The Best Build in Hogwarts Legacy the Herbologist Build Basics

  • Preferred House: Hufflepuff
  • Spell Combinations: Glacius + Diffindo and Levioso + Descendo
  • Important Talents: Fertiliser, Edurus Potion Potency, Noxious, Swift, Evasion Absorption
  • Key Consumables: Chinese Chomping Cabbage, Venomous Tentacula, Edurus Potion
  • Optimal Armor Traits: 1st Herbology III (use I or II if needed), 2nd Fangs III, 3rd Venom III

Builds in Hogwarts Legacy follow a general formula to get more powerful: Spells, Consumables (Potions/Plants), Armor, Armor Traits and Talents.  Below we will go into detail about various parts of your build and why they are important.

Best House for the Herbologist Build

Houses are primarily relevant for the story and role play. Consider picking a house, wand and or a playstyle that fits the story of your character. This will not increase or decrease the performance of your build.

If you want to know how House and Wand influence a Hogwarts Legacy gameplay, consider checking out:

  • Which house should I choose? Guide
  • How to pick a Wand? Guide

How do Armor Traits Work?

  • Armor traits are unlocked after a specific main story quest (The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and the Loom).  This can be anywhere from level 15-25 depending on how much focus you give the main story.  Once unlocked, you will have access to a loom where you can change traits at the cost of beast materials.  Beast can be unlocked, captured in the wild and brought back to your room of requirement for harvesting materials needed for traits.

Next, you will need to find bandit camps and clear the enemies and loot a chest.  This will give you random trait from ones you don’t have.  You can save just before opening and load for the desired trait.  And then just use this method or roam multiple bandit camps along with collections through story activities.

How do Talent Work?

Talents give a permanent bonus to your character and cannot be changed.  These are also unlocked also through a main story quest around level 10 (Jackdaws Rest Quest).  Your character will start earning one talent point at level 5 all the way up to level 40.

What’s Max Level?

The max level in Hogwarts Legacy is 40.  It takes a very long time to reach max level.  Also, consider that you can complete the main story and still progress your character. In fact, you’ll want to progress and or finish most of the main story because it will unlock the critical systems needed to maximize your build.

Spell Combinations Explained

The Herbologist Skill Bar

Glacius acts as a massive damage amplifier and casted with Diffindo you’ll get the most single target damage in the game. You can take both spell master later in the game and make it even nastier of a combination.

Levioso acts as a crowd control mechanism and a shield breaker while Descendo slams down targets and also breaks shields. Take the master talents to make this AoE and do damage as a great form of crowd control.

Important Talents Explained

Hogwarts Legacy Talent Fertiliser
Hogwarts Legacy Talent Fertiliser
  • Fertiliser talent (required level 5) – for each chinese chomping cabbage thrown, a second chomping cabbage is generated and release at no cost.
    • Why? Allows for twice the effectiveness of the cabbage doing damage which is unreal damage.
  • Edurus Potion Potency talent (required level 5) – Edurus Potion makes you invulnerable and deflects projectile attacks back to enemies.
    • Why? makes you invoiceable for 20 seconds.
  • Noxious talent (required level 22)– venmous tentacula attacks deal additional damage and break shields.
    • Why? Does require quick reflects or spell swapping to break enemy shields.
  • Swift talent (required level 5)– Holding down dodge allows you to vanish quickly and reappear nearby.
    • Why? allows the great mobility in the game, plus you can relay on dodge vs having super high reflexs with Protego on the highest difficulty.
  • Evasion Absorption (required level 16)– successfully evading an unlockable attack with dodge contributes to the ancient magic meter).
    • Why? again, optimizing for massive dodge rolls with no stamina for best defensive vs high reflexes.

Talents & Levels to take them. Keep in mind, you may not have all the spells at listed level so be flexible with your selection.  This level selection will optimize the type of build we are going for, but feel free to swap around as you see fit.

  • Talents Level 5: Fertiliser (Room of Requirement)
  • Talents Level 6: Edurus Potion Potency (Room of Requirement)
  • Talents Level 7: Swift (Core)
  • Talents Level 8: Wiggenweld Potency I (Core)
  • Talents Level 9: Incendio Mastery (Spell)
  • Talents Level 10: Accio Mastery (Spell)

  • Talents Level 25-40: fill in the gaps for spells, consumables and core combat that you use.

Consumables Explained

Chinese Chomping Cabbage

  • Chinese Chomping Cabbage = the best damage producing plant in the game which will rip through targets like butter. Take the talent to get 2x the damage and effect.  You can get these at the start of the game and focus on the room of requirement and herbology for endless materials.
  • Venomous Tentacula = a really good single target damage dealer that, later on in the game is even better.  Take the talent that breaks shields and throw both Cabbage and Tentacula to chew through any enemy in the game.
  • Edurus Potion = the single best damage reduction item in the game.  With a level 5 perk, you will not die for 20 seconds.  Pop, throw plants sit back and watch everything melt!

Armor Traits Explained

Herbology Trait Hogwarts Legacy

An important thing to note about Armor traits is the traits are multiplicative. Meaning, they get strong the more you equip on your armor.  You have 6 slots in total and generally want all 6 to be uniform for maximum results. So don’t be shy in stacking the same one, assuming you have the material.  Hogwsmead Brood and Peck has materials for sale if your beast taming isn’t up to high enough level.

  • Herbology significantly increased damage by all plants = this is ideal if you plan on using a variety of plants over just the cabbage.  Since we are the herbologist, we love all plants!
  • Fangs increased chinses chomping cabbages damage = ideal trait if you want to just focus on cabbage damage.
  • Venom significantly increased venomous Tentacula damage = great alternative if you like more single target pressure or shield break option.

Combat & Rotation

Now that you have the general idea of the build it will look like this.

  1. Drink a Edurus potion so you become invinicible at the start of the fight.
  2. Throw cabbage and Tentcula, throw multiple if in a really hard fight.
  3. Use your combination single target and area damage on mobs at range while your plants do the rest
  4. At the 20 second mark, decide to drink another potion or finish of the remaining targets
  5. When in critically low health constantly dodge and hold to create space then drink healing potion

Rinse and repeat!
