How to Increase Weapon Durability in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Weapon Durability in Tears of the Kingdom

Welcome to our How to Increase Weapon Durability in Tears of the Kingdom article.

Weapon Durability is a returning game mechanic from 2017’s Breath of the Wild. Despite the overall positive reception of the game, many players found this mechanic frustrating and were hoping to see changes in the game’s sequel.

Despite these hopes, weapon durability does make a return in Tears of the Kingdom. However, Nintendo has modified the mechanic somewhat and a new ability can offer interesting ways in which the player can boost a weapon’s durability.

Base Weapon Durability

As Link soon learns upon returning to the surface of Hyrule, the gloom released across the world has affected all of the metallic weapons to be found. This means that Link will continually find Rusty Swords, Rusty Claymores, and the like. This affliction will render all of these basic weapons with low durability rates.

Players who are watching closely, however, may notice that the same cannot be said for the Zonai weapons found on the Sky Islands. These weapons, for whatever reason, are not affected by the gloom in the same way. So the Zonai weapons, on the whole, are typically more valuable not only for their greater durability but also higher attack power.

This will even more important to remember when it comes to increasing your weapon durability.

How to Increase Weapon Durability

The Fuse Ability is a power that Links acquires from one of the Shrines in the tutorial area on the Great Sky Island. This ability allows Link to literally fuse objects found out in the world to either his shield or sword. When Link takes the opportunity to fuse his weapon to an object, it will often boost not just the weapon’s power, but also make it more durable.

This comes in especially handy in the early game when all Link has to fight with are sticks and tree branches. Fusing even those simple weapons is an easy way to get a little more use out of something that breaks after a few hits.

But the real power strategy comes in when you start to really think about what item/weapon you can Fuse together in order to create a weapon that will be as long lasting as you can possibly make it. Based on what we know, for the most durable weapons, you’ll want to Fuse combinations following these guidelines:

Best Items for Fusing:

  • Always strive to use Zonai weapons as a base. Fusing with Rusty weapons might be okay for low level enemies, but bosses and mini-bosses need something stronger to start with
  • Fuse your Zonai weapon with items of innate high durability. These include:
    • Zonai devices (such a Construct Horns)
    • Diamonds (provides especially high durability and also boosts your attack by 20 points!)
    • Other gemstones such as Rubies and Sapphires (while not as effective as diamonds, they still add a decent amount of durability)

Gems, of course, also have a very high rupee sell value. It’s highly recommended that you stay vigilant about alerts the game gives when your weapon is damaged and about to break. If you’ve fused a weapon and a gemstone, stop using it at that point and switch out for something ‘fresh’.

Then take the almost broken weapon back to Tarrey Town. There, speak to Pelison. This Goron will be able to un-Fuse your weapon and item for a fee of 20 rupees. Giving you back your gemstone before it breaks. Thus, allowing you to use it for its durability while also still being able to sell it for rupees later!
