How to unlock and fly Thestral Mount in Hogwarts Legacy? This ominous-looking beast is probably one of the most unique of many mount options.
Thestral is a majestic, magical beast known from Harry Potter books. Only those who have witnessed death and gained an emotional understanding of what death means can see them. This guide explains what quests you need to complete to unlock Thestral Mount and how to fly on your new companion.
How to unlock and fly Thestral Mount?
Firstly, you must own the Dark Arts Pack (included in Deluxe Edition, Collector Editions and sold separately after 10th February) to be able to unlock this exclusive mount.

Secondly, in Hogwarts Legacy, you must complete The High Keep main quest to unlock and fly on Hippogriff and Thestral Mount. The mission is very engaging, full of Hogwarts Legacy Lore and useful loot for players to collect. The quest requirements are:
- Complete Professor Garlick’s Assignment I mission
- Unlock Wingardium Leviosa Spell
During The High Keep main quest, you need to help Natty investigate a case of beast poaching at the ruins of a castle.
When you arrive at Folbarton Castle, you learn that poachers captured two Hippogriffs, Highwing and Onyx. Ensure you check all the chests and side rooms during the quest. If you want to speed the quest up, you can use the Disillusionment spell to sneak your way to the end. You’ll eventually start a cutscene with Highwing the Hippogriff and unlock the new mounts!
Now, all you need to do is go to your gear inventory, and on the right, in the mounts slot, you should be able to pick your new Thestral! Flying Mounts can travel on the ground and fly.
If you pre-ordered the game, you also unlock Onyx Hippogriff.
