Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Missing Missive Main Quest Walkthrough

Complete the Missing Missive quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows by finding the messenger and defeating Gennojo.

The Missing Missive quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows begins directly after The Bad Brother. The mission can be completed by choosing either Naoe or Yasuke, with the outcome being the same regardless of your choice. Missing Missive starts with your character tracking down Ise Sadatame’s missing messenger to retrieve Sadoki’s reply. The mission is part of the main Onryo storyline to assassinate The Fool. It also introduces Gennojo, a recruitable and romanceable companion who is responsible for the missing letter.

Missing Missive: Where Can You Find the Messenger in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

The messenger in Missing Missive is located directly west of Kyoto. Follow the river north until you encounter a bridge just short of Tenryuji Temple. The messenger stands at the center of the bridge, but he has lost the letter from Sadoki. When you speak with him, he claims that the letter was taken by an Oni.

The messenger asks you to follow the path behind the temple into the Bamboo Grove to find the Oni. Open the map, and venture northwest of Tenryuji Temple to search the marked area. Once inside the search area, use the observation tool to mark the location of the “Oni,” Gennojo.

Fight Gennojo

To progress further, you will have to fight Gennojo and bring his health to a critical level. Sneak up on Gennojo and perform a stealth attack on him to drain nearly half his health before the fight even begins. When you defeat Gennojo, he reveals that he has a grudge against Sadoki and is willing to help you. If you choose to play as Naoe, he hits on her after the fight.

Decode the Letter

Before disappearing, Gennojo will hand over Sadoki’s message, but it is encoded. Take the letter to the messenger standing nearby to decode it. The messenger will read it out loud, revealing that Sadoki has refused Sadatame’s help, claiming that he has already won. With that, you complete the Missing Missive quest and earn 1,000 XP. To recruit Gennojo, you will have to complete several quests, beginning with Lost Honor. Following Missing Missive, The Fool’s Onryo storyline continues with The Rising Tide.
