In The First Descendant, characters are your classes, and each possesses unique skills, passives, and ultimate abilities. Additionally, the First Descendant class system is similar to games like Destiny 2 and Warframe. First, you will have three standard abilities with cooldowns based on their power. Furthermore, you can also use multiple guns and accessories to develop your build. Finally, each class has its pros and cons and optimal usage. In this First Descendant guide, we will describe how to play the Kyle character, how to unlock him, and who would enjoy this class playstyle.

Should you play Kyle in The First Descendant?

If you’re interested in playing Kyle, you are likely already drawn to the tank/support playstyle. Although Kyle is the best tank in the game, he is not a character who will be available to you at the start. Unless you pay a premium currency to unlock him, you will first have to collect many materials to craft him. Therefore, if you’re looking to play as a tank in The First Descendant, we recommend picking the starting character Ajax to begin with. Ajax is more of a mix of damage and tank, but he’ll give you a good introduction to the game’s mechanics, and you can use him to farm the pieces required for Kyle.

Who is Kyle? – Story

Kyle served as the Construction Corps Captain. He headed the Spectral Digger project in the Agna Desert and oversaw the construction of several outposts throughout Ingris. The Spectral Digger was installed to extract Kuiper, a vital resource. However, the harsh conditions in the Agna Desert made construction difficult for the workers. Afterward, the Legion of Darkness attacked the workers who were celebrating returning home after completing the Digger.

Kyle watched as bullets tore through his friends, but when he closed his eyes, expecting them to kill him next, nothing happened. He opened his eyes to find bullets at his feet and knew his Arche had unleashed. However, Kyle was so devastated that it did not come in time to save his friends that he left the Corps entirely, hiding his power.

Sometime afterward, he learned that the Spectral Digger had fallen into the hands of the Vulgus. Infuriated on behalf of his fallen comrades, he revealed everything to HQ and vowed to use his new powers to take back the Digger so their lives would not be in vain.

How to Play Kyle – Character Gameplay

When playing as Kyle in The First Descendant, you’ll be expected to be on the frontlines of combat, using your skills to knockback enemies and to be a shield between your teammates and enemy fire. You will need to have a high level of situational awareness of the entire field of battle, particularly when multiple enemies are on the field. Additionally, you’ll need to weave in some of your damage-dealing abilities to help complete the mission.

Area Damage and Single-Target Damage: While the core of Kyle’s abilities are focused on defense, some also create conditions that will cause area-of-effect damage to enemies. You can use these at strategic points or moments to finish off a group of low-health targets and add to the overall group DPS.

Movement and Speed: Kyle, a heavily armored tank character, is one of the slower characters in The First Descendant. However, you can get a bit of extra mobility from his ultimate Superconductivity Thrusters, which boosts him into the air and allows him to fly for a limited time.

Bosses and Ultimates: Kyle does not have any aggro abilities that can pull a boss to him or make a boss focus solely on the tank. Therefore, your focus during single-target fights will still be much the same. Creating Barriers, protecting your teammates, and weaving in DPS abilities.

Defenses and Survival Tips: As a bruiser/tank, Kyle is purposefully built for defense and survivability! Nearly all of his abilities give you some defensive boost or a bit of crowd control.

Kyle Passive and Active Skills

In the First Descendant, all characters have one passive skill, three active skills and an ultimate to choose from. When you play as the Kyle character in the First Descendant, you’ll need to be familiar with the basics of his class and available skills.

  • Passive skills: Your passive buffs and bonuses are automatically applied or under certain conditions.
  • Active and Ultimate skills: These are activated by a player (effects on demand) and vary by character. Each character has unique skills to match their role and playstyle.

Passive Skill

Experienced Technician – Increases max Magnetic Force proportional to Max Energy Shield. When Kyle’s Energy Shield is depleted, gains Magnetic Care. Magnetic Care recovers Energy Shield and Magnetic Force at fixed intervals. This effect gains cooldown. When out of combat, Magnetic Force is consumed at fixed intervals.

  • Usage – This passive rewards you for having a larger shield and, therefore, powering your abilities. Additionally, you gain shield and force when the shield is depleted, giving you better survivability.

Active Skills

Repulsion Dash – Charges forward to inflict damage and Knockback on the colliding enemy. Recovers Magnetic Force proportional to Max Energy Shield upon dealing damage to an enemy. When the skill ends, grants self DEF+ for a certain period of time.

  • Usage – your gap closer skill that boosts defense after hitting a target. In the First Descendant, when you play as Kyle, use this skill in combination with Magnetism Spurt to explode damage around you.

Magnetic Bulwark – Creates a Barrier in front that blocks enemy projectiles. When the Barrier is hit, recovers Magnetic Force proportional to the enemy’s DMG Received.

  • Usage – use this barrier to create a layer of protection for you and allies. You also want to put the barrier in areas where it’s likely to soak up damage so you recover your resources.

Magnetism Spurt – After using Magnetism Spurt, Magnetic Force is consumed first before Energy Shield or HP when hit by an enemy. When Magnetic Force is completely depleted, deals damage to enemies within range. This damage increases by the total Magnetic Force consumed while Magnetism Spurt was active.

Pressing the skill button one more time ends the skill. When the skill ends, Kyle recovers the Energy Shield of nearby allies proportionally to his Max Energy Shield.

  • Usage – you can use this ability when in trouble and needing to survive a bit longer or offensively. Offensively, you activate the skill charge into combat to soak up damage and explode AOE damage.

Ultimate Skill

Superconductivity Thrusters – Superconductivity Thrusters enable you to fly in the air for a certain period of time. On collision with an enemy, damage is inflicted. When the skill ends, Magnetic Force is completely consumed, and the damage increases proportionally based on Magnetic Force stats.

  • Usage – you want to fly around and hit as many enemies as possible to increase the force damage at the end of the explosion.
