s Gate 3
To find Wulbren Bongle in Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3, you will first need to claim a Moonlantern so you can make your way safely through the Shadow Curse to Moonrise Towers. There are a few different ways to get a Moonlantern in BG3, but the most straightforward way is to travel with the Convoy you can find just after entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands from the Mountain Pass.
Once you’ve joined the convoy, you can betray them and take the Moonlantern Kar’niss was using. Additionally, you could also protect the convoy and then find a free Moonlantern on the second floor of Moonrise Towers.
After getting inside Moonrise Towers, you’ll need to go into a room on the southwest side of the main floor. There you will find a stairwell that will take down into the Moonrise Towers Prison. You can find Wulbren down here, in a cell along with a couple of other Deep Gnomes. Additionally, there will also be some Tiefling refugees in another cell. If you sided with the Grove and refugees in Act 1, it is highly recommended that you save both Wulbren and the refugees at the same time.
How to Rescue Wulbren Bongle in BG3
The best way to rescue Wulbren from Moonrise Towers Prison in BG3 is by going into the Warden’s office. Kill the Warden while she is alone, then stay put. Each prison guard will come through the office as they patrol and you can kill them individually without much risk. Additionally, while you’re in the Warden’s office, you can find Wulbren’s Hammer by climbing up the ladder.
Once all of the guards have been defeated, you can break out the prisoners without losing any of them in a fight. Head to the west side of the prison and jump up onto the ledge above. This will lead to a path that goes behind the cells. Equip Wulbren’s Hammer, or use any other weapon that causes Bludgeoning damage. Attack the walls behind the cells and the stone will crumble.
Follow the Gnomes and Tieflings back to the boat and encourage them to head to the safety of the Last Light Inn. You can find Wulbren at the Inn if you visit before finding the Nightsong, where you can get a gold reward from him. Furthermore, you can also speak to him in the Throne room after the climactic fight against Ketheric Throm. He’ll ask for your assistance in Baldur’s Gate, which will begin the quest Avenge the Ironhands.
All Wulbren Bongle Quests in Baldur’s Gate 3
Wulbren’s most significant quest in BG3 is ‘Rescue Wulbren’, where your goal will be to break him out of Moonrise Towers Prison. This quest will tie in with the Rescue the Tieflings quest because some of the refugees will be held in the same prison.
Avenge the Ironhands can be started by speaking to Wulbren in the throne room after the fight against Ketheric Thorm. Or, you can pick it up in Act 3 after finding Angleiron’s Cellar. However, the quest Deal with the Gnomes will involve the Flaming Fists asking you to take out the troublesome gnomes. If you do so, then Wulbren’s story will end.
Here is a list of all the quests Wulbren Bongle is related to in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Rescue Wulbren – Save him from Moonrise Towers Prison in Act 2.
- Rescue the Tieflings – You can also save the Tieflings from cells in Moonrise Towers Prison.
- Avenge the Ironhands – Wulbren asks you to destroy the Steel Watch Foundry and the Gondians inside.
- Deal with the Gnomes – The Flaming Fists ask you to find the Gnomes’ hideout and kill them all.
- Gather Your Allies – Potentially recruit either Wulbren or Barcus as an ally for the final fight.
Gather Your Allies is a larger quest that you pick up very early on, and it will span the entire game. You cannot gather all of the available allies in a single playthrough because some recruits exclude others. For example, if you recruit Wulbren Bongle, you will not be able to recruit Barcus Wroot. The reverse is also true – if you recruit Barcus Wroot, then you cannot ally with Wulbren Bongle.
However, in this case, both gnomes will provide the same bonus, which allows you to summon 2 Ironhand Grenadiers in the final battle. These allies can throw blinding bombs and shoot Smokepowder Arrows.
