This build has been updated for the Updated 42, the Gold Road Chapter of the Elder Scrolls Online (ESO).
Magicka Templar PvP Gameplay in ESO
The ESO Magicka Templar PvP Build is ideal for players looking for maximum survivability with high burst potential. Magplar PvP is a great place to start because it’s simple yet effective and has a main spammable damage ability that also heals you.
Templar Class Pros
- Best Execute: Radiant Glory is the pinnacle of ranged executes, providing powerful damage and healing based on damage dealt.
- Beginner Friendly: Magplars are excellent choices for newcomers to PvP, offering innate toughness, a unique cleanse ability, and burst healing.
- One-vs-One Prowess: Experienced duelists can excel in one-vs-one encounters against nearly any class. The Magplar’s toolkit provides ample opportunities for offense and defense, making it a formidable opponent in duels and small-scale engagements.
Templar Class Cons
- Weak Sustain: Templars struggle with resource management, requiring multiple skills or sets to maintain their resources in prolonged fights. This can leave them vulnerable to resource depletion and subsequent loss of effectiveness.
- Lower Mobility: Like many other classes, Templars suffer from poor innate mobility. This limitation can hinder their ability to maneuver effectively in fast-paced combat situations, making them susceptible to being kited or overwhelmed by faster opponents.
- Constant Buff Cycling: Maintaining optimal performance as a Magplar requires frequent cycling of buffs to maximize resource management, damage output, and survivability. This constant need for buff management can be demanding and distract from other aspects of combat.
Playing a Magicka Templar in PvP revolves around leveraging your resilience, healing abilities, and versatile toolkit to outlast and outmaneuver your opponents. Whether engaging in close-quarters combat or skirmishing from range, the key is to capitalize on your strengths while mitigating your weaknesses.

Use frost staff or sword and shield.

Honor The Dead (Morph of Rushed Ceremony | Skill Line : Restoring Light) – Burst single target heal.
Swarming Scion (Morph of Blood Scion | Skill Line : Vampire) – Damage dealing survivability ultimate.
Gear 1 – Melee
Use if you want a melee aggressive build and check skills to match above for ESO Magicka Templar PvP build:
Slot | Type | Set | Trait | Glyph |

Chest | Heavy | Soulshine | Reinforced | Prismatic |
Legs | Heavy | Soulshine | Reinforced | Prismatic |
Gloves | Light | Rallying Cry | Well-fitted | Magicka |
Boots | Heavy | Soulshine | Well-fitted | Magicka |
Belt | Light | Armor of the Trainee | Well-fitted | Magicka |

Secondary | Axe | Soulshine | Charged | Absorb Stamina |

Necklace | Sea-Serpent’s Coil | Infused | Magicka Recovery
Ring 1 | Rallying Cry | Bloodthirsty | Spell Damage
Ring 2 | Rallying Cry | Bloodthirsty | Spell Damage |
- Roksa the Warped: best in slot resource sustain when running vampire you can use Bewitch Sugar Skulls food for a bigger stat pool.
- Soulshine: Great heavy armor set that boosts our weapon damage when using the channel and applies when we switch the back bar.
- Rallying Cry: An incredible five-piece set that makes us a more defensible and big boost to weapon and spell damage.
- Armor of the Trainee: Added stats with a one-piece item set.
- Sea-Serpent’s Coil: Obtained through Mythic System, click here for lead locations. Used because it’s essentially two five-piece damage sets in one, with nearly zero drawbacks if using Vampire Form.
Skills: Setup 2 Range
Front Bar
Binding Javelin (Morph of Piercing Javelin | Skill Line : Aedric Spear) – Used as a stun which cannot be blocked. Use just before meteor or POTL pops for huge combo damage.
Power of the Light (Morph of Backlash | Skill Line : Dawn’s Wrath) – Burst damage, procs minor spell damage bonus and reduces armor. This is your killing tool as it soaks up damage like a balloon. After 6 seconds, a percentage of the amount of damage you’ve done is released for huge burst. The trick to killing players is to fill up the damage, stun and beam. This morph is stamina based and procs our gear set.
Radiant Glory (Morph of Radiant Destruction | Skill Line : Dawn’s Wrath) – Best single target execute for PvP, to be used around 40% health or lower. Make sure you’re in back and not interrupted.
Dark Flare (Morph of Solar Flare | Skill Line : Dawn’s Wrath) – A hard-hitting range spammable that will lead into your combo meteor, javelin beam. The channel hits hard if landed correctly, and it debuffs healing.
Living Dark (Morph of Eclipse | Skill Line : Dawn’s Wrath) – Incredible healing per second and much less resources intensive to maintain.
Shooting Star (Morph of Meteor | Skill Line : Mages Guild) – Ranged bursty ultimate combined with Javelin to stun/drop block for massive nuke.
Back Bar
Channeled Focus (Morph of Rune Focus | Skill Line : Restoring Light) – This skill will give you resource sustain and your armor buff. You’ll also get nice healing standing in the small rune IF you have a high health pool. I’d recommend newer players or folks unfamiliar with PvP to run max HP due to this ability and Living Dark scaling off max health.
Extended Ritual (Morph of Cleansing Ritual | Skill Line : Restoring Light) – Strong AoE heal and cleanse. Consider this your flex spot, just use spell damage/critical potions if your resources are good.
Elusive Mist (Morph of Mist Form | Skill Line : Vampire) – You have two choices for mobility skills Race Against Time vs Elusive Mist in Stage 3 Vampire. Mist provides the greatest survivability combined with the Undeath passive HOWEVER, you’ll have to manage your resources more effectively. I currently prefer the benefits of a stage three vampire, but swap to RAT if you don’t like it.
Resolving Vigor (Morph of Vigor | Skill Line : Assault) – Good burst heal and it gives minor armor buff to be combined with major.
Honor The Dead (Morph of Rushed Ceremony | Skill Line : Restoring Light) – Great burst heal that gives a bit of sustain back. The trick is to not relay on this ability unless you are very low. You’ll want heals from your rune, bubble, and ritual to do the majority of the work as this gets costly especially in no CP situations.
Practiced Incantation (Morph of Rite of Passage | Skill Line : Restoring Light) – God mode Healing. Swap in whatever defensive ultimate here.
Gear 2 – Range
This is my go-to for playing high MMR battlegrounds, outnumbered PvP, and Imperial City Sewers with the ESO Magicka Templar:
Slot | Type | Set | Trait | Glyph |
Head | Heavy | Roksa the Warped | Well-fitted | Prismatic |
Shoulders | Medium | Roksa the Warped | Well-fitted | Magicka |
Chest | Heavy | Daedric Trickery | Reinforced | Prismatic |
Legs | Heavy | Armor of the Trainee | Well-fitted | Prismatic |
Gloves | Light | Snake in the Stars | Well-fitted | Magicka |
Boots | Light | Snake in the Stars | Well-fitted | Magicka |
Belt | Light | Snake in the Stars | Well-fitted | Magicka |
Weapon One | Fire Staff | Snake in the Stars | Sharpened | Weapon Damage |
Weapon Two | Ice Staff | Daedric Trickery | Powered | Escapist’s Poison IX |

Ring 1 | Daedric Trickery | Bloodthirsty | Spell Damage
Ring 2 | Daedric Trickery | Bloodthirsty | Spell Damage |
Monster Helm & Mythic
Roksa the Warped: Obtained in Veteran Bal Sunnar dungeon, Scribes of Fate DLC. Used to counter the weak resource sustain of the magplar. Gives great resource sustain without the Engine Guardian droid.
Sea-Serpent’s Coil: Obtained through the Antiquities System, click here for lead locations. Used because it’s essentially two five-piece damage sets in one, with nearly zero drawbacks if using Vampire Form.
Armor of the Trainee: Obtained in overland starter areas or guild trader. Added stats with a one-piece item set.
FLEX OPTIONS
- Balorgh: Incredible burst if you don’t struggle with resources.
- Engine Guardian: Easier to obtain than Roksa, great sustain and tanky monster helm.
- Markyn Ring of Majesty: Great all-around defensive and offensive mythic.
- Torc of Tonal Constancy: Great resource sustain mythic, though it is a bit overkill with the other sustain pieces already in this build.
Gear Sets
Daedric Trickery: Craftable in Vvardenfell Morrowind. Great defensive set that can trigger major buffs while on your front bar.
Snake in the Stars: Obtained from Cyrodiil Rewards of Worthy mail or bought from Guild Traders. This will debuff targets healing alongside the Dark Flare debuff, making it much easier to kill players stacking heals.
Alternatives
- Mara’s Balm : Great survivability set.
- Rallying Cry: Great offensive and defensive set, though it comes in light armor.
- Robes of the Hist: Similar to Mara’s but less relevant now.
- Wretched Vitality: Great resource sustain set if you struggle.
- Powerful Assault: Great set to add damage to you and your group and the buff stacks with Rallying Cry.
- Deadly Strikes: Great damage increase to channels like Radiant Oppression, Dark Flare and Sweeps if you use those skills.
- Way of Fire: Great burst armor set, though it comes in heavy.
- War Maiden: Great for raw damage on magicka abilities, which is most of ours on the front bar.
- Order’s Wrath: Craftable set that gives great damage overall and is easy to obtain.
- Soulshine: Good spell damage if using dark flare/sweeps/beam frequently to proc it.
Armor of the Trainee: Obtained in overland starter areas or guild trader. Added stats with a one-piece item set.
No-Proc No CP
This setup is made for Cyrodiil Campaigns or IC that doesn’t allow proc sets.
Slot | Type | Set | Trait | Glyph |
Head | Medium | Magma Incarnate | Well-fitted | Prismatic |
Shoulders | Light | War Maiden | Well-fitted | Magicka |

Gloves | Heavy | Mark of Pariah | Well-fitted | Magicka |
Boots | Light | War Maiden | Well-fitted | Magicka |

Necklace | Torc of Tonal Constancy | Infused | Spell Damage
Ring 1 | Mark of Pariah | Infused | Spell Damage
Ring 2 | Mark of Pariah | Infused | Spell Damage |
- Magma Incarnate: Monster set helmet obtained from Veteran Dread Cellar dungeon (Blackwood zone), Waking Flame DLC. Shoulders obtained from Vendor: Urgarlag Chief-bane (Undaunted Pledge Master). Great sustain for a one-piece item set.
- Mark of the Pariah: Obtained from Wrothgar overland, Orsinium DLC or bought from traders. Most tankiness from a 5pc in no proc PvP.
- War Maiden: Obtained in overland Morrowind zone or bought from traders. Great damage that applies to nearly all damage abilities. Flex in Deadly if you want to do just Jabs.
- Blessing of Potentates: Obtained in Cyrodiil Vlastarus Elite Gear Vendor or bought from traders. Great damage reduction two-piece.
- Torc or Tonal Constancy: Obtained from the Antiquities system with incredible resource sustain.
Skill 3 – Bomber
Front Bar
Focused Charge (Skill Line : Aedric Spear) – Gap closer and stun.
Solar Barrage (Morph of Solar Flare | Skill Line : Dawn’s Wrath) – Increases the damage of your other Templar skills and deals AOE damage.
Living Dark (Morph of Eclipse | Skill Line : Dawn’s Wrath) – Restores health when you take direct damage from other players.
Puncturing Sweep (Morph of Puncturing Strikes | Skill Line : Aedric Spear) – Main spammable that also heals you.
Whirling Blades (Morph of Whirlwind | Skill Line : Dual Wield) – AOE spammable that doubles as an execute.
Dawnbreaker of Smiting (Morph of Dawnbreaker | Skill Line : Fighters Guild) – Conal AOE ultimate that also stuns enemies.
Back Bar
Channeled Focus (Morph of Rune Focus | Skill Line : Restoring Light) – Restores magicka every second and gives you Major Resolve.
Blazing Spear (Morph of Spear Shards | Skill Line : Aedric Spear) – Delayed AOE damage and synergy to allies.
Elusive Mist (Morph of Mist Form | Skill Line : Vampire) – Mobility skill used for disengaging or gap closing.

Solar Prison (Morph of Nova | Skill Line : Dawn’s Wrath) – Big AOE ultimate that you drop when bombing.

- Plaguebreak: Great medium armor set for bombing that allows us to sustain Whirling Blades.
- Markyn Ring of Majesty: Great all around defensive and offensive mythic.
- Armor of the Trainee: Obtained in overland starter areas or trader.
Scribing Skills & Grimoires – ESO Magicka Templar PvP Build
Traveling Knife and Soul Burst are the two best Grimoires (skills) for a Magicka Templar PvP build. Traveling Knife gives you a ranged bleed attack that acts like Rending Slashes but doesn’t require Master Dual Wield to be effective. Moreover, Traveling Knife can be given a stun in the focus script for classes lacking a ranged stun. Soul Burst is a helpful crowd control and buff skill. You can immobilize, pull, or snare targets and get your favorite minor buffs. There are other scripting combinations you can run, but it all depends on your chosen playstyle. Just make sure you’re not choosing buffs or debuffs that are already sourced through the build.
Below are the suggested combination of Grimoires, focus, signature, and affix scripts:
- Traveling Knife (dual wield) – Bleed or Stun (focus script), Lingering Torment or Assassin’s Misery (signature script), Berserk or Vulnerability (Affix Script)
- Soul Burst (soul magic) – Immobilize or Pull (focus script), Class Mastery or Hunter’s Snare (signature script), Courage or Expedition (Affix Script)
The Scribing System utilizes one of 11 new skills from the Gold Road Chapter called Grimoires. With Grimoires, you can customize spells via Scripts. The scribing feature requires the purchase of the Gold Road Chapter (sponsored link). To learn more about scribing, check out our full guide here.
Race
The best racial choice for the Magplar PvP build is below:
- High Elf: Gain resource sustain passive, max magicka, and weapon and spell damage. The downside of High Elf is a lack of stamina or flame resistance.
- Dark Elf: Gain max magicka, stamina, and weapon and spell damage. The flame resistance is also helpful and considered the strongest overall PVE DPS race.
- Khajiit: This race gets recovery, max stats, and critical damage and healing. The Khajiit is a great option if you aren’t over the critical damage cap of 125%, but it loses effectiveness in larger group content.
Attributes
You should aim to reach 32,000 health; therefore, we recommend a 32 health and 32 magicka attribute split.
Mundus Stone
The best mundus stone is the Atronach for resource sustain. You can use Thief or Apprentice if your damage is low.

Consumables
The best consumables for the Magicka Templar PvP build are Bewitch Sugar Skulls food and Essence of Spell Power. Bewitched Sugar Skulls give a massive boost to overall stats but sacrifices recovery. If you struggle with recovery, use Orzorga’s Smoked Bear Haunch or cheaper Jewels of Misrule. The Essence of Spell Power potions are your source of major spell damage and critical chance buffs with the alchemy passive Medicinal Use. Immovability potions are also helpful. Below are our recommended food and potion choices:
- Bewitched Sugar Skulls: Increase Max Health by 4620, Max Stamina and Max Magicka by 4250, and Health Recovery by 462 for 2 hours. Ingredients: Scrib Jelly, Flour, Columbine, Bervez Juice, and Honey.
