The Best Build in Hogwarts Legacy the Herbologist Build Basics

In Hogwarts Legacy, plants and potions are extraordinarily strong, providing some of the best damage in the game and 100% damage reduction. Moreover, this build has completed all the Arenas in the game on the hardest difficulty.  Whether you’re a role player who loves Professor Garlick or are looking for something simple and effective, this build is for you!  Below, we will explain some basics about builds in Hogwarts Legacy and how to put it all together depending on your level and progress in the game.

The following list presents all the essential Dark Arts Build Features and Mechanics in Hogwarts Legacy:

Builds in Hogwarts Legacy follow a general formula to get more powerful: Spells, Consumables (Potions/Plants), Armor, Armor Traits, and Talents.  Below, we will detail various parts of your build and why they are essential.

Best House for the Herbologist Build

Houses are primarily relevant for the story and role play. Consider picking a house, wand, or playstyle that fits your character’s story. This will not increase or decrease the performance of your build.

Spell Combinations Explained

The Herbologist Skill Bar

Glacius acts as a massive damage amplifier, and cast with Diffindo; you’ll get the most single-target damage in the game. You can take both spell masters later in the game and make it even nastier of a combination.

Levioso acts as a crowd control mechanism and a shield breaker, while Descendo slams down targets and breaks shields. Take the master talents to make this AoE and do damage as a great form of crowd control.

Important Talents Explained

Hogwarts Legacy Talent Fertiliser
  • Fertiliser talent (required level 5) – for each Chinese Chomping Cabbage thrown, a second chomping cabbage is generated and released at no cost.
    • Why? It allows for twice the effectiveness of the cabbage doing damage, which is unreal damage.
  • Edurus Potion Potency talent (required level 5) – Edurus Potion makes you invulnerable and deflects projectile attacks back to enemies.
    • Why? It makes you invoiceable for 20 seconds.
  • Noxious talent (required level 22)– venomous tentacula attacks deal additional damage and break shields.
    • Why? It does require quick reflexes or spell swapping to break enemy shields.
  • Swift talent (required level 5)– Holding down dodge allows you to vanish quickly and reappear nearby.
    • Why? It allows great mobility in the game, plus you can rely on dodge vs having super high reflexes with Protego on the highest difficulty.
  • Evasion Absorption (required level 16)– successfully evading an unlockable attack with dodge contributes to the ancient magic meter).
    • Why? Again, optimizing for massive dodge rolls with no stamina for best defensive vs high reflexes.

Leveling Progression for The Hogwarts Legacy the Herbologist Build

The following list includes all talents and levels for The Hogwarts Legacy Herbologist Build. Remember that you may not have all the spells at the listed level, so be flexible with your selection. This level selection will optimize the type of build we are going for, but feel free to swap around as you see fit.

Consumables Explained

Chinese Chomping Cabbage
  • Chinese Chomping Cabbage = is the best damage-producing plant in the game, which will rip through targets like butter. Take the talent to get 2x the damage and effect.  You can get these at the start of the game and focus on the room of requirement and herbology for endless materials.
  • Venomous Tentacula = is a really good single-target damage dealer that is even better later in the game.  Take the talent that breaks shields and throw both Cabbage and Tentacula to chew through any enemy in the game.
  • Edurus Potion = is the single best damage reduction item in the game.  With a level 5 perk, you will not die for 20 seconds.  Pop, throw plants, sit back, and watch everything melt!

Armor Traits Explained

Herbology Trait Hogwarts Legacy

An important thing to note about Armor traits is that they are multiplicative. This means they get stronger the more you equip your armor.  You have 6 slots and generally want all 6 to be uniform for maximum results. So don’t be shy in stacking the same one, assuming you have the material.  Hogwsmead Brood and Peck has materials for sale if your beast taming isn’t up to a high enough level.

  • Herbology significantly increased damage by all plants = this is ideal if you plan on using a variety of plants over just the cabbage.  Since we are herbologists, we love all plants!
  • Fangs increased chinses chomping cabbages damage = ideal trait if you want to focus on cabbage damage.
  • Venom significantly increased venomous Tentacula damage = great alternative if you like single target pressure or shield break option.

Combat & Rotation

Now that you have a general idea of the build, it will look like this.

  1. Drink an Edurus potion so you become invincible at the start of the fight.
  2. Throw cabbage and Tentcula, and throw multiple if in a really hard fight.
  3. Use your combination of single target and area damage on mobs at range while your plants do the rest
  4. At the 20-second mark, decide to drink another potion or finish the remaining targets
  5. When in critically low health, constantly dodge and hold to create space, then drink a healing potion

Rinse and repeat!
