Avowed is a game that will often back you into a corner and force you to make tough decisions. From deciding the fate of a character to affecting how an entire city will fare, get ready to weigh the pros and cons of every move you make.

One such tough decision comes in the form of Ygwulf in Avowed. He is the assassin who kills you (before you are revived by the mysterious voice in your head). In this guide, we’ll take a look at all of the possible outcomes when you come face to face with your assassin.

How Do You Meet Ygwulf in Avowed?

As part of the main quest, you will get the opportunity to investigate your own (attempted) murder. Following the various clues will finally lead you to the Temple of Ondra in Paradis. You’ll discover that the Paradisian rebels who plotted your murder are hiding in a cistern underneath the temple. After you get down there and fight your way through the rebels, you’ll finally reach a room with Ygwulf and some of the other rebels. As soon as you enter the room, a dialog between you and the assassin will trigger.

He will confide in you that he saw you in a dream and took it as a sign from the gods to kill you. However, since the gods brought you back to life, he has realized what he did was a mistake. At this point, you have three choices in how you want to deal with Ygwulf. These are:

  • You can forgive him and let him go.
  • You can convince him to give himself up to the Steel Garrote.
  • You can kill him.

Now, let’s take a look at how each of these choices pans out.

Forgiving Ygwulf

During the dialogue, if you choose the “take your people and leave” option, the encounter will end without violence. Also, because of your kindness, Ygwulf will give an Adra and 625 coins. Later on, you’ll also receive a Passage of Writ from one of the assassin’s companions that will ensure that no rebels will attack you in the future.

However, choosing this option will displease both Ambassador Hylgard and Inquisitor Lodwyn. In case of the Ambassador, you can lie to avoid his displeasure.

Convincing Ygwulf To Give Himself Up

The second option is to convince Ygwulf in Avowed to give himself up to the Steel Garrote. Picking this option will also let you avoid combat, but you won’t get the Adra or the gold from him. Instead, you can claim 1500 coins at the Embassy and win some points in Inquisitor Lodwyn’s books.

Keep in mind, though, that from this point onward, all rebels on the street and in other areas will attack you on sight. Also, this option eventually leads to Ygwulf’s execution by the Steel Garrote. In retaliation, Garryck (one of your companions during the game’s prologue) will be killed by the rebels.

Fighting Ygwulf

The last option is outright attacking Ygwulf and his companions in the room. After a tough fight, you will be able to loot the assassin’s body and get a unique stealth-based armor called Blackwing Armor. Besides that, he will have a health potion and 48 gold on him, so you can’t loot the Adra. However, you’ll still get the 1500 gold at the embassy and win some favor with the Ambassador and Inquisitor Lodwyn.

This option also results in the rebels being hostile to you from this point on and attacking you whenever they spot you in the streets. If the fight with Ygwulf feels too challenging, try lowering the difficult settings. Explore our guide on the difficulty modes in Avowed.

So, these are the options open to you when facing off against Ygwulf in Avowed. You have to make a decision based on your preference and your play style. However, one thing’s for sure, you can’t make everyone happy regardless of your choice.
