With the new free ARK: Survival Ascended Expansion, The Center, we have many changes, including new dinos and creatures.
ARK: Survival Ascended is a remaster of the popular ARK Survival Evolved survival game by Studio Wildcard. Each new expansion, whether it was previously paid DLC or free addition by modders, now comes with new features, mechanics, and often more minor changes. Each map has new Dinos and creatures, and The Center is no exception. Also, the center has many biomes that have been recreated, most notably lava islands and a few new areas like tropical islands. The caves have also been refreshed with more aesthetically pleasing foliage, additional loot, and spawn maps.
In this guide, we’ll focus on new creatures added to Survival Ascended with the center map and the list of all creatures available.
New The Center Dinos and Creatures
Among all the Survival Ascended, the Center map dinos, three new creatures weren’t available in the old ARK:
- Pyromane
- Shastasaurus
Therefore, of those two, the most interesting is Pyromane. Firstly, it’s a fantastic creature similar to Wyverns from Scorched Eart. Secondly, it connects and uses a few good features from multiple well-known creatures, like Ferox, Shadowmaine, Fire Wyvern, or even Magmasaur.
Yet Shastasaurus, a gigantic aquatic creature that, after taming, can work like a submarine, is also an exciting addition to the Center’s creatures and dinosaurs.
Pyromane
Pyromane features and basic information:
- Tameable: Yes
- Rideable: Yes, also Shoulder-mount
- Breedable: Yes
- Diet: Carnivore
- Temperament: Aggressive
- Taming Method: Passive (special)
This fantastic creature remembers the Shadowmane. One of Pyromane’s unique ability to be ridable and stay on the player’s shoulders. That’s the second creature that can be in a small and big form. While in miniature form and sitting on your shoulder, the Pyromane gives fire and cold resistance with the Cuddled Fire buff. However, if you mount it, the buff is much more robust, and you can resist the hottest lava and fire.
Another interesting mechanic connected to this fire cat is that any meat in their inventory will eventually be cooked at a speed similar to a small campfire. Additionally, if placed with oil, you can get Cooked Meat Jerky and Prime Meat Jerky, which is handy for long trips, and you won’t need to stop often to replenish food.
This creature has two weaknesses: water and paywall. It’s cheap on Steam, but you must buy it, own Ark Survival Ascended, and download The Center map before taming it in your game.
Additionally, if Pyromane enters the water, it receives a debuff, the Doused. Consequently, the creature is unable to perform a unique fire leap attack, and his bites no longer burn the enemies. Also, all temperature resistance buffs that it would typically provide to the layer are no longer available.
How to Tame Pyromane?
Below is a simplified Pyromane taming process in ARK: Survival Ascended:
- Lure to Water: Kite the Pyromane to a body of water to give it the Doused debuff.
- Weaken It: Attack the Pyromane until its health is below 50%.
- Mount It: Once weakened, interact with the Pyromane to mount it.
- Tame It: Attack nearby creatures to apply a burning effect. Use Flame Absorb (Ctrl + Secondary) to absorb the flame and fill the taming meter.
Tips and Tools that can help:
- Tranq Darts/Arrows: Use these to safely lower the Pyromane’s health without killing it.
- Flayer: Flying creatures are the best to kite ground fast creatures to specific places or traps before taming. You can escape easily.
- Armor and Weapons: Equip strong armor and weapons to handle the Pyromane and surrounding creatures’ damage.
- Healing Items: Medical brews or other healing items to recover health during taming.
- Friends: Bring tribe members to help.
Shastasaurus
Shastasaurus features and basic information:
- Tameable: Yes
- Rideable: Yes
- Diet: Carnivore
- Temperament: Curious
- Taming Method: Passive (special)
As mentioned in the dossier, Shastasaurus can function as a gigantic submarine. Its special saddle, The Shastasaurus Submarine Saddle, a mechanic we haven’t seen before, requires a lot of hard-to-get materials. In the creature’s underbelly, a mobile base is mounted where you can build structures inside, like storage boxes or crafting tables. The saddle on base primitive quality requires 200 Cementing paste, 150 electronics, 250 silica pearls, 350 crystal, and 1500 metal ingots.
Also, aquatic creatures are usually harder to tame because of oxygen limitations, and with such an expensive saddle that you can unlock at level 100, Shastasaurus is a late-game tame. It’s not a TEK engram, however, it requires a TEK replicator to craft. Moreover, it’s a slow dino compared to other gigantic aquatic creatures, so its main benefits lie in the submarine attached to it.
You can shoot torpedoes while inside the submarine or use the periscope, both of which are handy tools, especially in PvP. The periscope has a fantastic range, allowing you to see creatures even at very far distances. Also, you can see the creature’s stats like health, torpor, food, and stamina. Fantastic for underwater taming.
Pulse ability can knock back attacking enemies. The sonar ability highlights, with a blue, glowing dot, every creature in the area.
How to tame Shastasaurus?
Below is a simplified Shastasaurus taming process in ARK: Survival Ascended:
- Lure to Surface: Ride a tamed Ichthyosaurus to bring the Shastasaurus to the surface. The creature should simply follow you.
- Remove Leeches: Dismount and use a sickle to remove the three leeches from the Shastasaurus. You’ll notice the timer, the task will be difficult, so may take a bit of practice.
- Feed Taming Food: Feed the Shastasaurus its taming food (fish meat or exceptional kibble)
- Repeat: Repeat the process until the Shastasaurus is tamed.
Tips and Tools that can help:
- Use a Pack of Ichthyosaurus: If you have more than one dolphin with you, the timer will run out much slower depending on how many of those tames you have with you, making the taming process much easier.
- Use Flayer to find it: Often, you can spot Shastasaurus from the surface; while searching for it, you can use, for example, pelagornis to find it. Pelagornis can also land and replenish stamina on the water.
- Equip Scuba Gear: Use scuba gear to breathe underwater and stay safe during the taming process.
- Carry Extra Sickles: Bring extra sickles in case one breaks while removing the leeches.
- Lazarus Chowder: A dish can expand your oxygen.
