Best Avowed Weapon Tier List That You Must Know

In Avowed, choosing the right weapon can make all the difference in how you approach combat. Whether you’re slashing through enemies with a sword, casting spells with a wand, or striking with precision using a bow. With a wide variety of weapons available, it can be overwhelming to determine which ones are truly worth your time and resources. That’s where our Best Avowed Weapon Tier List comes in. In this guide, we’ll rank the top weapon types in the game, breaking down their strengths, weaknesses, and ideal uses to help you make the best choices for your play style.

Weapons Overview in Avowed

Although it is viable to go Unarmed while playing Avowed, the overwhelming majority will want to equip some of the fantastic weapons that can be discovered in the Living Lands. Unique-named weapons come with special enchantments, which provide special passive bonuses when you equip them. Additionally, the primary enchantment can also be enhanced and the weapons themselves can be upgraded. Consequently, even a special sword you found in the first region of Dawnshore can remain viable at end game.

In Avowed, weapons play a crucial role in shaping your combat experience and understanding the variety of weapons available is essential to mastering the game. Moreover, you can equip up to two different weapon sets, and switch between them with a press of a button. Therefore, opening up additional possibilities and flexible playstyles. Whether you prefer close-range combat, ranged attacks, or spellcasting, the right weapon can dramatically enhance your effectiveness in battle.

Best Weapons Tier List in Avowed

The Grimoire is the best weapon type in the game because using it gives you access to the most powerful abilities in the game, including many elemental spells. Often, these spells can be used to clear a path in exploration, as well. The bow is the best ranged weapon, especially if you boost your stealth damage for sniper kills. Greatsword is the best melee because the damage over time from Bleed Accumulation is so strong. Finally, a shield in your off-hand is great for a defensive playstyle, and can also be used offensively if you unlock Shield Bash.

Grimoire

Grimoire is the best weapon in Avowed because it gives you access to the most powerful skills and spells in the game. All other weapons don’t unlock skills directly, but get their boosts from passives. The grimore is the exception, with lots of spells to choose from. Additionally, the elemental spells can also help you while exploring. Furthermore, you can invest in grimoire mastery to get access to better spells and lower cost. Also, blood magic can help if you struggle with resources essence. Overall, it’s best to invest heavily into one element because you have limited passives. We also recommend pairing the grimoire with a wand or any other mainhand weapon. The main downside to a grimoire is that is an off-hand weapon and you can’t pair it with a shield.

Bow

The bow is one of two weapons that gain sneak attack damage via the Sniper passive. Moreover, you can stack weakpoint damage on top of it, thus giving incredible burst at a fair range. Perception is the attribute stat you want to build into to further increase your range. Within the Ranger tree, you’ll use skills like Marksmanship to boost damage, and Critical Strike to increase your burst. The downside of the bow is that it’s purely single target and requires two hands. However, it’s OP at the beginning of the game hitting the hardest when you have zero passives to boost damage. At end game, many unique bonuses also become available making it a strong ranged weapon for single-target kills.

Shield

Putting a shield in your off-hand gives you the best defensive playstyle where you can use it to block, parry, deflect, and protect. Early on unlocking the Shield Bash passive is super helpful to interrupt enemies and build stun. Furthermore, passives like Parry and Reflect give you great survivability. Therefore, it’s one of the best combos to use on your back bar even if you don’t intend to play a tanky style. Additionally, with two weapons equipped you get more passive bonuses than a single two-handed weapon. The downside to a shield is that it requires a ton of passive skills to make the defensiveness worth it and little offensive upside.

Greatsword

The greatsword has low stun, but it still makes it to the S-tier because the Bleed Accumulation it causes is just that powerful. You’ll need to unlock the Bleeding Cuts passive in the Fighter skill tree before this applies, however. Bleed deals a lot of damage over time, just melting targets after a power attack. Moreover, you can stack elemental effects with grenades like fire and get multiple damage over time effects. Then at end game, you can bring along Yatzli and she gives frost and shock debuffs, which you stack up to four at a time destroying enemies.

Wand

The Wand makes it to the A-tier in our best Avowed weapons list because it makes a fantastic combo weapon with the grimoire. Moreover, it’s a good range weapon that has many passives to boost damage in the Wizard tree. The Bounce passive is super helpful because you can hit additional enemies, making it a good AOE weapon. However, the wand’s range is less than the bow. Additionally, the damage is less and requires a ton of skill points to increase. Therefore, it ranks below the bow, but the wand is still great overall for AOE damage at range.

Axe

While it may seem more intuitive to pick up a one-handed sword for a traditional sword and shield combo, the axe is actually a better main-hand weapon in Avowed. Axes not only deal higher damage but also have a better Stun statistic and Critical Hit percentage. And all of that comes at only a marginally higher stamina cost for your basic attacks.

Pistol

Pistols a great ranged weapon in Avowed because you can dual wield them, and they have quick reload. Moreover, you can stack double set bonuses. The downside to that is that you will need twice the amount of materials to continue upgrading these weapons. To further increase your skill, look to unlock the Steady Aim passive, which slows time while aiming, and Marksmanship to boost damage.

What holds the pistols back is the shorter range and lack of aiming downsights like the bow. While similar in passives, the bow just has more one-shot potential and further range.

Sword

Although Axes are more powerful and have better stun, swords also make it into the A-tier spot because there are more unique options and better variety on their enchantment passives. The Last Light of Day, for example, is a great early-game sword that has a powerful survivability passive if you are struggling to stay alive. In the third region of Shatterscarp, The Emperor’s Reach can be found at the Ancient Lakebed and its primary passive will boost your attack damage and speed on every enemy kill.

Dagger

Daggers in Avowed are essentially off-hand weapons that you reserve for critical strikes from stealth. They have low damage and stun, which make them very ineffective to use as your main weapons in full melee combat. However, their bonus to critical hit chance makes them very useful when you’re executing stealth attacks using your Divine Thorn godlike ability. Combine this with the Shadowing Beyond ability from the Ranger skill tree, and you can go invisible and trigger that high damage more than once in a single fight.

Unarmed

Attacking your enemies with your bare hands is a fun option in Avowed that is viable because of the Iron Fists passive in the Fighter skill tree. You’ll have to commit fully to it and keep putting skill points in to ‘upgrade’ your fists. Otherwise, your damage will become less and less viable. The great benefit to going Unarmed in Avowed is that you will save a ton of crafting materials because you don’t have to upgrade your weapons. However, the corresponding downside is that you will miss out on a lot of fantastic enchantment passives that come with the unique weapons.

Great Hammer

Great Hammers are powerful two-handed weapons in Avowed, and can deal high damage and high stun. However, their attack speed is correspondingly slow and there is a high stamina cost to use them. When you’re fighting in fast-paced battles, missing an attack swing from one can be costly. They are decently effective in the early game or when playing at low difficulties they are more rewarding. But if you’re trying to complete the Path of the Damned achievement, then you won’t want to have one of these equipped.

Spear

Spears are one-handed weapons in Avowed, that will give you the widest range of attack compared to others of the same type. This can be helpful if you like to keep a bit of space between you and your enemy. Moreover, the damage and stun statistics are similar to what you would find on an axe weapon. However, what drops spears down in our tier list is that there are so few unique options. Giant’s Slumber is the first one you can find in-game, and won’t be found until you are likely deep within the second region of Emerald Stair.

Mace

If you look at the stats, you’ll find that as a one-handed weapon, maces actually have a higher damage and stun than axes. However, this comes at the cost of a slower attack speed. Again, at lower difficulty levels this may be fine. But in challenging combat, you will feel how the slower speed cripples you. Additionally, like the spear, there are few unique options available. There is a powerful one called Star of Unbeing that has nice passives, but you won’t find it until reaching Naku Kubel in Shatterscarp.

Great Axe

The great axe is probably the least desirable two-handed melee weapon in Avowed because it’s slow, costs a lot of Stamina to use, and ultimately deals less damage than even a great hammer. Based on stats alone there is really no reason to equip a great axe at all. If you are really determined to use one, there is a unique great axe called the Seven Strivings which you can find in the starting region of Dawnshore. Its enchantment will boost your movement speed on an enemy kill, but this is not likely to overcome the deficits of this weapon type.

Arquebus

The Arquebus takes player skill to master because to get the most out of this weapon you need to be consistently hitting your enemy’s weak spot. With a high critical chance, an arquebus can make a decent sniping weapon. However, Avowed is full of group fights against multiple enemies and this skill becomes useless after the first shot. Moreover, the arquebus has a terribly slow reloading speed which will make it frustrating to get a second shot off, anyway.
