How to Get Spear of Night in Baldur’s Gate 3
To get the Spear of Night (X:-820 Y:-753), you need to solve the puzzle, find the book Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger, and open a hidden room, all in the Gauntlet of Shar, Silent Library during Act 2.
The Gauntlet of Shar is an ancient Shar temple. In this location, your task is to gather four Umbral Gems. Once collected, you’ll place them on two pedestals to locate Nightsong and finish a lengthy quest that begins in Act 1. Your journey may lead you to search for both Nightsong and Balthazar, depending on your choices and quest progression.
Nightsong and Balthazar, the latter actively seeking her, can be found in the Gauntlet of Shar—an area situated in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, accessible during Act 2. Whether you are following the main questline or Shadowhert’s quest, you will eventually need to locate either Nightsong or Balthazar. However, it’s worth noting that you have the option to enter this location at any point in Act 2, no matter your current quest journal status.
Gauntlet of Shar Entrance
Nightsong is in the Gauntlet of Shar, and you can access the temple by heading north from the House of Healing, near the Grand Mausoleum fast travel portal. You will find Raphael at the entrance, warning you about a formidable beast within and requesting assistance dealing with his longstanding enemy. You must face this powerful foe to discover Nightsong’s whereabouts. Regardless of your choices, you can now enter the crypt and the ancient temple of Shar as part of the Nightsong Quest.
Loot the mausoleum area and go further. The ancient temple of Shar is behind the hidden door next to the Kethrick Thorh Gobelin. To open the hidden door, you’ll need to pass an automatic perception check and uncover the three buttons each under one of the paintings in the room. Press the buttons as follows:
- Moonrise Towers
- Grief
- General
Next, enter the Gountled of Shar by stepping on the platform and pressing the purple gem to be transported inside.
Gauntlet of Shar Puzzle
Now you have two choices: solve the Statue of Shar Puzzle or take longer proud and go west until you find the Shar trials.
Upon entering, you’ll encounter a Shar statue surrounded by a globe and several side rooms. Approach cautiously, as getting too close to the statue triggers an immediate response, rendering you unconscious. Each room features a sarcophagus, a trap, and a lever capable of lowering the hanging purple braziers scattered around the statue. Your objective is to lower all braziers by manipulating the levers, extinguishing the light until the room is completely shrouded in darkness. Once achieved, you can safely interact with the globe in front of the statue to solve the puzzle. Subsequently, the main door behind the statue will open, allowing you to progress further into the Gauntlet of Shar.
This is not the only puzzle you will need to solve. Further north, you’ll encounter a glowing Ancient Altar in the middle of the temple, with a missing orb called the Umbral Gem. One will be already inserted, and one is missing. You must find all four to get to the inner sanctum and locate Nightsong.
Nightsong and the Sharran Trials
To find Nightsong and complete the quest, you must obtain the remaining Umbral Gems and complete the four Sharran Trials. However, to get the Spear of Night to kill Nightsong, you can head straight to the library in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How To Use The Spear Of Night in Baldur’s Gate 3
The main use for the Spear of Night in Baldur’s Gate 3 comes at the end of the Gauntlet of Shar, when you enter the Shadowfell and discover the secret of the Nightsong. You will come to a major crux in the road for Shadowheart’s character development. Will she destroy the Nightsong and remain devoted to Shar? Or save the Nightsong and perhaps find another path?
This decision has a stark effect on the Spear of Night. If you use the spear to destroy the Nightstong, then you get to keep the Spear. However, you almost immediately get a better version called the Spear of Evening.
On the other hand, if Shadowheart can be persuaded to spare the Nightsong, then she will throw away the Spear of Night and it will be lost forever. Again, though, you will receive a better version called Selune’s Spear of Night shortly after.
Either way, you are not likely to equip the Spear of Night to a party member because you will receive a much better option by the end of the quest. Nevertheless, the Spear of Night is a crucial quest item, without which you cannot confront the Nightsong.
