Dragon’s Dogma 2 Trickster Gameplay Preview

In the Dragon’s Dogma franchise, traditional RPG classes are called Vocations. So far, the developers of Dragon’s Dogma 2 have confirmed ten available Vocations for the sequel. These are divided into three categories: Starting, Advanced, and Hybrid. In this gameplay preview guide, we’ll look at the Trickster vocation, its playstyle and abilities, its strengths and weaknesses, and it’s viability as a Pawn vocation.

In the Dragon’s Dogma series, the Trickster Vocation is one of four hybrid classes which will be available in the sequel. These include the Mystic Spearhead, Magick Archer, Trickster and Warfarer.

The Trickster is another brand new Hybrid vocation, which specializes in conjuring illusions through the smoke created by their unique weapon, the Censer. The illusions created by a Trickster can cause a group of enemies to attack each other or be used as a taunt to draw their attack. Moreover, the Trickster vocation does not do much direct damage. Rather, they use their abilities to either trick enemies into harming themselves/each other, or boosting their allies in combat.

Additionally, you can use the smoke to create a spectral clone which can draw the focus of attackers. This will pair well with another ability which allows you to create false areas of ground off of cliffs, or conjure walls you can see through but an enemy can’t.

Overall, this class appears to provide you with the tools to master the surrounding environment so that your party can attack from their strongest vantage point. Furthermore, as a Trickster, you will also have the ability to temporarily increase the power of your Pawns beyond their normal limits.

Although it likely will not have direct party healing abilities, the function of the Trickster in a group will be that of a support role. With strong party buffs and the ability to send enemies running over the edge of sheer cliffs, the Trickster vocation is something brand new to the world of traditional RPGs. A purely pacifist vocation when looked at from a certain point of view, they can actually cause great damage and should not be taken lightly.

Trickster Skills and Abilities

An Exclusive Gameplay preview video from IGN gives us a look at some of the abilities which will be available to players of the Trickster vocation. The more basic abilities center around the Trickster using their Censer to draw enemy aggro. Additionally, the Effigial Incense ability in particular allows you to create a spectral clone which you can use to draw enemy attack. What is really unique about this ability is that you can teleport the clone to you, if you need to change position at anytime.

The stronger weapon abilities of the Trickster give you even more ways of using the aggro you can draw. Sending enemies over the edge of cliffs is just one fun possibility. The Trickster looks complex, and as a support class will take time to master. But the vocation appears to be something truly new and should be a delightful challenge for players.

Here are the known skills and abilities for the Trickster in Dragon’s Dogma 2 that we’ve seen so far:

Core Skills
  • Effigial Incense – Conjure a smoke/spectral clone, which enemies will attack, rather than you. Clone has it’s own health bar and will disappear if ‘killed’.
  • Effigial Snuff – Dismiss your spectral clone.
  • Invoking Essence – Moves your spectral clone to your current position. You can hold down the button to drag the clone behind you, if you wish.
  • Enthralling Aroma – Ability description currently unavailable.

Weapon Skills

  • Aromatic Resurgence – Buffs your active party temporarily, causing all of them to do a lot more direct damage.
  • Dragon’s Delusion – Conjures the illusion of a dragon that frightens any enemy which sees it. Can even effect larger enemies such as Ogres. Has a longer cast time.
  • Illusive Divider – Conjures a smokey/false section of rocky wall, which enemies perceive to be real. You can see through this wall from the other side, enemies cannot.
  • Suffocating Shroud – Casts smoke from your Censer in a wide arc, drawing enemy aggro to you.
  • Tricky Terrace – Conjures a smokey/false section of a rocky ledge which enemies perceive to as real ground.
  • Visitant Aura – Send forth your aura as an astral projection using your Stamina. Can float over areas and scout the environment and enemy groups. However, you are vulnerable in this state if attacked.

Should You Choose the Trickster Vocation For Your Pawn?

Unfortunately, you cannot choose the Trickster vocation for your Pawn because the Hybrid classes are available to Arisen only. When starting the game, each player will get to create their own Arisen character. Additionally, at some point in the game you will also get to make a custom-designed Pawn.

Within the world of Dragon’s Dogma, Pawns are said to lack emotion and a true will. Their one purpose is to follow and aid the Arisen. You can only create one single Pawn with the vocation of your choosing. However, you will be able to recruit other Pawns from within the game if you want to bring along a full party.

Pawns can have any of the Starting vocations, and can eventually choose an Advanced vocation. However, they cannot use Hybrid Vocations. Those are only available to the Arisen character.
