Hidden Overpowered Weapon Combos in Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game full of powerful weapons and armor, but some combinations are more devastating than others. Picture harnessing the spellcasting prowess of Quarterstaffs, coupled with the defense offered by a Shield. Alternatively, envision the damage output of ranged combatants using dual-wielding weapons. In this article, Hidden Overpowered Weapon Combos in Baldur’s Gate 3, we will reveal some of the most hidden combinations you aren’t using.

Quarterstaff and Shield
The Quarterstaff and Shield classic combo is a great all-around option for spellcasters who want to deal damage and protect themselves at the same time. The quarterstaff provides good passive benefits, while the shield gives you a high Armour Class (AC) and allows you to reduce the chances of being hit.
However, not all classes are proficient in shields. The easiest way to solve this issue, especially for spellcasters, is to choose the Human or Half-Elf race. These races can equip a shield instantly through the Civil Militia feature, which grants additional AC and helps with attack avoidance.
You can take advantage of this shield combination on almost all companions, including Gale. Gale is a default Wizard who struggles with survivability but equipping him with the Viconia’s Walking Fortress shield increases his AC by +3. With Mage Armour and this shield, Gale has 18 AC, which is nearly as much as heavy armor users without any other AC-boosting equipment.
Consider the quarterstaff and shield a hidden overpowered weapon combination that you should use in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Dual Hand Crossbows
Hand crossbows are already powerful in Baldur’s Gate 3, but using two at the same time is even more so. This hidden weapon combo is possible because they are light, one-handed martial ranged weapons. These properties allow you to dual-wield Hand crossbows and take advantage of an off-hand attack. This is especially useful since Larian Studios changed off-hand ranged attacks in Patch 4.
The most effective build for this combination is the Rogue Thief or Astarion build. While rogues don’t have martial weapon proficiency, they do have hand crossbows. At level 3, this build unlocks an additional bonus action via the Fast Hands subclass feature. Most players consider the only option for the bonus action attack to be melee dual-wielding, but it works with ranged weapons as well.
The ideal weapons for this combo are the Hellfire Hand Crossbow and Hand Crossbow +2. The Hellfire Hand Crossbow gives you a free level 3 Scorching Ray and +2 damage. With two bonus actions, you gain utility and firepower without having to play in melee range. This makes it a secretly overpowered weapon combo that you should consider on your next playthrough in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Trident
Tridents aren’t usually considered top-tier weapons in Baldur’s Gate 3, but the Legendary Trident Nyrulna is a game-changer for Berserker Barbarians. Tridents are martial melee weapons with the thrown property, which means you can use them as projectiles. This synergizes perfectly with the Barbarian’s Enraged Throw skill. Since the damage of thrown weapons is the same as melee weapon damage, you won’t lose any damage by throwing Nyrulna.
In addition, Nyrulna has unique properties that increase your movement speed and return the weapon to your main hand after it’s thrown. One of the main weaknesses of Barbarians is their lack of area damage, but Nyrulna solves this problem by dealing 3d4 thunder damage in a 6-meter blast radius when thrown.
Overall, Nyrulna is a hidden overpowered weapon combination that’s perfect for Berserker Barbarians or the Karlach companion. It gives you speed, ranged utility, and area-based damage, all without having to reequip a weapon after a throw.
Glaive
Glaives are two-handed martial melee weapons with the Extra Reach property, which extends your opportunity attack range to 2.5 meters. You can also take the Sentinel feat for a powerful build combination. Sentinel gives you three special features: Vengeance, Snare, and Opportunity Advantage. The best of these is Vengeance, which allows you to make a reaction attack against an enemy who has attacked an ally in melee range.
For two melee damage dealers, equip a glaive and take the Polearm Master feat. This feat gives you a bonus action to attack with the butt of your weapon and makes an opportunity attack when a target comes within range.
This combination creates a synergist effect between two melee builds. Consider combining Lae’zel Fighter and Karlach, using the Fighter build for protection. Now anyone who comes near either character is thwarted with attacks of opportunity, essentially dealing free damage. This allows you to play an offensive, aggressive defender in combination with another melee character.
