One of the questions that keeps popping up “what’s Best Race and Class Choices in The Elder Scrolls Online?” This really depends on what class and what role you want to play. If you want the really short answer, this post is for you.

Ultimate race doesn’t make your build, its’ your skill, your time spent investigating and constantly improving. However, there’s some math behind these racial choices and they will effect your performance. When we tested it in this video, you’re looking at around 5-10% more benefit. In the end, pick what you like, while it makes a difference it won’t make or break your build, YOU will.
NOTES:
- For magicka DPS, High Elf vs Dunmer is a very controversial choice. Essentially you’re trading a little more damage (in Dunmer) for better resource regeneration in High Elf. I prefer High Elf on everything BUT Dragonknight.
- For tanking, Nord is now getting stamina in ESO 2.5 update, they already have health and the powerful damage reduction making them a go-to for most tanks. Imperial is also a good choice for the pure massive stats and flexibility if you play other roles, while Argonian Nigthblade makes a juggernaut tank.
- For pure healing, I still like Breton though a case can be made for High Elf and a small one for Argonian in the next change.
- For PvP, I love stamina Khajiit for ganking, Orc for speed and Redguard/Wood Elf for massive sustain (especially in non-champion points campaigns). For magicka builds, I prefer Breton over High Elf for the spell resistance which helps if you’re playing vampire.
Best choice for flexibility, Dunmer, Imperial, Argonian.

- Nord Dragonknight Tank
- Redguard or Khajiit for stamina DPS
- Orc for solo PvP is a must!
Nightblade
- High Elf Nightblade for DPS
- Argonian Nightblade for Tanking
- Khajiit Nightblade for PvE DPS or PvP
Sorcerer
- Orc for Stamina Sorc for PvP and Khajiit for PvE DPS
- High Elf magicka Sorc for PvE and/or Breton Dunmer for PvP
Templar
- Breton Templar for healer (or Argonian for PvP healer)
- Dunmer for pure magicka DPS or High Elf for sustained
- Imperial for Tanking due to massive damage shield (blazing shield)
- Redguard for sustained stamina DPS, Khajiit for PvE Trials and Orc for solo PvP stamina
Hi Deltia. I’m a PvP focused Dunmer DK. I changed to a 2H / bow stamina build for 1.6 but I’m toying with the idea of going back to a S&B / destro staff magicka build to make the most of my racial passives. In terms of PvP success, do you think I ought to stick with the stamina build, or do you think I could do just as well or even better with a magicka build? Apart from raw DPS, my main concern with the magicka build is the amount of Nirnhoned armor going round in Cyrodiil, plus I’d be more squishy in 5L/2H than 5M/2H.
an excellent idea that as I noticed it was a very common question. I myself have multiple alts in different races. I’m currently addicted to pvp and have a darkelf dk and darkelf templar. the extra fire damage and etra fire resistance I find helps alot since everyone seems to use fire staff
I am getting ready for the xbox one release of ESO and I have been very conflicted on what race and class to build. I am wanting to do a DPS / Tank build where I am running duel weapons and a one hand and shield combo. Can anyone help me out here?
From the above it looks like Dunmer are your best bet, with Nords and Redguard tussling for second.
Dragonknight Imperial can play well as a Stamina DPS/Tank and will probably suit you well.
Why is healer for Sorcerers and Nightblades not filled in? And same for Sorcerer tanks?
I’m new to ESO and will start playing the ps4. My only experience thus far is from the betas. I have been reading and studying your site, and was hoping maybe you could help spread some knowledge. I want to focus on Pvp primarily and am having a hard time making a decision on what class to play. Your videos make it really difficult for me to narrow things down. 🙂
So … Could you maybe give a Pvp list of good classes/race combos? I was leaning towards DE DK, Breton Sorc, or magic casting NB or even basic assassin style hit and run type. I like the idea that any class can stealth to ambush. I’m just looking for a little help figuring out a solid class to start as a main to hit end game Pvp solo or group (small or Zerg).
Also one last question. How are healers in Pvp? Do many people tend to play healers or are there very few found? I’m curious because I thought about playing one if they seem to be more scarce than all the dps players out there. If they get points like others or AP I believe it was called, then it might be worthwhile to play one. In past games healers got the bad end of the deal when it comes to pvp and love with points for keeping people healed and alive

Because he made some of the builds with characters of a race that doesn’t best fit the build anymore and he probably doesn’t want to have to re-roll just to fix the race of one build.

On skyrim, I played a high elf because my interest in magicka bonuses. However, my playing style with my high elf is the combination destruction magic and one hand weapon like swords. What is the best race and class on ESO for players who want to use both destruction magic and one handed weapons?

Hi deltia. I will be playing this on ps4 when it drops on the 9th. This will also be my first scrolls game. I am looking to play a stamina build using sword and shield with a PvP focus and PvE survivability. I am planning on rolling a Templar but don’t know which race would be best… I’m torn between Redguard, Dunmar and imperial. Redguard for stamina passive, Dunmar for resistance to fire(great for PvP against dk I’m assuming) and imperial for the hp/stamina pool. I would greatly appreciate your take on this.

So I’m about 99% sure the best race for a DK Stamina DPS is Redguard due to the insane bonuses they get.
Also, the best race for Nightblade tanking is Argonian due to the massive bonuses to potions and healing received

After calling my local GameStop, I found out they are sold out of the imperial edition. I’ll be getting the normal pre order edition, but my original question still stands. Would it make a huge difference if I chose hi elf for a dragon night compared to choosing a dark elf? Thanks

Deltia has several videos he talks about Passives and their impact. If you are playing just for say roleplaying then choose anything. If you are wanting a strong build for end game with results then racial Passives are pretty critical over others. Also depends on spec and play style. Watch his videos to learn more and subscribe if you like to keep informed and knowledgeable

Hey Deltias, I found myself sitting at the character creation screen after watching your videos and reading on your website having a hard time making a decision for a race for a DK tank. Would my best bet be Nord or Imperial? I plan to use your T3 build. You said in the best class video that you do not like the Nord race, but in your video for tanking you said you can’t believe you’re saying it, but Nords are the best. Is the reduced damage really that much better than the bonus to max resources?

I can play my Argonian templar HEALER much better than most Breton whatever HEALER. Min/Max protects the poor player better I suppose but a good player is still a good player regardless of a few race passives.

I want a great solo pve class build, emphasis on survivability. I have settled on playing a Redguard Stamina-based build (but I am not opposed to other options if something else is much better). Any combo of tank/dps/heal style build works for me if it is very survivable. I know I know it is am mmo, but my work schedule does not work well for grouping and I prefer solo anyway (I hate to depend on someone else who may or may not know what they are doing). I am mostly debating on class a LOT and keep oscillating from one to the other… thinking ranged with sword and board to pop them at range then dig in when they close… any suggestions will be seriously appreciated thanks. 🙂
I think magicka DK is best for what you’re looking for, Dunmer specifically. But go with what you want.
Hi Deltia, I want to make an alt (been leveling a DK Nord Tank since I love tanking), but I’m kind of curious about the other DPS classes. Which would have more sustained aoe dps? For example I know a lot of mechanics can cause dps to fluctuate, and I’m more interested in helping kill several adds at once when they come in so as not to overwhelm the party and do decent damage to the boss when he’s alone. Can’t decide between sorc or nb and whether to go stamina or magicka based. Your thoughts?
Nord is weak, but if you’re choosing between two I’d go Nightblade. Nord DK make great tanks though.
That is the stupidity. What you said is so stupid do you have a ps4 .please make a DC or ad character so my nord can kill your imperial like a bug. Your character bonuses don’t do anything for you they never do work max stats is not the best choice. For anything I can have exact same stats as you no matter what you think . First off I make builds all the time for the guild running thornblade.I make armor weapons I basically help them with every detail of their character. Hi, Deltia hope all is well I’ve been really trying to convince myself to go the Sorc. Stam. build, because it looks really fun in PvE and reminded me a bit of the HoX playstyle on Age of Conan, but I played a Disciple in Vanguard which was extremely fun in PvE, but when I got to endgame PvP it was a horrific experience. I really just don’t want to go through that experience again! I’ve always enjoyed hybrid classes on traditional mmorpgs such as EQ, WoW, etc. So I was wondering what class would you recommend for someone who wanted to play a DPS 2 handed melee and have a mix of magika/stamina skills and is there any class/build that would seem similar to a Herald of Xotli from Age of Conan.

My character is a Vet 3 Imperial Dragonknight.
My question is if there is a race that fits better than imperial for stamina/magicka build switches.
I’ve seen a lot of your vids and i guess the only possibility would be a Dunmer because he would boost both attributes but it would be great if you give me some feedback if it is worth rerolling to Dunmer in my case or if the difference is not big enough to reroll.

I purchased eso since day 1 on ps4 and been watching your videos to see which race and class is the best for me I know you play on Pc but I’m just looking for tips and advice, I want to create an argonian so bad but from look of it the racial passives and skills available, they seem to not be strong enough to thrive in high end content in any of the 4 classes and would not be worth the time and effort to work with. I believe there is a build good enough to play with within this specific race but I have no leads on making this build, can anyone help me out? Have you played around with this race any?

So if i am right, we only could start to play together , if we are in the same alliance, isn’t it ? So what do you think, which alliance/races should we use. Your question is quite complex and the answer is even more complex: there is no definitive answer. It all depends on how you want to play it: race depends on if you are going stamina or Magicka build. Delia has a few great dk builds available on this site… check them out and roll the one which best fits your style. The game is fairly even in build strengths provided you select one and build around the key strengths of said build consistantly. Hope this helps 🙂

I tend to be this type of build.. The ignition. But umbra looks different and fun. Two questions. 1. Which do you feel is more powerful? 2. More fun?

I think it’s coming though I use a razor naga but movement might be tricky. I think there’s gamepads that allow you to move and control stuff with it. Might search that on amazon and hope your hands get better.

Dragonknight dps nord will and does work two handed and your pick for the second. Everyone thinks there race is better but its not I kill emperors solo with my nord dk. I solo two flag bosses . no one else can do that I know of and I’ve done it. Go hunting rage 5 med 2 heavy night silence with weapon night silence and you’ll be fine .
I’m not sure if you’ll get this or not but a nord dragonknight and dps with the best. I complete the hardest dungeon with the same setup . nord dks smash imperials all day everyday
Hey Deltia (and others), can I get your opinion? I’m a V16 dunmer DK, PvP focused. I’m running a magicka build (5H/1M/1L, S&B/resto, 5 Julianos, 4 Magnus, 3 Willpower). Sometimes I drop ppl quite quickly, but in general I’m thinking I could do better with a stamina build, even though I’ve got the wrong race for it. I see stamina builds around me killing much faster than me (mainly wrecking blow spammers) and who are seemingly able to break free and dodge roll infinitely, whereas I struggle with both magicka and stamina sustain in a long fight. What do you think? Stick with magicka or switch to stamina despite being the wrong race?

Dragonknight is more tanky and nightblade is more dps. Both great for pve/pvp. Nightblade you’ll want any class that has passives for stamina and crit bonus – khajiit, redguard, woodelf, even orc.. DK you’ll want nord or dark elf or imperial. You have to buy the imperial class from the crown store

1. Which is more up to date, your video or the table above?
2. I was googling and have heard a lot has changed and some nerfs were handed out so I’m not sure what is the most up to date information anymore. If you had a choice between dragonknight, sorcerer or nightblade, which do you think is better all around pvp and pve class. What race would you choose to go with that class?

Hey deltia for me, the “Best race” it’s the one that offers the most flexibility.. like I have a Breton Sorc which can “fit” the 3 roles as mgk or my Imperial templar that also fits all roles as mgk. Of course i’m not expecting the uber-most min-max build.. With this in mind, what races do you suggest for classes in mgk/stm?

I love Dunmer, max mag 9%, fire damage which is everywhere and stamina 6%. That or Imperial is a great choice.
Hey Deltia, I’m a Nord Templar VR16 EP/EU.
I used to do tanking combined with Dps, but in end game that’s not possible for me to combine, I currently have 180CP and I was wondering what you would say I should focus on or what kind of build would be good for me for end game pve and doing dungeons. I wanna be able to solo anything, but also able to play in groups.

I have one more thing to say before I just ignore the the things you ” think” you know about this game . how much does your wrecking blow hit for huh. My hits for 19500 and I know you cant achieve that. stop pretending you have skill with your builds and class choices you know you dont.

With out being negative towards the person that’s “suppose” to know everything. I run a nord temp and dk and both can solo single flag and duel flag bosses. Two handed in front sword and board back bar. Hundings and night silence or another 3 piece that’s gives recovery I use health and stam blur recovery put health to 20 and as much stam as possible.. Tank side I use scales for more health recovery and new sets from new dlc that have jewerly I’ve completed every tank role dungeon
,trial. Also running the dps armor from before and using max health, max stam and you’ll one people in pvp including deltia
hi Deltia i was reading your Umbra Nightblade guide and wondering if Dummer Nightblade is a good combo and if its a good combo for solo PvE play or is it a bad combo?
Dunmer is fine mix of stamina and magicka.
I’m SUPER new to the game. What is the best stat-wise race for an archer? I’m assuming I pick Nightblade class to have an archer?
Yes, go with Khajiit NB.

i have a vet 2 breton nb, but the problem is, its a stamblade. so id love a race change because i dont game that much and i dont wanna start over just for a race.
Well that sucks and I know the feeling. I don’t know if race changes are coming soon, but if you love your character, keep playing it.

I am a little bit confused about the Nightblade/Khajit is recommended, but then, when I watch the worst races video it says the opposite.
Wouldn’t the Imperial race be better for Stamina NB build?
That video was made before the Khajiit passive change. Imperial is solid all around.

I am playing on PS4 “restarted” since I haven’t played since October. And I want to go for end content, that’s why I took closer look on races. My first NB was a Dunmer because I liked the race and wanted to play NB. But now as I want to go for higher content Khajiit or Imperial would be my choice.

High Elf templar is great for regen and Breton for resist. If I had to choose one for pure healing…High Elf.

What’s the best weapons and skills and race for a nightblade
I’ve been playing since the midnight release and have made a bunch of builds, any build can survive as someone said is true. Some are a bit better but it all depends on the work you put into the characters. I have an area damage and tank build as a Dark elf, sorcerer, werewolf that’s heavy armored. It took a long time to get it where I love it and getting into the vet ranks it can drop em like flies Bc I have all the good things others do with all the choices I have but like I said it took a loooong time. I should of gone with a dark elf DK werewolf. Sounds kind of backwards but the werewolf would help with physical strength and physical resistance and the DK would be for speed and lith movements. Build with thought everybody. No ones wrong and no ones is better. Not really.
Also I’m a duel weilding player and now working on my healer. Btw healer levels soon much faster it’s crazy haha

I downloaded the game last night from the PS Store and I am currently at work and looking forward to getting home in a few hours to play it, question is.. what race to choose? I’ve never played ESO or any of the Elder Scrolls titles, however I was a big WoW player back in the day, always prefer Hunter DPS characters, something with damage at a distance then some clout to finish as they get closer. Suggestions? Also, what sort of skills are the best for moneymaking (I always used mining/fishing on WoW).. If I can have some sort of idea before I get home it will speed up the process and get me playing quicker 🙂

Why is there such a huge huge huge difference in DPS between your stamplar Maximus (27k) and laceration Nugget (32k)?
I have v16 imperial dk tank and I’m farming vwgt vicp without any problems. But when I tried to farm vMA for your T3 dk build I couldn’t pass even 1st boss bc lack of DPS. How do you farm that?should I full respec? and you didn’t make Stam dk build yet. I know you are going to but I couldn’t wait. So I started thinking about DPS class and I really like Imperials and NB but seems like khajiits are way better and stamplars are not the greatest DPS comparing to others. I watched probably all your videos since I started to play and even rerolled for DC to smack those millions of reds but still haven’t found answers for my “questions”. Hope youre able to help me. I know it’s stupid lol. Tnx for everything
Because Magicka is so much stronger then stamina at the moment. The only stamina DPS build that comes close to magicka is DK otherwise they are lacking in all areas.
Farming dungeons is all about DPS, I’m talking monster DPS. My friends can pull 30 to 40k single target and literally 100k AoE damage on magicka Nightblades. We go in with Healer/Tank running Aggressive Warhorn 100% of the time (rotation) and destroy everything in 15-20 minutes.
It takes a lot of practice, a lot time and patience but if you spec properly, max out CP, legendary gear, and everyone does their job, it’s easy mode.

I’ve heard now is a good time to get into the game. I played a Death Knight in WoW for a time and I’m curious if there is a good class for that? I want to focus on melee attacks but also have a bit of life steal for survivability. It looks like Nightblades are similar to that, but most of their stuff is magic based. Is it possible to make a Stamina Lifesteal character? Or what about a Stamina Self-Sustain character? Thanks!
I don’t know what Death Knight is, but yes a Nightblade can steal stamina with the additions of poisons.
They’re a DPS warrior that by dealing damage, steals life to keep themselves alive, making themselves somewhat tanky as well.
My friends want a tank and they are in the AD so i get to pick between High elf, Wood elf, and Khajit. I wanna do the Khajit for the tanking build but i dont wanna lose to much on dps if i have too solo when they arent around any suggestions what class and gear and how to distribute my stamina magika and health points as i lv up? Depends on a great many factors, I try to hit important numbers, not worry about attributes.
Hi deltia, I’m not very good for choicing for a class but for all my research I went for a templar… but I have trouble If I should go for a magic build or a stamina build (and what race? orc, altemer???). I would like to build something like a paladin who can do magic and chop some people down, I would like to do damage … and thank for all the work that you give to us in your webpage

For pure PvE DPS? No, PvP, solo absolutely.

Hey wouldn’t a dunmer mag plat with the bonus to fire damage deal slightly more damage than the high elfmagplar? High elf has better sustain, but the Breton has better sustain than both but lose out on dps.
Deltia can you explain why Argonian tanks are more ideal than Orc tanks. Isn’t healing received better that healing done in the sense of NB tanks?
Well the resource off a potion combined with three big pools makes it better, not necessarily the healing factor.

Hey Deltia, i am a DPS Magica Brenton Sorc and i am level champion 150 and i only have 1200 spell damage. I am really in need of some help. The sets im running are all light, 5 piece julianas and 5 piece Elegant (for the julianas the 5 pieces are the hat, robe, gloves, sash, and epoulets) (for the Elegant set i have the necklace, two rings, breeches, and the shoes) for my skils i am running crystal blast, 3 of the destruction staff spells, and entropy. for my other skill bar i have, crystal blast, power surge, dark deal, boundless storm, and bound ageis. im very confused ;(

Hello Deltia, I just Started ESO on PS4 and I love it so far. I Started a Dunmer Templar(lvl12), I wasn’t sure how i will eventually play him but i thought Dunmer gave me decent flexability. At endgame if i want to magicka dps or stamina dps or healer will dunmer be an acceptable choice to fulfill all roles. I have heard people mention that endgame parties will kick you from party for having wrong Race/class. I want to focus on healing and dps caster for my templar and maybe play with stamina builds and hate to waste time leveling a race that will be insufficient. Plus Dunmer look so cool. I am early enough into the leveling process to start over if there is a better race to play for filling multiple roles. Thanks for the great posts btw.

Hello Deltia, I am new to ESO, just started last week. I started with a Dunmer Templar (currently lvl 12)thinking it would be decent at stamina dps, healing and magika dps for endgame. I like the idea of switching builds frequently. Will the dunmer allow me the flexibility to play those roles decently with his racial stats or is there another race you would suggest. I understand he wouldnt be the best at all roles but good enough that he wouldnt suffer at endgame or is there another race you would suggest for that kind of flexibility? Or should i just level a race for a specific build and have 3 or 4 different templars? I guess i am looking for adaptability.

Hey deltia, I’m in a tight spot and need some help. I recently created a dunmer magicka dk and found out that they apparently suck. I just want to know what are some top combinations that will deal great dps and excel in pve/pvp
They are fine just lack burst that other classes can offer in PvP. I don’t know what you mean by combinations, if you’re talking gear/skills, I have some older builds that worked in the past that might be a good basis to check out.
Hi Deltia, would you recommend a Templar or DK for a group PvE tank? I’ll play Imperial or maybe Nord. I’d like to do some solo content too, Maelstrom etc, but vet dungeons and trials would be the main focus. Thanks for your awesome site!

With the new racial updates coming I plan on changing the race of my Stamplar. That being said, I cannot make up my mind between a Redguard and Khajiit.
I use this character solely for PvE (end game vet wgt, icp, trials, maelstrom, etc) and run a crit build that follows your stamplar build very closely.
I like the Redguards sustain but I also like the new stamina bonuses Khajiits are getting in addition to the crit %. If you were in my shoes, which would you pick?

Hello Deltia, I’m currently running a version of your Templar Warden build. Right now I’m play as a Dunmer and mostly play PVP, but am wondering if I should switch to another race. I’m thinking of using my 10 character to make one build for each race. I made Orc dragon knight tank as main but sadly some races are inherently inferior and don’t exceed in a single build. Did the new update balance the races?

With the update to the Argonian Passive, “Quick To Mend”, now increasing healing done as well as received, and “Amphibious” being replaced with “Resourceful” which increases Max Magicka would you say that Argonian’s are one of the better, if not the best choice for a Templar Healer?
I think it’s the best pure healer, but not nearly as good in damage.

What would b a good solo tank build. Right now im runnin a redguard stam dk. 5 piece master armor 4 hist bark until i get footmans and engine. I do alot of dungeon dives n jump into pvp.. also still workin finishin the story.

Not sure if my last post made it. But i have a question. What would be a good solo tank set up. As of now i have a redgaurd stam dk tank, i run 5 pc master armor n 4pc hist. Untill i get engine and footman. I do alot of dungeon dives and jump into pvp. I tried trials but i dont plan on hitting them again until i get at least 500 cp. I also have the rest of the caldwells to finish and the expansions. What would be a good setup to run for players like me?

Is there any decent way to make a melee Nightblade for PvE? I like using Shadowy Disguise and Concealed Weapon as a combo, but it’s obviously slow damage wise because one isn’t doing damage but guarantees a crit.

If I want to run both Atlas and Omega at end game but leveling with omega and even mixing around in between the two of them for theory crafting which race do you think would be best for that… High elf, imperial, or Breton…
Being new to game but not new to Mmos based on what passive a they each have and being able running either I’m thinking the best may be Breton followed by Imperial then High Elf for that purpose. I know you like high elf a lot but for my goals do I have the order correct and thus should choose Breton … I chose imperial first and have him to level 7 however I’m having second thoughts and thinking maybe Bretons best all around to move between the two builds. Or do I gave it all wrong and there is another best race for my concept ?
To be honest, go with Dunmer since it has both max magicka and max stealth.
What will the stealth be for in the build … sorry just confused

Ok so I’ve probably put 60 hrs in just so I can find out what my actual play style is. I’m partial to Wood Elf for nostalgia but I’m running a primarily stamwarden (using ice fortress so can’t say full stam). There are many flaws in my build but with that I’ve found that what I want out of my main is a hybrid between burst and sustain. Any tips, ideas, general knowledge would be much appreciated. I started playing this game when it dropped for PS4 but life happened. The release of the morrowind hardcopy brought it back in my gaming spectrum. I really love it, haven’t played anything else since I brought it home.

He, Deltia! I’ve read some blogs somewhere and it said wood elf is best for bow. So, what is the best class for wood elf that use bow and dual daggers. It’s for tank and/or DPs wise
