In Baldur’s Gate 3, Yurgir is an Orthon fiend you’ll meet during your journey through the Shadow-Cursed Lands in Act 2, and the fight with him can seem fairly straightforward at first. Before you even enter his domain, the cambion Raphael has asked you to ‘take care of’ the beast that lurks within the Gauntlet of Shar. However, the obvious choice isn’t always the most rewarding or interesting in Baldur’s Gate 3. In this guide, we’ll go over where and how to find Yurgir, how you can choose to save him, and what the consequences of that action can be.

Therefore, this post will contain some major spoilers for Act 2, along with some smaller ones in Act 3. If you’re playing through the game for the first time, keep that in mind before reading on.

To find Yurgir in Baldur’s Gate 3 you will need to make your way through the Shadow-Cursed Lands until you come to the entrance of the Grand Mausoleum, which is north of Reithwin Town. The first time you approach you’ll be stopped by Raphael, who has supposedly come to warn you about a powerful creature of hell lurking within. As the conversation continues, Astarion will speak up and ask for a favor if he is in your active party. Raphael proposes an exchange: kill the creature, and he will give Astarion the information he wants.

Afterward, you’ll have to solve the puzzle in the Mausoleum to unlock the secret passage into the Gauntlet of Shar. Use Astarion or another party member with high Sleight of Hand to disarm all the traps in the northern room. Then, press the buttons below the paintings in this order: Moonrise Towers/Selunite painting, Grief/Funeral painting, General/Shar painting.

This will open the way into the Gauntlet of Shar. You can get past the initial entrance puzzle by having a character with Misty Step teleport over to the gem pedestal and interact with it. This will clear the way into the rest of the temple.

Finally, you can make your way to Yurgir, who is in the northeast space on the map. To reach him, head north past the entrance puzzle, and then turn right in the next chamber. You’ll have to jump down some broken stairs before you can make your way into Yurgir’s rooms.

Surprisingly, Yurgir doesn’t immediately initiate combat upon seeing you but instead reacts to the sulphur smell of Raphael on you. Keep him talking and he’ll explain that it was Raphael himself that has trapped him in the Gauntlet. Moreover, he and Raphael had their own contract agreement, in which Yurgir’s end of the bargain required him to completely clear the Gauntlet of all Dark Justiciars.

Finally, Yurgir will attempt to end the conversation by saying ‘Time to die.” However, you can use two different possible Persuasion options to achieve two different results. The first is “The lyrics are a trick.” This starts a dialogue chain where you can repeatedly convince Yurgir to kill his followers (16 DC), the displacer beast (21 DC), and then himself (21 DC). This avoids the fight entirely and will reward you with the Hellfire Hand Crossbow.

Killing Yurgir is the only way to get the Hellfire Hand Crossbow. Furthermore, killing Yurgir here does not lock you out of having him as an ally in Act 3. However, you will have to pass a very high 30 DC Persuasion dialogue check, and you will not get a helpful hint about the House of Hope. More details on that are below.

Finding the Last Dark Justiciar

The second Persuasion option will open the path to save Yurgir in Baldur’s Gate 3. Choose “There must be something you missed” and pass a 16 DC Persuasion check. Afterward, you can cast the Speak with Dead spell on Yurgir’s bed made of corpses. Ask it: What did you do in life?, What was this place for?, What happened to you?, and then finally, “Did anyone survive?

This will give you the clue you need to seek out the final Dark Justiciar. Now you can look at your map and see a search area marked. Continue through the Gauntlet of Shar until you reach an area outside of the entrance to the Silent Library. Nearby, you’ll find a Cragged Rock you can climb down, and then a second one off of the next platform. This will put you at the feet of the giant Shar statute.

Behind the feet, you’ll find a ritual circle and a book with some interesting information. Next, interact with the Broken Effigy, and a rat will spawn. You can use the Speak with Animals spell to interact with it if you wish, but if you want to save Yurgir, then you will end up fighting it regardless.

When attacked the rat will spawn a lot of friends. Use Shadowheart’s or a Cleric’s Spirit Guardians spell, along with other area-of-effect damage to take care of the rat horde. When they have all vanished the original rat will transform into Lyrthindor, the last Dark Justiciar. You can speak to him if you wish, but will need to kill him to fulfill Yurgir’s contract.

After Lyrthindor is dead, return to Yurgir and he realizes that the song is gone and his contract is completed. However, an unhappy Raphael will appear and immediately call him out for using you to do his work. Consequently, the terms are not fulfilled and Raphael sends him back to the House of Hope to sign a new deal.

Relationship with Astarion

Furthermore, Astarion will be incredibly angry that you did not fulfill the agreement he had with Raphael. Now, the cambion will not reveal what the scars on his back mean. You’ll have to pass a Persuasion or Deception roll (both 14 DC) to convince Astarion to remain in the party. Additionally, if you are in a romance with Astarion, then saving Yurgir will end your relationship with him, regardless of whether you convince him to stay.

You can still discover the purpose of the scars on Astarion’s back during Act 3. Head upstairs at Fraygo’s Flophouse and you’ll find two other vampire spawns talking about the Black Mass ritual. However, this will not repair your romance with him.

Finally, the only way to save Yurgir and avoid Astarion’s disapproval is by completely preventing Astarion from ever speaking with Raphael in Act 2. Leave him out of your active party when at the Light Light Inn until after you see the scene where Raphael is speaking to Mol. Additionally, leave Astarion back at camp before approaching the Grand Mausoleum for the first time.

Finding the House of Hope with Help from Yurgir

You won’t see Yurgir again until mid-to-late Act 3, depending on how you play the game. You’ll meet up with Raphael again at Sharess’ Caress, where he will offer you the Orphic Hammer in exchange for the Crown of Karsus after you’ve defeated the Absolute. If you refuse, then you may wish to find a way to break into Raphael’s domain to steal it.

Therefore, during a Long Rest after this encounter, Yurgir will appear and tell you to visit Helsik at the Devil’s Fee. With her help (or by doing it yourself) you can find your way into the House of Hope.

Additionally, after you’ve ransacked your way through the House of Hope and attempt to leave, Raphael will appear to stop you. He will summon Yurgir to his side for the fight, but if you saved Yurgir, then he will automatically switch sides.

However, if you chose to kill Yurgir back in the Gauntlet of Shar, then there is still the possibility that you can convince him to change sides and fight with you against Raphael. Accomplishing this will require that you pass a 30 DC Persuasion check.

Yurgir Can Become an Ally

Finally, the last major consequence of your efforts to save Yurgir in Baldur’s Gate 3 is that you can earn Yurgir’s pledge to help you help you in the final battle as an ally. You do this by getting him to switch sides in the fight against Raphael and making sure he survives the battle.

Yurgir is one of a handful of potential allies that can be summoned directly onto the battlefield during the final confrontation with the Absolute. Yurgir has strong ranged and melee attacks, and he can also choose to become invisible immediately after striking a foe. Additionally, he also has a class action called Concussive Burst that can deal strong Thunder area-of-effect damage in an 8-meter radius, as well as push foes back.

If Yurgir is killed, then he cannot be re-summoned. However, you can choose to dismiss him and summon him again at a later point. His HP level will remain the same as when he was dismissed unless healed by a potion or spell.
