Should You Save the Deep Gnome Thulla in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Choosing to Save the deep gnome Thulla in Baldur’s Gate 3 can lead to a larger Act 1 quest, which can have consequences in later Acts of the game.

Should You Save the Deep Gnome Thulla in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Thulla is an escaped Deep Gnome slave who has been poisoned by an Absolute cultist. She carries a pair of good boots, which are part of the Find the Missing Boots quest. However, you can gain these boots either by helping her or stealing them from her. Stealing them is arguably the more straightforward thing to do. But if you take the time to help Thulla, it can unlock a new quest, lead you toward a new massive underground area, and ultimately gain you allies in the final fight!

Consequently, this post will contain some story spoilers for Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3. It will also include additional information about how this quest can impact later Acts in the game.

Finding the Deep Gnome Thulla in Baldur’s Gate 3

BG3 Blurg Myconid Colony

In order to find Thulla you first need to discover the Underdark, which is an entirely separate region of Faerun where the Drow, Duergar, and Deep Gnomes are native inhabitants. It’s a huge, cavernous area, and deep inside, there is a small trader hub called the Myconid Colony.

If you haven’t been to the Underdark yet, the easiest entrance is probably through the Whispering Depths. In about the middle of the Blighted Village, you can find a Well. Interact with it; you only have to pass a low DC roll to discover the bottom of it. Travel down to find a cavernous area full of spiders, including a Phase Spider Matriarch boss. Find the glowing chasm, cast Feather Fall on yourself and your allies, and jump into the Underdark.

Finally, from the spot where you land in the Underdark, the Myconid Colony is just a short way to the northwest. You must pass a low 5 DC Charisma roll to get inside. There you will find Thulla up on the orangish-red mushroom platforms not far from Soverign Spaw. You’ll find her lying down, in agony from a poisoning, and can speak with her to find out why.

Baldur's Gate 3 Boots of Speed and Thulla quest

Thulla will be in agony from the poison afflicting her. If you’re running a Dark Urge or other evil playthrough, an Investigation roll when you first interact with her will give you a chance to simply steal the Boots of Speed. However, saving her will unlock a larger quest. If you agree to it, she will also give you the boots as a reward.

Here are all of the different ways you can save the deep gnome Thulla in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  1. Take the Duergar Antidote from Gekh Coal in the Decrepit Village/Beach.
    • This is the longer route that will require you to find the Duergar who poisoned Thulla. He is at the Decrepit Village on the banks of the beach, which you can find southwest of the Myconid Colony. The Antidote can be pickpocketed or looted from him after a fight.
  2. You can also use the following spells to cure Thulla:
    • Lesser Restoration (Level 3 Bard, Cleric, Druid, or Life Domain Cleric)
    • Protection from Poison (Level 3: Cleric or Druid)
    • Lay on Hands (Level 1 Paladin)

Why You Should Save Thulla and Aid the Deep Gnomes

Saving Thulla will not only reward you with a useful pair of boots but will unlock a new quest called Save the Grymforge Gnomes. This will lead you to another large underground area. There, you can find the legendary gear piece Disintegrating Night Walkers. Additionally, you’ll even be able to make the only two pieces of craftable armor in the game.

Furthermore, you’ll reencounter Barcus Wroot. Saving him a second time will mean you meet up with him again in Act 2. Moreover, following through on the quest to save the Grymforge Gnomes and Barcus will lead to additional quests in Act 3 and a chance to have them as allies in the final fight.

You’ll Find the Grymforge

BG3 How to Get to Grymforge

The most important consequence of saving Thulla is that it gives you the most direct line to finding the Grymforge. Return to the Decrepit Village, where you can fight and defeat the Duergar for free access to the boat at the docks. Moreover, doing so will fulfill Sovereign Spaw’s quest ‘Defeat the Duergar Intruders’. Or, you can speak to the Duergar and tell Gekh that you have the boots Sergeant Thrinn is looking for. He’ll grant you passage on the boat so you can return them.

The Grymforge is a large area where you will find Absolute cultists using Deep Gnomes’ slaves in an effort to find the Adamantine Forge. You can find your own way into the Forge and even collect various weapons and armor moulds along the way. You can also find two separate Mithral veins, where you can mine some of the precious metals. Consequently, although you can find up to six moulds, you can only use two of them to craft your gear.

You’ll Rescue Barcus Wroot (Again)

Barcus Wroot in Baldur's Gate 3

For Barcus Wroot to appear in the Underdark you’ll have to have previously saved him from the goblins who tied him to a windmill in the Blighted Village. He’s still looking for his friend Wulbren Bongle. However, when he finds a group of Ironhand Gnomes he was with, Wulbren is taken away by the cultists for possessing some knowledge about Runepowder that they wanted.

Barcus has also been caught and is now part of the group of deep gnome slaves trying to dig away the cave-in. You can help everyone by using a Vial of Runepowder or Smokepowder bombs to blow away the rubble. Afterwards, to save the gnomes you’ll have to fight True Soul Nere and the other cultists. Succeeding will not only free the gnomes and Barcus, but will reward you with the Disintegrating Night Walkers.

During Act 2, Barcus will show up again. This time, he asks for your help rescuing Wulbren instead of trying to do it himself. If you successfully break him out of Moonrise Towers Prison there will be more follow-up stories and quests in Act 3.

Can Lead to Deep Gnomes as Allies in Act 3

Barcus, Wulbren, and the other Ironhand Gnomes can be found at their hideout in the Rivington area during Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3. Without giving away too many spoilers, this will lead you to the group of Gondian Gnomes at the Steel Watch Foundry. These two groups are in conflict. But if you can save the Gondian gnomes and resolve their conflict, then the Deep Gnomes will be available as allies during the game’s final fight!
