The First Descendant: All External Component Sets

This guide explains external component, how they impact your build, and lists the bonuses of all Sets in The First Descendant.

External Components might seem inconsequential compared to the all-important Reactor piece, but in The First Descendant, they play a huge role in determining your character’s survivability. They can be tricky to parse because you’ll collect so many of them as you level your characters. This external components guide will explain the available component slots, how to equip them, and list all the currently available sets in The First Descendant.

This guide has been updated for Hotfix 1.0.5 of The First Descendant.

What are the External Components of The First Descendant?

In The First Descendant external components are additional armor or gear pieces which will passively boost your character’s survivability. They can increase your HP, DEF, Shield, or elemental resistance.

When you are first starting out in the game external components will drop readily, but in the early levels they won’t offer much protection. Even so, you should equip the best ones you can find and keep switching them out as you level up. Eventually, you will be able to collect higher level components with better stats.

Additionally, the stats and traits found on external components are entirely random. Therefore, if you are looking for ‘best-in-slot’ pieces, farming exactly what you want can take some time. You cannot re-roll traits on your external components like you can on weapons.

Finally, there are Rare and Ultimate external component sets which will grant you extra traits and effects depending on how many pieces you have equipped. Typically, wearing two pieces will get you a single extra effect. Wearing all four pieces from a set will grants you additional traits.

Types of External Components in The First Descendant

These are four slots for different types of external components in The First Descendant:

1. Auxiliary Power
2. Sensor
3. Memory
4. Processor

To see what external components you have equipped or collected, check your Inventory. The four external component slots are listed on the right-hand side beneath the Reactor slot. Click on any one of them and the game UI will shift to display all of your external components. To equip a new component, simply click on the item and drag it to the appropriate slot.

Lastly, you will collect a lot of external components as loot just by playing the game. For any external components you don’t want or need, be sure to mark them as Junk. Then, you can dismantle them and collect useful crafting materials. While some items have set bonuses, not all external components do in the First Descendant. Below, we show you specific areas where you can farm them, mainly from Void Intercept battles.

How to Pick the Best External Components for Your Descendants?

When you’re leveling your character in the First Descendant, the best external components will increase your DEF or Max Shield. Both of these will increase your survivability so you can stay in the fight longer. Don’t worry too much about min-maxing your build as you play through the campaign. Until you hit item level 100, you will be replacing even the gold tier components that you find every 5 levels or so.

After you hit item level 100, it makes the most sense for you to start farming specific drop locations so you can find that strong gold tier piece with the perfect pair of traits. Remember, the traits are generated randomly when they drop and you cannot alter them at the Workbench like weapons. Therefore, the only way to get the stats you want is to repeatedly farm certain missions or bosses.

Furthermore, when you finally reach item level 100, you can start to target certain Ultimate and/or Rare sets that will complement your character build. You’ll want to choose your set wisely, as each one offers bonuses that can boost one Descendant more than another. For example, the Supernova is a fantastic match for Bunny, while the Bravery set is meant for Kyle. Below, we will show you a list of All External Component Sets in The First Descendant.

All External Component Sets and How to Get

There are currently eight Ultimate external component sets and eight Rare external component sets for all in The First Descendant. They all offer a single bonus effect when equipping two of the set pieces. If you can collect and equip all four pieces from a single set, you will unlock multiple additional effects. Hungry Sonic (Ultimate)

All External Component Slayer Set traits and effects:

  • Toxin Resistance +2.8%

  • When using Skill, grants 1 stack of Efflux (up to 50 stacks, lasts for 20s).
  • When using an Enhanced Skill, grants self 1 stack of Wave (up to 10 stacks, lasts for 120s) and 10 stacks of Efflux.
  • Wave recovers MP by 0.2% per stack when hitting an enemy with a Unique Weapon.
  • At 50 stacks of Efflux, converts to Tuning (lasts for 200s).
  • Tuning: Skill Duration +1.79% proportional to Max HP, HP Heal Modifier by +2.83%.

  • For each Frostbite stack inflicted upon enemies, Firearm Critical Hit Damage +1.7%, Skill Critical Hit Damage +6% (up to 10 stacks, 5 seconds duration) at a 30% chance.
  • When defeating an enemy inflicted with Frostbite, inflicts additional damage equivalent to 12.2% of the enemy’s Max HP on enemies within a 2.5 meter radius at a 30% chance.

Ajax – Best External Component Set

The Bravery is the best External Component Bonus for Ajax’s Build because it increases skill duration and lowers skill cooldown. Ajax can stun with Void Walk and process the second portion of this bonus. Additionally, having extra duration based on resources helps keep your barrier active when you have a low MP. Moreover, the two-piece set bonuses help you increase survivability and fit with the builds tank theme.

  • Skill Duration increases proportionally to the ratio of Current Custom Resources to Max Custom Resources, up to +6.6%

Blair – Best External Component Set

The Volcanic set is the best External Component Bonus for Blair Build. It increases skill and power. Moreover, Blair’s skill power increases after reloading, which is useful when combining his ultimate Deadly Cuisine. You can trigger a reload to boost skill power and then launch your huge fireball for incredible damage.

Volcanic set Bonuses:

Bunny – Best External Component Set

The Supernova set is the best External Component Bonus for Bunny Build because you gain a Thunderbolt AOE effect when dealing with Electric Damage. Considering Bunny’s entire kit is electric, this skill triggers frequently, giving you even more AOE damage. Moreover, the set bonus has a low cooldown of 2 seconds and a high chance, adding massive damage to a Bunny Build. Out of all the External Component Sets, this is the strongest for Bunny, but Annihilation is a good secondary choice in The First Descendant.

The Frozen Heart set is the best External Component Bonus for Enzo Build because you reduce skill cooldown and trigger Frozen Heart by buffing allies. Enzo’s passive buffs allies nearby, allowing you to trigger this effect frequently and increasing your overall damage. Out of all the External Component Sets, this is the strongest for Enzo, but Annihilation is a good secondary choice in The First Descendant.

The Annihilation Set is the best External Component Bonus for Esiemo Build because it increases firearm ATK proportional to HP Lost and skill duration. Esiemo will need to play up close and stack HP for survival, which helps to increase Firearm damage and recover resources when HP drops suddenly.

The Venom set is the best External Component Bonus for Freyna Build because it increases Firearm ATK and Skill power based on the number of enemies inflicted with Poison. Freyna’s entire skill kit revolves around poisoning enemies, which is an easy option to increase your overall power with her. Moreover, the two-piece bonus increases toxic skill power, so this is the best set to collect.

The Annihilation set is the best External Component Bonus for a Gley Build because you gain Firearm ATK based off missing HP, which Gley stacks due to having no shields. This allows Gley to play tanky with high HP and frequently receive the four-piece bonus from Annihilation. Players can even purposefully run low HP to take advantage of the four-piece bonus and paired with Vestigial Organ for optimal damage.

The Bravery set is the best External Component Bonus for Jayber Build because it increases skill duration. Increased skill duration is helpful with turrets and Jayber’s bonus that rewards you for using both turrets simultaneously. The Annihilation set is another alternative that works with every character, especially those with high HP.

The Bravery set is the best External Component Bonus for Kyle Build because it increases your max shields and HP recovery. Moreover, you gain increased recovery when a stunned enemy is defeated. This helps keep Kyle using abilities and increases survivability. Out of all the External Component Sets, this is the strongest for Kyle, but Annihilation is a good secondary choice in The First Descendant.

The Slayer set is the best External Component Bonus for Lepic Build because it recovers MP and Overkill resources when killing an enemy after using a Traction grenade. The Towed buff is the suck-in effect from traction grenade and is unique to Lepic, giving him incredible resource sustain and faster up time on his ultimate Overkill.

The Annihilation Set is the best External Component Bonus for Sharen Build because it increases Firearm ATK in ratio to Max HP. You will play up close and personal with Sharen and need a massive HP Pool to keep her alive. This helps, in addition to the four-piece set, to grant MP recovery when below 50% HP.

Thus, you get more uptime on important buffs and debuffs, which is the central theme of Yujin’s build. Moreover, you can reduce a cooldown randomly when defeating an enemy inflicted with a stun. Yujin’s skills have longer cooldowns, and this can be helpful. Out of all the External Component Sets, this is the strongest for Yujin in The First Descendant.
