Everything About the Epilogue in Baldur’s Gate 3
In Baldur’s Gate 3, the epilogue will pick up your story six months after the defeat of the Elder Brain. The setting is an outdoor dinner party, with tables full of good food, drink, and nearby entertainment. Arranged by Withers, he has used his mysterious magic to call you and your companions back for a gathering.
The Epilogue was not part of the original launch of Baldur’s Gate 3 but instead was released as part of Patch 5, with no additional cost to players. It provides you a chance to converse and catch up with all of your companions. Find out what they’ve been doing and how they have been. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to read several letters from influential NPCs you helped along the way.
However, while most players will see the epilogue at the end of their game, there are exceptions depending on the choices you previously made. Additionally, sometimes, even if you make it to the party, intrusive thoughts may have their way.

Epilogue Location in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Epilogue does not take place in an officially named location, but you’ll discover that it looks suspiciously like the place you originally made camp at in the Wilderness during Act 1. The area has been upgraded a bit, with a large feasting table, and nicer tents around the rim. All of your recruited companions will appear. Some will mostly stand in a designated location, while others will wander around the camp.
There are two points of interest at the epilogue campsite:
- Clothing Chest – On the west side. Holds various clothing sets and dyes so you can customize your look.
- Chest of Grateful Words – Underneath an open tent on the east side. Holds letters from various NPCs. Additionally, multiple issues of the Baldur’s Mouth Gazette will update you on the state of the city.
Finally, when you are ready to End Your Adventure, head down to the southeast corner of the map. Across a fallen tree, you will find that Withers has set up a home of sorts in the abandoned building here. Speak to Withers and you can conclude your epilogue at any time.
How to Start the Epilogue in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Baldur’s Gate 3 epilogue will start automatically after the defeat of the Elder Brain and the conclusion of the cutscene where your party regroups down on the docks. While there you will get some information as to what could be the future for some companions, while others will be more of a mystery.
The screen will fade to black, and after a loading screen, the Narrator will break in to tell you about an invitation you have received. As her narration continues, your character will be transported into the party scene the epilogue takes place.
Next, there will be a short scene where Withers welcomes you and your allies back together again. This is brief, and he’ll end by encouraging everyone to visit and catch up.
Attendees for the Epilogue in Baldur’s Gate 3
The party attendees at the Epilogue for Baldur’s Gate 3 will depend on which companions you recruited and who remained in with the larger group after the final fight. Furthermore, if you recruited Scratch and the Owlbear Cub during Act 1, then they may possibly be in attendance, as well. Volo may also be in attendance if you saved him back in Acts 1 and 3.
Finally, the method and manner of your own character’s attendance can vary greatly. Generally, this will depend on your choice of a Dark Urge Origin, or if you choose to become an Illithid before the final confrontation.
Dark Urge Origin Character
If you played a Dark Urge character who followed a redemption path in BG3, then your epilogue will play out much like normal. However, if you embraced the Urge, but didn’t take over the Netherbrain for your father Bhaal, then his punishment is stark. Your character will appear at the outskirts of the party, little more than a mindless animal thinking about your next kill. However, the scene will fade before anything more plays out.

Illithid Transformation
No matter whether you choose to side with the Emperor or Prince Orpheus before the final confrontation, your character will also need to decide if they want to make a full Illithid transformation. If you do so and also choose to continue living after the final fight, then you will appear in your Illithid form at the epilogue party.
As the party starts, you can speak with any of your former companions. The conversations will proceed normally until you reach the third person. During that conversation, the urge to consume their brain will trigger. Consequently, you will then have to pass a 15 DC Constitution check to resist the urge. If you fail the check, then the whole party will turn hostile and attack you. After the fight, Withers kicks you out of the party. This ends the epilogue for you.
However, if you pass the check, then you’ll be able to continue enjoying the party. Speaking to all of the rest of your companions should not trigger another resistance check again.
Companions
Astarion
Astarion’s personal quest, The Pale Elf can be resolved in one of two ways. He can either become a Vampire Ascendant, or remain a Vampire Spawn. Consequently, his appearance and demeanor at the party will be determined by which choice you helped him make.
As Vampire Ascendant, Astarion will be flush with this new power and his grown influence over the city of Baldur’s Gate. If you have romanced him this playthrough and are now his spawn, then he will send you out to speak to the others in the party. Astarion is above such petty things as friendly conversations, but he still wants any information you can gather. If you haven’t romanced him, then you can call him out on his ‘Cazador-like’ behavior. He will pay little heed to this concern, and brush off the implications.
If he has killed Cazador, but remained a Vampire Spawn, then he has adopted a new identity of rogue vigilante. Still forced to live out of the sun, but now satisfying his blood cravings by killing those who deserve it. If a romanced Astarion was convinced to help lead the freed spawn in the Underdark, then he mentioned a safe haven in some abandoned ruins.
Finally, if you ignore the conclusion of his quest before completing the game, then Astarion will again ask for your help killing Cazador. Agree and Astarion will say you can set off the next morning. Reject him, and a hurt Astarion will remark that he shouldn’t have expected more.
Gale
Gale’s appearance at the party is determined by the conclusion of his personal quest, The Wizard of Waterdeep. He has three possible different outcomes: return the Crown of Karsus to Mystra, keep the Crown to become a god, or sacrifice himself to destroy the Absolute.
If he does not keep the crown, then Gale and Tara will begin a new life at the Blackstaff Academy’s School of Illusion. Gale will become a professor and likes to threaten unruly students with the power of the Orb. In truth, he has either been cured of the Orb by Mystra, or she simply deactivates it. Moreover, no matter your class, Gale will ask you to come to the school and guest lecture. On the other hand, if you’ve romanced Gale in this scenario, then you both will arrive at the party as newlyweds.
If Gale decides to take the crown for himself, he arrives at the party as a God of Ambition. Tara is unhappy with this change of circumstances, remarking that she feels he hasn’t really learned from past mistakes. If you’ve romanced Gale before his ascension, then at the end of the party he will ask you to come with him to the heavens. This won’t just be as a consort, but you will become a god, as well.
Finally, if Gale used the Netherese Orb to destroy the Netherbrain, then he will ‘attend’ the party as a magical projection. This Spectral Voice speaks much like the projection who speaks to you after Gale has died in regular combat. However, you’re informed that Gale can no longer be reconstituted. It will pass on a farewell letter from Gale that includes his Last Will and Testament.
Halsin
In BG3, Halsin does not have a personal companion quest, and therefore, his personality remains much the same as it was throughout the whole of the game. However, because he is a romance option, the epilogue can play out somewhat differently if you are partnered with him.
If romanced, then you and Halsin have been living in Thaniel’s realm, providing sanctuary to all who seek it. A community has built up there, and Halsin frets to be away from it. He worries that the party will reawaken a desire for adventure from you. Reassure him, and he’ll have a few bear puns for your amusement.
Jaheira
Jaheira was not a possible romance in Baldur’s Gate 3, there is still a possible change for her in the epilogue depending on how you play out her full story. You will need to have recruited Minsc. Then, return to the Guildhall and side against the Zhentarim. Finally, bring Minsc along to a conversation with Nine-Fingers Keane. Afterward, when you visit camp for a Long Rest, a scene will play with Jahiera and Minsc arguing.
If you resolve this conflict between them, then Minsc can be convinced to not rely so much on Jaheira. She will then retire from the High Harpers, and temporarily resettle back at her home in Baldur’s Gate. However, at the party, she shares that she’s feeling the itch for adventure again. Instead of going back to the city, she may decide to travel after the party is over.
On the other hand, if you do not resolve Minsc and Jaheira’s differences, she will still feel responsible for him. She will remain a High Harper, keeping an eye on Minsc, while managing all of the needs of the Harper organization. She won’t be unhappy, but it’s a lot of work on her plate.
Karlach
Like the other main companions in the game, Karlach’s presence in the epilogue is determined by decisions made before the final fight, and on the docks after the Netherbrain’s defeat. There are three possible outcomes for Karlach at the end of the game. First, she can die, as her Infernal Engine overheats. Second, if she volunteered to become an Illithid, she will appear at the party in that new form. Finally, if she remained a Teifling but you convinced her to go to Avernus, then she will appear as her normal self at the party.
As an Illithid, Karlach will report at the party that she has partnered with a healer for terminally ill patients. They agree to give Karlach their brains for consumption after their death, and in turn, their thoughts and memories can live on through her. She does warn herself to not think too hard about the nearby brains of friends and remarks that she can’t stay long because she’ll be hungry soon.
If Karlach was convinced to return to Avernus, she may return to the party with either Wyll or your character, or both. In dialogue, she reveals that she has a lead on a possible permanent fix for her Infernal Engine. It will require an assault on one of Zariel’s secret forges, but Karlach thinks she can get in via an old friendship with one of the guards. She’s excited about the thought of coming home for good.
Lae’zel
Lae’zel’s personal quest, The Githyanki Warrior, can play out in a mix of ways depending on your choices. Important decisions will include to accept or reject Vlaakith, freeing or sacrificing Prince Orpheus, and if she returns to the Astral Plane or remains in Faerûn.
First, if Lae’zel sided with Vlaakith and accepted the offer of Ascension, then she will not attend the party. Withers will reveal that Vlaakith consumes Githyanki souls when they ascend, and he cannot sense Lae’zel’s presence at all.
If Lae’zel sided with Orpheus, but is convinced to remain behind with you, then she launches a crusade to slay every Vlaakith-aligned Githyanki outpost on the Sword Coast. Moreover, she’ll invite you to join her in rooting out one of the last major strongholds in Chult.
On the other hand, if Lae’zel left with Orpheus then she will appear at the party as an astral projection. She’ll tell you about her upcoming diplomacy mission to the Githzerai, with whom she and Prince Orpheus are hoping to form an alliance.
Finally, if the Githyanki Egg was given to Lae’zel back in Act 1, she will speak of the young man born from it. He has become an adventurer, like his adoptive mother.
Minsc
Minsc isn’t recruited until the last half of Act 3, but he still has a couple of different possibilities for how his story concludes in the epilogue. Both of these tie in strongly with Minsc’s recruitment quest. After saving Minsc and recruiting him, you can return to the Guildhall. This is where the story can split if you never follow up with Nine-Fingers Keane.
If you bring Minsc back to the Guildhall, side against the Zhentarim, and Minsc and Nine-Fingers resolve their differences afterward, then Minsc will become part of the Guild. He’s appointed himself a sort of ‘Barbarian Jiminy Cricket’. He uses his muscles to stop wanton thievery and murder, then instead of immediately ending them, tries to convince them to change their ways. If you played a Dark Urge character on a redemption run, he even uses us as a heroic example. Results may vary, as evidenced by a very nervous halfling he brought along.
However, if you side with the Zhentarim, or don’t bring him to the final conversation with Nine-Fingers, then he becomes a sorry figure. Dressed in rags, he reveals that the Zhentarim had kidnapped him. If Withers had not just whisked him away to the party, they would have shortly executed him.
Minthara
Minthara is another potential companion who does not have her own personal quest. However, you will get a chance during Act 3 to encourage her to stay in the city of Baldur’s Gate. If she is persuaded by your encouragement, then she will remain in the city after the final battle. True to her nature, she seeks to have influence over the city, if not outright leadership. By the time of the party, she has mostly been scheming in the shadows. She claims that the political intrigue is enjoyable, and is confident that the citizens will someday accept her rule.
However, if Minthara does not stay in Baldur’s Gate, then she will return to the Underdark. As an apostate of Lolth, she seeks to reclaim House Baenre of Menzoberranzan and fights against the Spider-Queen.
Shadowheart
Shadowheart’s place in the epilogue is determined by two major decisions that you make during her Daughter of Darkness quest. First, whether she embraced or rejected Shar. Secondly, whether or not her parents are still alive.
First, if Shadowheart accepted Shar, defeated Viconia, and becomes Mother Superior, she shares that the devastation of the city has led to many new recruits for the House of Grief.
If Shadowheart rejected Shar but killed her parents, then she will become a vigilante avenger, slaying Sharran assassins. These assassins hunt her, in turn, and as a result she typically doesn’t feel free to visit her friends. However, if you or Wyll went to Avernus with Karlach, then she expresses a desire to join the group once Karlach and fully return to Faerûn.
Finally, if Shadowheart rejected Shar and saved her parents, then she will move in with them and take up the life of a farmer. Additionally, she cares for a number of pets, including an orphan wolf cub. In fact, if the Armoured Owlbear Cub has survived the final fight, then you can encourage her to give him a good home.
Wyll
Wyll’s story in the epilogue can branch into one of several different paths, depending on how you resolved certain points of his personal quest. In Act 1, the major decision is whether or not to kill Karlach, which can turn him into a devil. In Act 3 there are a couple of major choices: does he escape his contract with Mizora and does he become the Grand Duke?
The first possible ending for Wyll occurs if you never finish The Blade of Frontiers quest, or if he was never transformed into a Devil and did not accept the title of Duke. In this case, Wyll will remain the Blade of Frontiers. The major change is that he is no longer a Warlock getting his powers from Mizora. Rather, he will now be a Ranger, and tell you about some of his most recent adventures.
Wyll can choose to become a Grand Duke of Baldur’s Gate, no matter if he broke his contract with Mizora or not. If he is still allied with her, he will comment that she is actually helping to rebuild the city, but he doesn’t know what her larger agenda is. Either way, he will attend the party dressed fashionably tell you that he has settled into the leadership role surprisingly well. Wyll’s official title is Grand Duke of the Wyrm, Heart of the Gate. Furthermore, if you romanced him, Wyll offers to nominate you as Grand Duke of the Coast, Doom of the Dead Three.
Blade of Avernus
A popular ending for Wyll is that of becoming the Blade of Avernus. In this scenario, he will have spared Karlach in Act 1 and become a devil, but rejected becoming the Grand Duke. Instead, as Karlach waits for her Infernal Engine to overheat at the end of the final fight, Wyll offers to go to Avernus with her. Even if Karlach chooses to die, if Wyll broke his contract, then he will still travel to Avernus by himself, seeking revenge on Mizora. Moreover, if you romanced Wyll then you can join him on his hunt, with the two of you tracking down a way for Wyll to reverse the tracking magic in his stone eye.
Finally, Wyll can join Karlach in Avernus even if he still maintains a contract with Mizora. If you, Wyll, and Karlach all go into Avernus together, then she will task him with slaying a devil there. Wyll is surprised at the amount of freedom she gives him otherwise, but perhaps she is just pleased he will have help will carrying out her orders. If he entered Avernus with Karlach after breaking his contract, then he will recount some of their adventures, and hopes that Karlach can soon have her engine fixed so that they can come back for good.
Camp Followers
Scratch
It wouldn’t be a party without the best boy Scratch! He will appear if you did not give him up to Angry Mar’hyah in Act 3. Scratch will want to play fetch with Astral Prism, which you can find on the ground after interacting with him the first time.
Additionally, you can use Speak with Animals to have a brief conversation with Scratch. He shares that he’s been living happily in Baldur’s Gate with a girl named Mindy.
Owlbear Cub
The Owlbear Cub can appear in the epilogue in two separate ways. First, as a fully grown Owlbear without armour. This cub was not upgraded by Dammon and did not participate in the final battle. Secondly, if you did have Dammon upgrade the Owlbear Cub, then he will appear in the epilogue still wearing his full plate.
Overall, the Owlbear Cub’s dialogue in the epilogue is only slightly different depending on these two scenarios. Without the armour he mourns the death of a pet friend he made. While with the armour, he took revenge against the kraken.
No matter whether the Owlbear has armour or not, he will end the conversation by saying that he is tired and would like to rest somewhere safe. If available, you can suggest two options. First is Halsin, if you recruited him and brought him through to the epilogue. Secondly, is Shadowheart, if she rejected Shar and saved her parents. After you make your choice, go speak to either of these two companions to get their approval of the plan.
Volo
The irrepressible Volo is also attending the party, provided that you saved him in Acts 1 and 3. Perhaps predictably, he has been working on writing a very truthful, historically sound accounting of your hero’s and the companion’s fight against the Absolute. He’s obviously totally justified in forging your signature in an effort to get the book published.
Withers
Withers is the reason for the party gathering of the epilogue, having used his mysterious powers to bring you and all your companions back together again. After he gives a short welcome speech, Withers will retreat to the small ‘home’ at the southeastern corner of the map. He won’t have too much to say in dialogue. Instead, when you are finished speaking to all of your companions and wish to end the night, you can prompt this by speaking to Withers.
This will trigger the ‘good’ ending, where Withers thanks you all and also tells you not to forget or forego your bonds, lest you be needed again. After that, you can choice a dialogue option for a toast and then the credits roll.
Additionally, Withers can also end the party more abruptly if you take aggressive actions against your friends. This can particularly happen if you attend in Illithid form, and fail the check to keep yourself from eating a companion’s brain. This will trigger a fight, and after combat is over, Withers will kick you out through a portal.
Miscellaneous Attendees
Raphael can appear at the epilogue party if you agreed to his deal in Act 3, and then gave the Crown of Karsus to him. Additionally, he can also appear if you agreed to the deal and then broke it. If for some reason you left him alive after escaping the House of Hope he will be very displeased.
Moreover, Raphael can also appear if Gale used the Crown to ascend. As the God of Ambition, Gale now has the power to kick Raphael out. However, Gale will then leave shortly after, saying that he need to prepare against Raphael stealing the Crown.
Tara, Gale’s loyal Tressym friend, will appear in all versions of the epilogue. Furthermore, she’ll have varying commentary depending on how Gale’s story went. If he’s a god she’ll express displeasure. If Gale is still human, Tara will request that you visit the two of them at the school Gale teaches at.
Milil is the bard providing entertainment at the party. While he’ll spend most of his time up on top of the central stone pillar, and you’ll have to jump up to speak with him. You can make requests for certain types of songs, if you wish. Moreover, if you pass an 18 DC Perception Check then you’ll discover that he was formerly a minor deity of song. After getting kicked out of the pantheon, Withers has brought him back to Faerun the play for the party.
Happy Hoarson is halfling who can be brought to the party by Minsc, if he has resolved his conflict with Nine-Fingers Keane. Happy was caught by Minsc trying to steal from the battle site after the fight with Absolute. Now Minsc is trying to reform the unfortunate soul, mostly using scare tactics.
Tips & Tricks for Epilogue in BG3
By the time you reach the Epilogue in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will have already made all of the major decisions that can influence the outcome. Most other alternatives will be hard to see for yourself without playing through the game again. And we certainly recommend that with a game as varied as BG3!
However, if you make sure to save before some of the major choices just before the very end, you can see at least a few major changes. You’ll still have to play through at least some of Act 3 and conquer the final fight again. One major point provides a great junction for this: the choice between the Emperor and Orpheus. There are several choices made here:
- Side with the Emperor
- Side with Orpheus
- Choose to become an Illithid
- Karlach volunteers to become an Illithid (only if you side with Orpheus)
Changing up any of these choices will have consequences that will play out differently in the epilogue for Baldur’s Gate 3.
