10. Faithbreaker
Faithbreaker Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Weapon Type: Warhammer
- Where to Find: Pickpocketed or looted from Dror Ragzlin, Act 1.
- Relevant Perk: Absolute Power: A surge of Divine energy accompanies your swing. It deals an additional 1d6 Force damage and possibly pushes your target back 5 meters. Can be used once per Short Rest.
The Faithbreaker warhammer might not be the most powerful of weapons, but it’s a great early-game hammer that fits with the Oathbreaker Paladin class very well thematically. The name itself suggests that either the user has broken their faith, or that it will be used to break the faith of others.
Paladins that equip this weapon will be able to use the unique weapon action Absolute Power once per Short Rest. You Paladin will channel a surge of Divine energy through your swing. This will cause you to deal an additional 1-6 points of Force damage and also has a chance to push your target back 5 meters. This is a nice perk for Paladins, who are often the frontline tanks and can enable you to create a bit of space between your enemies and the rest of your more squishy party.
9. Holy Lance Helm
Holy Lance Helm Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Armour Type: Medium Armour
- Where to Find: Painted Chest on the upper roof of Rosymorn Monastery, to the east of the Eagle nest
- Relevant Perk: Smite the Graceless: Creatures who miss their Attack rolls against the wearer must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or take 1d4 Radiant damage.
The Holy Lance Helm is another more role-play-centric piece of gear that you can find later on in Act 1. There is a lot to find when you visit the Rosymorn Monastery, including Crèche Y’llek and The Blood of Lathander. You can also discover the Eagle nest up on top of the roof, and if you jump across the platforms to the east you’ll find a large Painted Chest with the Holy Lance Helm inside.
The Holy Lance Helm will grant you the Smite the Graceless perk. This is a passive feature that will allow your Paladin to retaliate against attackers with Radiant damage. As a Paladin, you are likely in the thick of things on the frontline. With this helm equipped, any failed attack roll against you will consequently give you a chance to deal an extra 1-4 points of Radiant damage.
A powerful combo is to combine Holy Lance Helm with Luminous Gloves to trigger Radiating Orb. This stacking debuff lowers attack rolls of enemies and pairs well with divine smith or this helm.
8. Helmet of Smiting
Helmet of Smiting Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Armour Type: Medium Armor
- Where to Find: Chest in Selunite Outpost (X:164 Y:-251), Underdark, Act 1
- Relevant Perk: Bolstering Smite: When you apply a condition with one of your Smite spells, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Charisma Modifier.
As the name may imply, the Helmet of Smiting was tailor-made for the Paladin class and it’s a piece you can get during Act 1 of the game. You’ll have to travel down into the Underdark and locate the Selunite Outpost in the far southeast, but this equipment is worth discovering.
There is a basic +1 bonus to Constitution Saving Throws, but what really makes this piece great for Paladins is the extra survivability it can grant you. The main perk, Bolstering Smite, will give you additional temporary hit points whenever you apply a condition with one of your Smite spells in battle.
A combo you can use with this helmet is bringing a Cleric or Paladin with the Aid spell. Aid increases your max health depending on the spell slot used. Max health stacks with temporary hit points, boosting your HP substantially even early in the game.
7. Gloves of Heroism
Gloves of Heroism Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Armour Type: Clothing
- Where to Find: Found in a chest in a hidden room in the cellar of the Toll House on The Risen Road, Act 1
- Relevant Perk: Warding Hands: When you use your Channel Oath spells, you gain Heroism.
The Gloves of Heroism are another good Paladin gear piece you can find in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3, and you find it at the Toll House along the Risen Road. In the basement beneath the Toll House, there will be a couple of stone chairs. Have one character sit in each to move the secret door, and then send a third party member inside to find the Gloves in a chest.
The Gloves of Heroism are probably the best Paladin piece of armor you can find in Act 1 because their main perk grants you Heroism anytime you use one of your Channel Oath spells. Heroism is normally a Level 1 Enchantment spell that allows the caster to instill courage in the target. Consequently, this will make your Paladin immune to the Frightened condition, and you will also gain 5 temporary hit points.
Channel Oath spells are powerful buffs or debuffs. It is a resource and especially useful for Vengeance Paladin, who can activate it via a bonus action. This can buff your radiant damage while allowing you to use your action for attacks.
6. Blackguard’s Gauntlets
Blackguard’s Gauntlets Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Armour Type: Medium Armour
- Where to Find: Taken from the Death Knight, That Which Watches, at the Murder Tribunal, Act 3
- Relevant Perk: Cast Inflict Wounds at Level 4.
The Blackguard’s Gauntlets will appear much later in the game, and you will get the chance to face their owner during the main story which will eventually lead you to the Murder Tribunal. Before you can enter the Tribunal and be judged, you must pass the Death Knights guarding the door. These guys are no joke to fight, but it’s better to face them alone in the antechamber. They all have good gear that drops, but what you want for your Paladin are the Blackguard’s Gauntlets dropped by That Which Watches.
Once equipped, these gauntlets will grant you a +1 to Attack and Strength Saving Throws. However, what you’re interested in is the Level 4 Inflict Wounds spell. The Oathbreaker Paladin subclass can access this as a Level 1 spell upon reaching Level 3. However, this armour piece will grant any class the ability to free-cast it once per Long Rest at a Level 4, which makes it much more powerful.
5. Mantle of the Holy Warrior
Mantle of the Holy Warrior Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Armour Type: Cloak
- Where to Find: Sold by Vicar Humbletoes, Stormshore Tabernacle, Act 3
- Relevant Perk: Cast Crusader’s Mantle at Level 3
The Mantle of the Holy Warrior is another gear piece that you can collect in Act 3. Moreover, this one is much easier to get once you reach the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate. The Stormshore Tabernacle can be found very easily, just a little way west from the Basilisk Gate where you enter.
Wearing this cloak will give your Paladin the ability to cast the Crusader’s Mantle spell once per Short Rest. The Crusader’s Mantle spell causes you to radiate a holy power that emboldens nearby allies. Consequently, their weapon attacks deal an additional 1-4 points of Radiant damage. Moreover, this is a Concentration spell, so it will last either 10 turns or as long as your Paladin can hold it for.
One tip is to use this spell preemptively. You can enter turn base mode and activate it, then end turn and start fresh. This will give you 9 turns of the buff and avoid casting it on turn one.
4. Drakethroat Glaive
Drakethroat Glaive Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Weapon Type: Glaive
- Where to Find: Can be bought from Roah Moonglow in Moonrise Towers (X: -175 Y: -175), Act 2
- Relevant Perk: Cast Draconic Elemental Weapon at Level 3
Initially, the Drakethroat Glaive might appear to be a strange fit for any Paladin who isn’t a Dragonborn. However, its main perk is very similar to a spell that the Paladin class will unlock at Level 9. Moreover, since you can get this weapon during Act 2, before you are likely a high enough level, equipping it is a great way to get access to this spell earlier than usual. To acquire it, you’ll have to find the merchant Roah Moonglow in Moonrise Towers.
The Draconic Elemental Weapon spell is very similar to the Elemental Weapon spell all Paladins will unlock at Level 9. Casting it allows you to imbue a weapon with an elemental power. You can choose from five different damage types: Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Thunder. Finally, the weapon will receive +1 bonus to Attack rolls and Damage Rolls and will deal 1-4 additional damage based on your chosen element.
What’s amazing about elemental weapons is you can add them without a turn duration. Therefore, as long as you are not concentrating, you can pre-buff with the spell and resume combat. Likely, this buff will fall off if you unequip the weapon, but it can be a big damage boost in Act 2, or give it to a companion to cast on your Paladin.
3. Sword of Justice
Sword of Justice Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Weapon Type: Greatsword
- Where to Find: Looted from Anders in the Risen Road Toll House, or a reward for Hunt the Devil quest, Act 1
- Relevant Perk: Cast Tyr’s Protection at Level 1
The best Paladin weapon you can get in Act 1 is the Sword of Justice, which comes from the same Toll House as the Gloves of Heroism. You’ll have to speak with Anders at the Toll House first. Afterward, choose to either complete the Hunt the Devil quest he gives you or fight him and take the sword from his corpse.
The Tyr’s Protection spell will allow your Paladin to surround either themselves or an ally with divine protection. Consequently, the target will gain a +2 to Armour Class, which is a Shield of Faith condition. This will last until the next Long Rest, provided your Paladin does not lose Concentration.
A powerful combination in Act one is Boots of Striding with Sword of Justice. You can cast the shield on yourself prior to combat and avoid being knocked prone, which is a massive vulnerability for the Paladin.
2. Voss’ Silver Sword
Voss’ Silver Sword Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Weapon Type: Longsword
- Where to Find: Looted from Kith’rak Voss if he is killed during his visit to camp in Act 1, or if he is killed in High Hall at the end of Act 3.
- Relevant Perk: Cast Wrathful Smite at Level 1
Kith’rak Voss has the privilege of dropping a couple of great weapons, including the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane, which you can get during Act 1 with some careful planning. Once you have that sword in your inventory, the Githyanki captain will afterward start to carry Voss’ Silver Sword. You can get this at a couple of different points in the story, depending on whether or not you decide to side with Voss.
No matter when you gain the weapon, after equipping it your Paladin can then use it to do additional damage against Githyanki, aberrations, fiends, and elementals. Moreover, you will have access to another free cat of Wrathful Smite, which your Paladin has likely already unlocked at Level 2. Nevertheless, an additional cast of this strong spell is welcome. You’ll do additional Psychic damage on hit, and also possibly Frighten your target.
1. Armour of Devotion
Armour of Devotion Information in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Armour Type: Heavy Armour
- Where to Find: Purchase from Roah Moonglow in Moonrise Tower in Act 2
- Relevant Perk: Use Eternal Devotion Class Action
At the top of the list in our Baldur’s Gate 3 Top 10 Paladin Gear Guide is the Armour of Devotion. This is another piece you can buy from Roah Moonglow in Moonrise Towers during Act 2, and it’s an absolute must-have for any Paladin in the game. Once equipped, this heavy armour will give you access to the Eternal Devotion class action.
Eternal Devotion is fantastic because it allows you to recite your Oath in exchange for regaining 1 Channel Oath Charge. You can only use this action once per Long Rest, but it’s a powerful bonus. Wearing this armour is one of the few ways in the game that you can regain a Channel Oath Charge without having to rest.
Additionally, this armour does have the downside of Disadvantage on Stealth checks. However, this is not likely to be an issue for a frontline, melee Paladin character. Moreover, the benefits of the Eternal Devotion action massively outweigh the cost!
