Welcome to the ESO Beginner Magicka Sorcerer Build for The Elder Scrolls Online.  This build is for players that are looking to complete solo content with a well-rounded class. The ESO Beginner Magicka Sorcerer build shines in both single target and AOE attacks, and has fairly good sustain. If you are looking to play solo or are a newer player the Magicka Sorcerer is very forgiving as it has a lot of shields and heals in it’s tool kit.

If you’re looking for a group build click HERE, one bar build HERE or a PvP build HERE.  Also, consider watching me on Twitch where you can ask me questions about my current builds.

Last updated March 13th, 2023, for Update 37 and the Scribes of Fate DLC.

Should you play the ESO Beginner Magicka Sorcerer Build?

Pros

This skill setup is extremely important to start off ESO on the correct path.  At this stage, I’m assuming you’re level three and have completed the tutorial with three skill points to spend.  From here, you’ll want to slot one skill from each of your class skill lines, regardless if you use or like the skill.  Why? Because you want to reach level 50 with most of your class skill lines leveled up or at least close to max.  You only level the skill lines in your class if you have one or more skills equipped. That way you can acquire skill points and max out all the passives which make you stronger WITHOUT having to slot a skill.

Priorities:

Your priority as soon as you’ve completed the tutorial story is follows:

  • Take a boat or wayshrine to your main faction town. Daggerfall is Glenumbra zone, Daggerfall Town. Aldemri Dominion is Auridon zone, Vulkhel Guard town. Ebonheart Pact is Stonefalls zone, Davon’s Watch town.
  • Speak with all the guilds, and acquire the introduction quests for Mages, Fighters and Undaunted.
  • Now head to the main merchant area and if you have a tiny bit of gold, by three pieces of each armor type (light/tailor, medium/leatherworker and heavy/armorer).  Even if you don’t plan to use heavy, equip three, and the skill line will unlock.  Do the same for medium and light so you can progress and take important passives.
  • For magicka users, use 5 light armor, 1 medium and 1 heavy.  This way you’ll not only level your class skill lines throughout your playthrough BUT armor which is very important at end game.
  • Next, you’re going to do something similar with weapons. Magicka users, grab a destruction staff, fire and a restoration staff from the woodworker vendor.  Leave the town and kill one enemy to unlock the skill line.  Change weapons to a restoration staff, do the same and get two skill lines unlocked.  After you get a skill point, place one skill each from Resto/Destro on your bar and leave the flame staff equipped.
  • The restoration staff skill line won’t be usable, BUT you’ll level the skill line regardless.  This will be helpful if you plan on PvPing or healing at end game.  Some alternatives are dual wield for melee magicka, sword and shield for tanking at end game or any weapon you think is interesting.

Ready to Go:

From here, you’ll have a great starting point for a new character.  You can “grind” mobs and get experience points very fast BUT you’ll lack the necessary skill points so it’s somewhat pointless.  Move from zone to zone, collecting skyshards for skill points and doing random normal dungeons via the dungeon finder at level 10.  This will give you huge XP, and a skill point for each new dungeon you complete.  This is great until reaching level 50 because THEN you’ll have tons of skill points and feel very powerful without the need to back track for 8 hours.

Here’s how you can maximize your XP gains if you’re in a rush to end game.  I have a couple of different Grind Videos as well.  THIS ONE is for overland and Imperial City.  While THIS ONE is for BRP and Skyreach my preferred grinding spots.

  • 10% from Each Armor & Weapon piece (purple quality)
  • 10% ESO Plus Membership
  • 10% from Marriage (to another player and have ring of Mara equipped)
  • 10% for being in a group of two
  • 1x Drink or XP Scroll Booster
    • 50% from Psijic Ambrosia Drink or EXP Scroll
    • 100% from Aetherial Ambrosia Drink or EXP Scroll
    • 150% from Mythic Aetherial Ambrosia Drink or EXP Scroll
  • 100% ESO in game Events (Witches & New Life Festival etc.)

Skills

Level 3 Starter - Brand New Character - Fire Staff

Work towards advancing and unlocking skills.  It's especially helpful to change out skills and at least get them to the "morphed" stage. You can always change these later for a very small fee so don't worry if you make a mistake.

Summon Unstable Clannfear (Morph of Summon Unstable Familiar | Skill line: Daedric Summoning) - Thankfully Sorc gets access to some of the most powerful abilities right away this being one. Quickly take the morph that does physical damage BUT it heals you for magicka. You'll cycle through these skills but consider this a very good on because of the strong healing and decoy at the start of the game.

Crystal Fragments (Morph of Crystal Shard | Skill line: Dark Magic) - One of the most fun skills once morphed. You'll randomly get a proc when using abilities and you can fire off a harder hitting instant ability. The key is to get blood magic passive in this tree maxed so you can get healed when you frag a target.

Mages Wrath (Morph of Mages' Fury | Skill line: Storm Calling) - A very powerful execute ability that when below 20% does a lot of damage.

Force Pulse (Morph of Force shock | Skill line: Destruction Staff) - This skill we actually use as our main spammable and this morph does AoE damage. Sorc, in general doesn't do that much AoE and this will help you get through multiple mobs quickly.

Grand Healing (Skill line: Restoration Staff) - This is a good healer skill but really we are using it to unlock restoration which is very helpful upon reaching level 15. Trust me, it seems weird but it'll be helpful post 50 when you don't need to level another skill line. Alternatives are dual wield for PvE Mag DPS melee, sword and shield if you want to tank, or even two handed/bow for niche PvP builds. Either way, put another skill line here.

Energy Overload (Morph of Overload | Skill line: Storm Calling) - Aim for this ultimate first. Reason being, you want to prioritize leveling this skill line in order to get Surge morphed into critical surge. This makes the sorcerer god mod throughout the rest of the game.

Level 15 - Front Bar - Fire or Lighting

At this stage, you should have the ability to bar swap. This comes in very handy to have leveled restoration staff, because you can put healing abilities on your secondary bar and also use resto to fully charge heavy attack to get resources back.  I'll list front bar skills, but in general put armor, healing, mobility, and consuming trap from world soul magic skill line on the back bar.  You won't be getting much XP since nearly all your kills should be on the front.

Summon Twilight Matriarch (Morph of Summon Winged Twilight | Skill line: Daedric Summoning) - One of the best carry skills in the game because the healing is spectacular and the damage isn't bad as well. Another skill you'll need to level is Daedric Curse and morph into Prey if you plan on using Pets or Haunting Curse if you don't want to level pets. Every skill in this line is great!

Crystal Fragments (Morph of Crystal Shard | Skill line: Dark Magic) - I don't really move this off my front bar when leveling. Only thing I would level immediately from this line is Dark Exchange into Dark Deal which is a great PvP skill.

Lightning Flood (Morph of Lightning Splash | Skill line: Storm Calling) - A huge massive pool of lighting is perfect for AoE damage. Continue to level skills in this line swapping them in and out as you go.

Unstable Wall Of Elements (Morph of Wall of Elements | Skill line: Destruction Staff) - A great skill near the beginning or end game, this acts as a AoE spammable and a great DoT to start off combat. Your other goal is to unlock weakness to elements and morph to elemental drain which is super important for sustain solo later on.

Combat Prayer (Morph of Blessings of Protection | Skill line: Restoration Staff) - At this point, continue to level and morph skills. Combat pray is a great back bar heal/buff to you and your group and something you can aim for solo or in a group. Continue to slot a restoration staff, dual wield or whatever weapon type you plan on using at end game. If it's too difficult swap to another skill but it'll help out tremendously at end game when most of the line is maxed.

Energy Overload (Morph of Overload | Skill line: Storm Calling) - Continue to keep this on your bar in order to level the skill line up for Critical Surge. Activate it for massive damage and sustain.

End Game Level 50 - Front Bar - Fire > Lighting Staff

Now you've hit level 50.  Continue to progress the skill lines and max out important passives. I'd also work on leveling skills in your flex spot on your front bar, and just swap something in more useful when doing serious content.  Now you'll have options for front bar magicka DPS weapons.  Front Bar Weapon Style Choices:

  • Flame Staff = best overall damage and single target pressure on bosses
  • Lighting Staff = decent option on for front bar because fully charge heavy attacking gives resources
  • Dual Wield = best overall damage due to passive like twin blade and blunt  BUT lacks resource return off heavy attacks

Bound Aegis (Morph of Bound Armor | Skill line: Daedric Summoning) - Slotted for the boost to max magicka and never really activated.

Summon Twilight Matriarch (Morph of Summon Winged Twilight | Skill line: Daedric Summoning) - Damage, decoy and huge healing if you activate again.

Crystal Fragments (Morph of Crystal Shard | Skill line: Dark Magic) - High burst single target damage, but you'll want to wait for a "proc" sound and glow before firing off.

Force Pulse (Morph of Force shock | Skill line: Destruction Staff) - This is your main spammable. Force Pulse morph is decent AoE damage. Crushing Shock gives a helpful ranged interrupt.

Mages Wrath (Morph of Mages' Fury | Skill line: Storm Calling) - This execute is useful for longer duration fights and provides AoE damage on explosion. If you struggle with sustain, pick the other morph

Energy Overload (Morph of Overload | Skill line: Storm Calling) - Use as a sustain tool only and swap to back bar for huge single target nukes!

End Game Level 50 - Back Bar - Lighting Staff

This loadout assumes you have a decent hang of the combat but might need a bit more healing/survival than a group or solo master setup.  You can put a Restoration skill back here or use a one bar setup if needed.

Critical Surge (Morph of Surge | Skill line: Storm Calling) - God mode survival with a very long duration. Make sure to cast and maintain per and during fights. It'll allow you to go full offensive without a whole lot of healing.

Summon Twilight Matriarch (Morph of Summon Winged Twilight | Skill line: Daedric Summoning) - Double barred in same position for simplicity.

Hardened Ward (Morph of Conjured Ward | Skill line: Daedric Summoning) - A shield that'll make you super survivable in conjunction with Matriarch healing. Consider this a flex spot for more offensive if you have too much defensive skills. Elemental Drain is a great option here.

Haunting Curse (Morph of Daedric Curse | Skill line: Daedric Summoning) - great damage over time and pairs well with blockade. Swap morphs if you decided to use two pets.

Unstable Wall Of Elements (Morph of Wall of Elements | Skill line: Destruction Staff) - Unstable does a lot of things like massive flame AoE damage and an explosion at the end. You can recast the ability to activate this explosion for a spammable AoE ability though we have sweeps. Commonly folks will use the VMA Maelstrom staff on their back bar with infused trait and spell damage glyph because it’ll proc the extra spell damage even when you swap bars. Not to mention it’ll add more damage to your light and heavy attacks which templar already has empower. Consider this your most important back bar buff.

Greater Storm Atronach (Morph of Summon Storm Atronach | Skill line: Daedric Summoning) - One of the best ultimate abilities in the game and what you should use during boss fights. Drop it down and watch it burn down a single target mob.

Rotation

Normal rotation

The idea here is to maintain two DoTs and a buff on your back bar.  Flip to your front and do force pulse until you hear and see a crystal frags proc. Use that and go back to force pulse.  Flip to back bar to maintain DoTs, rinse and repeat.

Desktop hover over gear for set bonuses, mobile click once for set bonuses

This gear setup is designed to get you the most experience possible without dying frequently while leveling.  Use this as a template for max XP gains while leveling.

Armor of the Seducer: three trait craftable item.  Locations are Deshaan, Grahtwood, Stormhaven.

  • Why? with zero champion points or limited knowledge of the game, sustaining resources is the hardest thing to do.  Getting this early will be a big help while leveling.

Heartland Conqueror: craftable set in Blackwood, 7 traits required.  If you don’t own Blackwood, you can have someone craft or buy from traders.

  • Why? this unique set doubles weapon trait effectiveness, giving you even more benefit for using the training trait.  See flex options below if you don’t have this set.

Armor of the Trainee: obtained in the starter zones in the game from chest and enemies.  Location Bal Foyen, Betnikh, Bleakrock Isle, Khenarthi’s Roost and Stros M’Kai.

  • Why? gives set bonuses per piece and comes in training trait.

ALTERNATIVE OVERLAND SETS (these are all base game no DLC required)

  • Mother’s Sorrow: obtained in Deshaan Ebonheart Pact overland zone drops from delves, world bosses, public dungeons and dark anchors in that zone.
    • Why? Great because massive boost to critical = more damage.
  • Withered Hand: obtained in Alik’r’ Desert Daggerfall Covenant overland zone drops from delves, world bosses, public dungeons and dark anchors in that zone.
    • Why? My favorite overall magicka beginner set due to health/magicka upon killing mobs.
  • Spinner’s garments: obtained in Malabal Tor Aldemri Dominion overland zone drops from delves, world bosses, public dungeons and dark anchors in that zone.
    • Why? Great damage set due to penetration, but becomes ineffective playing in groups when tanks debuff mobs.

CLASS SPECIFIC 5PC OVERLAND

  • Soulshine: obtained in Reaper’s March drops from delves, world bosses, public dungeons and dark anchors in that zone.
    • Why? An awesome 5pc for templar who’s main spammable is a channel.
  • Necropotence: obtained in Rivensipre drops from delves, world bosses, public dungeons and dark anchors in that zone.
    • Why? This is only useful if you have a pet like a Warden, Necromancer or Sorcerer.
  • Silks of the Sun: obtained in Stonefalls Ebonheart Pact overland zone drops from delves, world bosses, public dungeons and dark anchors in that zone.
    • Why? Perfect for a Dragonknight!
  • War Maiden: obtained in Morrowind (now free) overland zone drops from delves, world bosses, public dungeons and dark anchors in that zone. This is great for Nightblade, Templar and Warden.

ALTERNATIVE CRAFTING BASE GAME

  • Vampire’s Kiss: five trait craftable item. Locations are Alik’r Desert, Eastmarch, Malabal Tor.
    • Why? This is base game and gives great healing received upon kill.
  • Hunding’s Rage: six trait craftable item set.  Locations Bangkorai, Reaper’s March, The Rift.
    • Why? The 3rd item isn’t great for magicka but the five piece is awesome if you can’t craft Law of Julianos.
  • Kagrenac’s Hope: eight trait craftable item set.  Locations The Earth Forge which is inside Fighters Guild (AD = Reapers March – Rawl’kha // EP = The Rift – Riften // DC = Bangkorai – Evermore).
    • Why? It’s close to Hunding’s but has resurrection bonus as well.
  • Ashen Grip: two trait craftable item set.  Locations Auridon, Glenumbra, Stonefalls.
    • Why? Great AoE damage IF playing a melee build. Also a great PvP set.
  • Magnus’ Gift: four trait craftable item set. Locations Greenshade, Rivenspire and Shadowfen.
    • Why? Another great sustain set you can pair with Seducers for crazy sustain.
  • Night Mother’s Gaze: six trait craftable item set.  Locations Bangkorai, Reaper’s March, The Rift.
    • Why? Great damage set IF your class doesn’t have major breach through a skill.
  • Oblivion’s Foe: eight trait craftable item set found in Coldharbour.
    • Why? Top notch proc set damage and one of the best in late game PvP to this day.  Must use soul trap skill from world skill line.

The premise in ESO is base game overland is the easiest gear to obtained.  Because at any level, you can go to zone and farm it.  Crafting is second as it takes time to unlock traits and my require DLC.  Dungeons, on normal are third because it takes certain level requirements or DLC to access so that will be the priority of gear in general.  Your priority after obtaining the below gear sets is as follows:

  • Start doing undaunted pledges and obtain a base game damage monster helm.  My two favorite are Nerien’eth from Crypt of Hearts for damage or Ice Heart from Direfrost Keep for survival.
  • Next target is to remove Withered Hand with a higher producing damage set. I suggest checking out the builds page for more suggestions.
  • Now start working on obtaining dungeons, trials, and mythics for more damage sets.

Mother’s Sorrow: obtained in Deshaan Ebonheart Pact overland zone drops from delves, world bosses, public dungeons and dark anchors in that zone.

  • Why? Great because massive boost to critical = more damage.

Withered Hand: obtained in Alik’r’ Desert Daggerfall Covenant overland zone drops from delves, world bosses, public dungeons and dark anchors in that zone.

  • Why? My favorite overall magicka beginner set due to health/magicka.

Willpower: obtained via Imperial City, dungeon finder and very cheap on guild traders.

  • Why? great base game two piece se that gives huge stat bonuses.

ARENA WEAPON PROGRESSION

Perfected Crushing Wall: from Veteran Maelstrom Arena in Orsinium.

  • WHY? Increase your overall DPS massively due to wall of elements and light attack damage increase.

MONSTER HELM PROGRESSION

  1. Zaan’s = consider the best overall monster helm for DPS perfect for melee builds.
  2. Nerien’eth =  great damage and easy to proc perfect for range builds.
  3. Stormfist = always works, easy to obtain and AoE DPS set.
  4. Iceheart = great for pure survivability.

PROGRESSION 5pc SETS OPTIONS

  1. Pillar of Nirn = best overall damage set for front bar
  2. Medusa = great damage set with always on minor force
  3. Deadly Strike = for DoT builds like Templar and Dragonknight
  4. Scathing Mage = spell damage dungeon set
  5. War Maiden = overland great for non elemental users
  6. Order’s Wrath = best craftable option

MYTHIC PROGRESSION

  1. Pale Order = best heals per second solo in the game
  2. Oakensoul= the best one bar build for DPS – 5 Leads are here
  3. Death Dealer’s Fete = high max stats and requires no effect but in combat

Consumables

Crown Refreshing Drink

Type: Foods

FREE OPTION: these come from daily reward logins and are great starting out because you can get at level 1, carries your sustain. I wouldn't recommend buying these, but if you get for free use this or the Crown Fortifying Meal.

Witchmother's Brew

Type: Foods

CHEAP: this is another level 1 drink you can get BUT you can also buy from traders or someone can give to you. I'd highly recommend saving up and getting some from the traders, Deshaan is typically the hub in ESO. Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours. Ingredients Nightshade, Bervez Juice, Rice, Small Game

Chicken Breast

Type: Foods

VENDOR: this is a level one option you can buy from the provisioning vendor and or you can learn receipe and make at low level. It gives a buff to health, but it's better than nothing starting out.

Essence of Spell Power

Type: Potions

BEST: These potions can be bought from traders or you can get PvP ones via Cyrodiil Vendor. They are best because they giving you important buffs for which you don't need to slot an ability or use level Fighters Guild or Mages Guild.
