How to Use the Master Sword in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom

If you’ve recovered the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom (see our Guide if interested), then you may be wondering how you can take full advantage of the powers that it offers. Does the weapon durability you’ve been dealing with all game also affect this legendary sword? What is the most effective way to use it?

Keep reading for those answers and more below!

How to Use the Master Sword

In Tears of the Kingdom the Master Sword is capable of one singular, powerful ability:

  • When Link has full heart health, you can hold down the R button to charge the ability. Release the button and the Sword will cast a beam projectile in whatever direction Link is facing.

You can also use the Fuse ability with the Master Sword. However, since the sword itself does not have a specific attack value assigned to it, it is highly recommended that you only Fuse it with stronger materials. A diamond Fused Master Sword, for example, would be quite powerful!

Master Sword Durability

While the Master Sword will not break like other weapons, that does not mean that it can be used indefinitely. After a certain number of hits the sword will become unusual. You will need to ‘rest’ it and make do with another weapon for a time. The exact cooldown time isn’t known, but seems to typically be around five or so minutes.
