What is the Unflinching Duty in Avowed?
In Avowed, the Unflinching Duty is a unique off-hand shield that gives you a chance to avoid taking melee damage and boosts your overall Stamina. First, the Lesser Glancing Strikes enchantment bonus will give you a 5% chance to avoid melee damage. This percentage is small, but it’s a nice early-game boost that can add to your survivability.
Secondly is the Lesser Peak Conditioning enchantment bonus, which will boost your overall Stamina by 20 points. This is another nice buff and will help you take extra actions in combat, including using this shield.
Finally, only primary enchantment on weapons can be upgraded in Avowed. Therefore, you cannot upgrade the Lesser Glancing Strikes enchantment on the Unflinching Duty shield. However, you can upgrade the shield at the Workbench to higher qualities, so that the base stats increase.

How to Get Unflinching Duty in Avowed?
To get the unique Unflinching Duty shield in Avowed you need to follow the Message From Afar main story quest, reach The Strangleroot, fight the Dreamthrall bear, and then find it on the ground next to a dead soldier.
Step 1- Start the Message From Afar Quest
When you first land at the docks after the tutorial area, you will start a main quest called Message From Afar that sends you looking for the Ambassador. The soldier at the docks tells you that he and the claviger (mayor) are missing after they went to The Strangleroot. This dense forest is north of the Old Pargrun Wall.
Overall, The Strangleroot is quite far north of your starting point, but you can get there in a fairly straight direction. You can do a lot of exploring on the way, and it wouldn’t hurt to do some leveling or smaller side quests so you can pick up another ability and attribute point.
Step 2- Reach The Strangleroot
You will find a fast-travel beacon just outside the entrance to The Strangleroot. Command Kai (or use your own spell/grenade) to burn down the brambles and head inside. It will take a bit of time to wind through the forest, but keep head north. Eventually, you will find the ambassador, along with the claviger, who has been killed.
The ambassador is ranting about the massive bear nearby and will not speak to you until it is dead. Therefore, pre-buff with some food for health-regen, and get ready to fight your first major boss. The bear has some powerful swiping attacks, which you should dodge. Use Kai’s first ability to draw aggro away from you whenever you are under too much pressure.
After the bear has been killed, the ambassador will come out. Find the body of the dead soldier, and next to him, you will see the Unfliching Duty shield outlined in gold.
How to Use Unflinching Duty in Avowed?
The best way to use the unique shield Unflinching Duty in Avowed is by equipping it to a Fighter build using a one-handed weapon. Furthermore, even if your Fighter specializes in two-handed weapon combat, this shield is still useful. You could equip it as part of your second weapon set so that if you get in trouble you can switch weapons for the extra defense.
Additionally, you can do the same for a Rogue or even a Wizard in Avowed. No ‘class’ or skill tree limits the type of weapons or other equipment you can use. Therefore, even a spellcasting Wizard could equip the Unflinching Duty shield as off-hand protection on your second weapon set.
