In Avowed, three different skill trees divide possible abilities and passives into three main classes: Fighter, Ranger, and Wizard. For players familiar with the RPG genre, these three archetypes will be familiar. Fighters are your frontline damage dealers, primarily wielding great two-handed weapons or a sword and shield. Rangers typically wear medium armor and excel in stealth and ranged physical combat. Finally, Wizards are spellcasters who can cast magic that does incredible amounts of damage, but at the cost of weaker physical defenses.
What makes one class better than the other in Avowed is their active abilities and passives. Best S-Tier Class in Avowed – Ranger
The Ranger is the best and strongest class in Avowed because of all of the ways it boosts the stealth damage of the Divine Thorn godlike ability you automatically have at the beginning of the game. When you combine other Ranger stealth abilities and passives, the damage you can deal becomes only more massive as the game progresses.
The best way to use stealth as a Ranger is to unlock the Shadowy Beyond skill, which consumes Essence to make you invisible. Trigger this ability before you head into a group of enemies. Identify the boss or healer as the biggest threat, get behind them, and with Divine Thorn you will take a massive amount of their health. Sometimes, you can even one-shot enemies, and this can happen as early as level 5.
Furthermore, Rangers have a passive called Sniper that you can unlock at Level 15. This will boost stealth damage against unaware enemies even higher. The final ability Flurry of Blows is a pre-buff skill that allows you to heal while dealing damage, and it’s literally the only passive healing ability in the game.
Additionally, the Bear Ally active ability summons a bear to fight with you. And with another skill point invested, it will roar and pull aggro. Thus, you can play at full range, dealing damage in safety while darting in for stealth damage after your essence restores.

Best A-Tier Class in Avowed – Wizard
The Wizard class in Avowed comes in at A-tier rank because while it can deal some incredible area-of-effect damage at end-game, these spellcasters can be pretty vulnerable. Like the typical glass-cannon archetype, Wizards can deal fantastic damage but are weak against melee attacks in their light armor.
Furthermore, the Wizard class has a secondary benefit in Avowed and that is their usefulness in exploration. Their elemental-based magics can also be cast to burn away brambles, freeze water, and electrify devices. You can do these things with grenades, as well. But using magic will save these single-use items for creating extra damage-over-time areas in combat.
Additionally, as a Wizard you will primarily be using a wand or grimoires for damage. However, you are not locked into only these weapons. If you are having trouble with survivability, you can equip a shield and wand combo for protection.
The downside with the Wizard class is that you are heavily dependent on Essence, which is the only way to cast your powerful abilities. Therefore, you’ll spend a lot of your time chugging potions or eating essence regen food to maintain your DPS. Blood Magic is a super powerful skill that can help if you’re using Giatta as a healer because it takes health for essence which keeps you casting.
Best B-Tier Class in Avowed – Fighter
Finally, the Fighter class comes in last at B-tier rank in Avowed because while it starts the game strong, you get diminishing returns on power. Over time, both Ranger and the Wizard class will become more powerful, while the Fighter just doesn’t reach the same heights.
The Fighter is a great beginner class in Avowed, with shield blocking and passives like Constant Recovery that have a strong impact on your survivability. It’s a fantastic playstyle to pick up at first, as you are learning the game mechanics and practicing combat. However, the Fighter skill tree really wants you to tank and taunt. This becomes rather pointless when you have Kai in your group or are using the Ranger’s Bear Ally.
The two-handed Fighter playstyle is the offensive version and the best use of this is a bleed build. Unlocking the Bleeding Cuts passive and using a greatsword will cause a lot of damage over time. Additionally, at level 20 you get a great AOE skill called Clear Out. However the game is 30 level max, so 2/3 of the game goes by before you get this huge damage.
Moreover, you can lean into the Shadowy Beyond skill and stealth one shooting everything with ease so it’s hard to stay as a pure Fighter. Additionally, you have to spend a TON of skill points to get power out of your weapons. This includes crit chance, crit damage, raw damage, and so on, requiring a huge investment and limiting your active skills.
Overall, the Fighter class is great for beginners, but at some point, you will likely want to spend the gold to respec your points and try the Ranger playstyle.
