How to Get Sword of Chaos in Baldur’s Gate 3

The Sword of Chaos is an effective two-handed greatsword you can get while facing the Murder Tribunal during Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3).

Baldur's Gate 3 Sword of Chaos

Sword of Chaos

In Baldur’s Gate 3 the Sword of Chaos is a deceptively good greatsword, especially for those playing a Fighter build. The bonuses might not seem like much on the surface. A normal +2 weapon enchantment is what helps make this a ‘Very Rare’ weapon, along with the additional Necrotic damage. However, what’s really interesting is the Chaos perk. This will grant the user a 1-6 point heal each time they hit an enemy with this weapon.

A Fighter gains both Action Surge at Level 2 and Extra Attack at Level 5. Which means that they can hit enemies multiple times per turn early on. Additionally, you could get even more hits in by having them drink a Potion of Speed. Or by having a spellcaster imbue them with Hasten.

Moreover, you can pair this sword with the Ring of Regeneration, which also provides 1-4 hit points of healing at the beginning of each turn. With these two items equipped a Fighter could gain at minimum 4 HP. But the potential maximum of these items together is very high – up to 16HP with just two attacks in a single turn. Likely the dice rolls will fall somewhere in the middle of this, but it will be enough to really add to your Fighter’s survivability.

Here are all the Sword of Chaos features in BG3:

How to Get Sword of Chaos in Baldur’s Gate 3

You can only get the Sword of Chaos in Baldur’s Gate 3 by finding the Murder Tribunal in Act 3 and choosing to fight and kill Sarevock Anchev. Discovering the Murder Tribunal is part of the quest-line you follow in order to confront Orin and gain her Netherstone. Moreover, Orin herself also drops some good loot, including Bloodthirst and Crimson Mischief.

You can start the search for Orin in one of two ways. Either defeat Gortash first and she’ll give you the location and password for the discovering the Tribunal. Or follow and complete a quest called Investigate the Murders. That quest you can start by visiting the Open Hand Temple in Rivington. The end of Investigate the Murders will provide you with the same location and password you need.

Find The Murder Tribunal

To find the Murder Tribunal you will need to use the location information you’ve gained. This will lead you to Candulhallow’s Tombstones armed with the password ‘Sicarius’. Candulhallow’s Tombstones is located to the northeast of Elfsong Tavern, and the front door can be lock picked if needed.

Head towards the back office room in order to find the secret entrance. You’ll see a ‘Butterfly on Skull’ painting hanging on the wall. Remove it to find a button underneath. Pressing it will reveal a secret door where you can use the password. Ignore the sign beyond this door and keep to the brick path on the right, which will reveal the door to the Murder Tribunal. You are now another step closer to getting the Sword of Chaos in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Murder Tribunal Antechamber

The Murder Tribunal is a smaller, self-contained area. After arriving in the antechamber you’ll be stopped by guards who ask for proof of your right to be here. Essentially, they want to see proof that you have killed. Present them with a dismembered hand you should have picked up along the way. If you can’t, they will become hostile and you’ll have to fight.

Then head on inside to the Murder Tribunal audience hall. Fans of previous entries in the Baldur’s Gate series will meet a familiar face. You’ll have to make some critical story and character decisions here. Certain choices may instigate combat with members of the Tribunal. Doing so is the only way of getting the Sword of Chaos in Baldur’s Gate 3, as it is looted from his body after the fight.

Sarevok Fight Strategy

The Sarevok fight can be challenging primarily because of the assistance he has. The Echos in the room with him will keep him protected with Sanctuary and other buffs until you defeat all three. Additionally, the three Deathknights in the Antechamber will come running in to help if you did not fight them previously. Your obvious first targets should be the three Echos. Try to get at least one or two of them down before the Deathknights reach the battle.

The best way to deal with Sarevok at the beginning of the fight is to simply keep him out of it. Spells like Banishment, Grovel, and Hold Person are great for making him a non-issue while you kill the Echos and more slowly deal with the Deathknights. Once the Echoes are down you will finally be able to cause him damage, but it’s still best to take down the Deathknights first.

Baldur's Gate 3 Sarevok Fight Strategy

Unlike the weaker and lower HP Echos, the Deathknights have some hefty HP and are quite tanky. With their high AC, the most effective way to deal with them is through spells. Ice Storm can proc Prone which is a nice crowd control. Disintegrate is a powerful direct hit spell that will take out a good chunk of HP. If you have a party member who can summon a Djinni or Elemental, they can be really helpful here. Melee fighters may not do as much damage, but they can incapacitate the Deathknights by hitting them with a Disarming Attack. If it’s successful, grab that weapon off the ground before they can pick it back up.

As soon as the Deathknight guards are down, you can finally focus on Sarevok. Like his guards, he has high AC but no resistances to any type of magic damage. Spells will be most powerful against him, but at this point there is no reason not to have your melee fights also strike him with everything they have.

Once Sarevok is down, you can finally loot the Sword of Chaos and Sarevok’s Horned Helmet from his fallen corpse.
