Hogwarts Legacy: The Best Potions Ranked

Give your magic a powerful boost and discover the best 5 potions in Hogwarts Legacy: The Best Potions Ranked!

Hogwarts Legacy Potions

Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player, action RPG based on the magical world of Harry Potter. Just like in the Harry Potter series, in Hogwarts Legacy players will learn the subtle skill of crafting powerful elixirs in their Potions classes. You’ll need to learn the recipes and collect the necessary ingredients to create any of the available potions in the game. If you have the extra galleons, both potions, and their recipes can be purchased at J. Pippin’s Potions in the town of Hogsmeade. In this article, Hogwarts Legacy: The Best Potions Ranked, we will list our favorite and most powerful potions and explain how to use them.

What Are the Best Potions in Hogwarts Legacy

The best potions in Hogwarts Legacy are Edurus, Invisibility, and Thunderbrew. With Edurus, you gain resistance to damage. Using the Invisibility potion means enemies cannot see you. Finally, drinking the Thunderbrew potion will cause massive area damage. Keep in mind that in Hogwarts Legacy, while you may be only able to drink one potion at a time, you can drink potions one right after the other. The effects will stack for at least as long as the shortest potion duration. They will fall off one by one but can be consumed again at any time. Doing so can make you super powerful, but you can burn through an awful lot of potions this way, so plan appropriately!

Here are the best potions in Hogwarts Legacy:

  1. Edurus Potion: Increased defense
  2. Invisibility: Become Invisible
  3. Thunderbrew: Causes area damage
  4. Maxima Potion: Increased spell damage
  5. Focus Potion: Reduction in spell cooldowns

5 Focus Potion

Focus Potion Hogwarts Legacy

Focus Potion features and ingredients:

  • Effects: Reduces the drinker’s spell cooldowns
  • Duration: 15 seconds
  • Cost to Purchase Outright: 500 Galleons
  • Cost to Purchase Recipe: 1,200 Galleons
  • Ingredients to Craft: 1 Lacewing Flies, 1 Fluxweed Stem and 1 Dugbog Tongue

The Focus Potion is a great way to improve your offensive power by reducing the cooldowns on your spells. While some of the basic spells in Hogwarts Legacy can be cast repeatedly without pause, these are usually utility spells. Once you start learning combat spells, or any spell that can directly affect an enemy or NPC, spells will start to have cooldowns. Typically, the more powerful the spell, the longer the cooldown. For example, Levioso only has an 8-second cooldown. While the incredibly deadly Avada Kedavra curse has a much longer 90 second cooldown.

To be sure to get the most out of your Focus Potions, you’ll want to make sure to spend Talent Points on the Focus Potion Potency. It will take quite a bit of playing the game before you can unlock this. Focus Potion Potency is a Level 22 Room of Requirement Talent. Unlocking it means that casting spells from a spell set extends the duration of Focus Potions.

4 Maxima Potion

Maxima Potion Hogwarts Legacy

Maxima potion features and ingredients:

  • Effects: Increases the drinker’s spell damage for a limited amount of time
  • Duration: 30 seconds
  • Cost to Purchase Outright: 300 Galleons
  • Cost to Purchase Recipe: 500 Galleons
  • Ingredients to Craft: 1 Leech Juice, 1 Spider Fang

The Maxima Potion is a much more direct way to increase your direct damage to enemies. The effects of the potion apply not only to the more powerful combat spells such as Incendio, but also improve the damage of your basic casts. Additionally, what makes this potion better than the Focus Potion is the duration. 30s is quite a lot of time during a combat encounter to deal a bunch of extra damage, especially if you’re surrounded by multiple enemies. If you’ve got the extra potions, though, and want to knock your enemies flat, drink both the Maxima and Focus potions for a double punch!

Much like the Focus Potion the Maxima Potion also has its perk you can unlock in the Hogwarts Legacy Talent tree. Additionally, Maxima Potion Potency does not require as high a level as the Focus Potion. You can unlock it at Level 16 in the Room of Requirement Talent tree. Doing so means your Maxima Potions will now cause even more damage and cause all attacks to break shields.

3 Thunderbrew Potion

Hogwarts Legacy Thunderbrew Potion

Thunderbrew potion features and ingredients:

  • Effects: Creates a storm around the drinker which will stun and damage nearby enemies
  • Duration: 30 seconds
  • Cost to Purchase Outright: 1,000 Galleons
  • Cost to Purchase Recipe: 1,200 Galleons
  • Ingredients to Craft: 1 Leech Juice, 1 Shrivelfig Fruit, 1 Stench of the Dead

The Thunderbrew Potion creates an area of effect storm, which will damage and can also stun nearby enemies. This is a great potion to have on hand when you are fighting multiple enemies. You never want to be surrounded if you can help it, and a quick swallow of a Thunderbrew potion will help give you a bit of a buffer. It also lasts for 30 seconds, which should be plenty of time to help you take down a few enemies and get back in control of combat.

The Thunderbrew Potion also has its own Talent perk which can be unlocked. Like the others, you will find this one in the Room of Requirement Talent tree. It can’t be unlocked until Level 22, but once you do this it will increase the range and the damage that the Thunderbrew Potion causes.

2 Invisibility Potion

Invisibility Potion Hogwarts Legacy

Invisibility potion features and ingredients:

  • Effects: The drinker turns invisible, causing enemies to immediately lose sight of them. The drinker is then imperceptible for a period of time.
  • Duration: 4 seconds
  • Cost to Purchase Outright: 500 Galleons
  • Cost to Purchase Recipe: 800 Galleons
  • Ingredients to Craft: 1 Leaping Toadstool Caps, 1 Knotgrass Sprig and 1 Troll Bogeys

The Invisibility Potion is easy enough to understand and does exactly what it promises. It will turn you Invisible, causing enemies to immediately lose sight of you. The tricky element of the Invisibility Potion is the very short duration. If you’re seriously in trouble, then 4 seconds isn’t going to hide you long enough to fully retreat. Unless you happen to have so many that you can just drink one after the other. The better way to use this potion is strategically, and with proper timing. If you’re feeling the pressure from enemies, and quick sip of the Invisibility potion will let you catch your breath. If you can, try find a large bolder or stack of crates to hide behind to plan your next move. Or use it to even run off the last few seconds of a cooldown on one of your more powerful offensive spells.

There is a way to increase the duration of the Invisibility Potion and that is by unlocking the Invisibility Potion Potency Talent. Also located in the Room of Requirement Talent tree, you can unlock this great talent as early as level 5! This will increase the duration of the Invisibility Potion by six seconds, for a total of 10 seconds. This is why it’s one of the best Hogwarts Legacy The Best Potions Ranked.

1 Edurus Potion

Hogwarts Legacy Edurus Potion Potency

Edurus Potion features and ingredients:

  • Effects: A potion that enhances the drinker’s defense by covering them with a durable rocky skin
  • Duration: 20 seconds
  • Cost to Purchase Outright: 300 Galleons
  • Cost to Purchase Recipe: Acquired for free during the Welcome to Hogsmeade quest
  • Ingredients to Craft: 1 Ashwinder Eggs and 1 Mongrel Fur

The best potion in Hogwarts Legacy is Edurus Potion because you receive only 50% of incoming damage for 20 seconds. Learned in the game early via J. Pippin’s Potions, you can craft this in the Potions Classroom or the Room of Requirement. Don’t overlook this potion simply because it’s available so early in the game. It’s the best potion Hogwarts Legacy has to offer! For only 300 gold, you can buy this powerful potion outright and stock up for difficult battles.

What you want to do to make the Edurus Potion super powerful, however, is to unlock Edurus Potion Potency. In the Room of Requirement Talent tree, you’ll find you can unlock this with Talent Points at a mere level 5! Doing so will make you completely immune to damage for 20 seconds whenever you drink an Edurus Potion. With this Talent unlocked, and multiple Edurus potions in your inventory, you’ll be nigh unstoppable on the battlefield!
