Baldur’s Gate 3: All Allies You Can Gather

The Gather Your Allies quest spans the entirety of the game in Baldur’s Gate 3, and this guide will cover them all!

Baldur's Gate 3 All Allies You Can Gather

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Gather Your Allies quest becomes available starting in Act 1 and will last all the way until late Act 3. These allies are individuals who will pledge you their help during the final battle against the Absolute. Some will grant you passive benefits, while others may grant you access to unique class actions or spells. Furthermore, others can be directly summoned onto the field of combat.

This guide will cover all of the allies you can gather throughout your playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3. Also included is where to find them, and all of the requirements for recruiting them. Therefore, there will be a lot of spoilers ahead, so proceed with caution!

All Allies You Can Gather in Baldur’s Gate 3

All potential allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 will have different prerequisites to have them join you against the Absolute. Furthermore, some are mutually exclusive. Consequently, this means that there is no way to recruit every single NPC listed here in a single playthrough. For example, if you side with Lorroakan during his conflict with the Nightsong, then you will effectively lose both Dame Aylin and Isobel.

Additionally, a few of the main companions can also be recruited separately as allies. This means that whether you take them in your active party during the last battle or not, you will have access to a unique class action that allows you to summon a small group of fighters on their behalf. The one exception to this is Halsin, who instead grants you a passive boon.

How to Get All Allies in Baldur’s Gate 3

Arabella

Baldur's Gate 3 Arabella as an Ally in Act 3
  • First Location: Inside the Ritual Room, Sacred Pool of the Emerald Grove, Act 1
  • Related Quests: Save the Refugees (Act 1), Find Arabella’s Parents (Act 2)
  • How to Recruit: Side with the Tieflings and Grove in Act 1, and complete the Find Arabella’s Parents in Act 2
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Weavewalker (Condidtion) granted to your full party
    • Arabella’s favour grants affected entities the benefits of Freedom of Movement. Movement Speed can’t be reduced by Difficult Terrain, spells, or magical effects. Also can’t be Paralysed or Restrained

If you want to get Arabella as an ally in Baldur’s Gate 3, this will strongly influence one of the major Act 1 choices you have to make between the Emerald Grove and the Goblin Camp. Arabella cannot be recruited if you do not side with the Tiefling refugees in Act 1, which requires saving the Grove. Moreover, you will have to save Arabella herself after she gets caught trying to steal the Druid’s sacred idol.

Next, in Act 2 you will find a distressed Arabella alone in Reithwin Town, looking for her parents after being separated. Encourage her to go to your camp for safety and then find her deceased parents at the House of Healing. Break the news to Arabella gently and Withers will help her through her grief.

Although you can find Arabella again in the Lower City Sewers of Act 3, finding her again is optional. Fulfill the above conditions, and at the High Hall Courtyard, she will pledge her assistance. Your entire active party will receive the Weavewalker condition, which grants you all the benefits of Freedom of Movement.

Astarion

Baldur's Gate 3 Ascended Astarion
  • First Location: West side of the Ravaged Beach, Act 1
  • Related Quest: The Pale Elf
  • How to Recruit: Recruit Astarion as a companion in Act 1, then in Act 3 let Astarion take Cazador’s place in the ritual to become the Vampire Ascendant
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you ally with Astarion, you cannot ally with Ulma.
  • Ally Bonus: Retinue of the Vampire Lord (Class Action)
    • Allows you to summon 2 Shadows, 2 Giant Skeletons, a Ghast, a Shadow Mastiff and a Werewolf in the final battle.

Given that Astarion is a full companion in Baldur’s Gate 3, it might be surprising that he can also become an ‘ally’ and grant you access to a unique class action that summons an undead horde to battle. However, to unlock this class action requires that you make a major decision regarding Astarion’s personal quest. You must make the more evil choice of letting Astarion ascend and become a Vampire Lord.

This choice will have major consequences on his character, making his attitude much more condescending and power-hungry. Additionally, a romance with him becomes much more unbalanced and less of a partnership of equals. However, he does gain access to a couple of new and improved abilities.

If you’re willing to choose this route, then you will receive the Retinue of the Vampire class action regardless of whether you include Astarion in your active party during the final battles. Using it will summon 2 Shadows, 2 Giant Skeletons, a Ghast, a Shadow Mastiff, and a Werewolf in the final battle. This is a not-insignificant addition to your party at a difficult time, but does require a major moral sacrifice to achieve.

Auntie Ethel

Auntie Ethel reveals her plan during Save Vanta Quest in BG3
  • First Location: Riverside Teahouse in the Sunlit Wetlands, Act 1
  • Related Quests: Get Help from Auntie Ethel and Save Mayrina (Act 1), Save Vanra (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Discover Auntie Ethel’s true form in Act 1, then find her again in Act 3 and kill Lora to strike a new bargain
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Veil of the Weird (Class Action)
    • Channel Auntie Ethel’s magic to render 5 creatures within range Invisible. Invisibility lasts for two turns. Action can only be used once.

If you’re brave enough to ally with Auntie Ethel in Baldur’s Gate 3, then you’ll need to encounter her at the Riverside Teahouse in the Sunlit Wetlands during Act 1. Moreover, if you follow the quest to Save Myrina and pursue the hag into her lair, you’ll get a chance to earn a permanent bonus to any ability score. We highly recommend taking the deal for the hair as this is one of the best bonuses in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The next step to gather Ethel as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 comes during Act 3. Meet Lora at the Basilisk Gate Barracks in the Lower City, and she will ask for help finding her daughter Vanra. Then, head to the The Blushing Mermaid and speak to Captain Grisly. ‘Grisly’ will claim Lora is a delusional, dangerous threat and promises you gold if you kill her. If you do so, and agree to stay out of Ethel’s business, then she’ll give you the gold and agree to help you in the final fight.

However, know that killing Lora will lock out the Save Varna quest reward which includes the legendary Rapier Duellist’s Prerogative. But if you’re willing to make that sacrifice, then Ethel’s Veil of the Weird class action will allow you to turn 5 creatures invisible at once.

Barcus Wroot

Barcus Wroot in Baldur's Gate 3
  • First Location: Tied to a windmill blade by goblins in the Blighted Village.
  • Related Quests: Rescue the Gnome and Save the Grymforge Gnomes (Act 1), Rescue Wulbren (Act 2), Deal with the Gnomes, Avenge the Ironhands, and Save the Gondians (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Save Barcus twice in Act 1, Wulbren, in Act 2, and the Gondians in Act 3. Advocate for Barcus to become their leader.
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you side with Barcus, then Wulbren will not become an ally, even if he is alive. However, they both provide the same bonus.
  • Ally Bonus: Ironhand Grenadiers (Class Action)
    • Allows you to summon 2 Ironhand Grenadiers, who can throw blinding bombs and shoot Smokepowder Arrows.

Recruiting Barcus Wroot as an ally in Baldur’s Gate 3 will take quite a bit of effort throughout every single Act of the game. Act 1 starts simple, where you need to save Barcus from the goblins who have tied him to a windmill. Defeat the goblins at the Blighted Village and then use the Brake lever to free Barcus. Next, save him and the other gnomes from Nere in the Grymforge.

In Act 2 you’ll need to save his friend Wulbren from Moonrise Towers Prison, before meeting up with both again at Angleiron’s Cellar in Act 3. The tricky part here will be saving all of the Gondians from the Iron Throne, so that you can disable the Steel Watch Foundry. Afterward, the Ironhand Gnomes will confront the Gondians. You need to advocate for Barcus as the new leader, and he will finally ally both groups with your party.

Bhaal

Baldur's Gate 3 Bhaal thumbnail
  • First Location: Temple of Bhaal, Act 3
  • Related Quest: The Urge
  • How to Recruit: Only available on a Dark Urge origin
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: A Most Bloody Inheritance (Condition)
    • You can cast Stunning Gaze, and your Critical Hit Attack Roll requirement is reduced by 2. This effect can stack and is granted to the full party.

The God of Murder can become your ally in Baldur’s Gate 3, but only if you are playing as the Dark Urge origin character. As the Dark Urge, you’ll have multiple opportunities throughout the game to either give in to your murderous urges or resist them. However, no matter how you play the game, your choices will climax in your confrontation with Orin at the Temple of Bhaal.

After defeating Orin, a Bhaal Avatar will appear and offer you Bhaal’s final gift. You must accept this gift to gather him as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3. Bhaal will charge you with taking control of the Absolute in his name for his purposes. In exchange, he will grant you and your party a Most Bloody Inheritance condition in your final battle.

However, there is no turning back if you choose to become Bhaal’s Chosen. Should you defeat the Absolute and force it to destroy itself instead of taking it over as your father demands, the consequences for your character are dire. You will become animalistic and a slave to the instincts of The Urge, with no sense of self remaining.

Counsellor Florrick

Baldur's Gate 3 Counsellor Florrick NPC
  • First Location: Waukeen’s Rest, Act 1
  • Related Quests: Rescue the Grand Duke (Act 1), Free Counsellor Florrick (Act 3).
  • How to Recruit: Rescue her from the burning Inn during Act 1, and then break her out of Wyrm’s Rock Prison in Act 3.
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Florrick’s Cohort (Class Action)
    • Allows you to summon two Fist Attackers and a Fist Defender to aid you in the final battle.

The first step to gather Counsellor Florrick as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 is finding Waukeen’s Rest in Act 1 and saving her from inside the burning building. The immediate consequence of this will lead you into the Rescue the Grand Duke quest with Ulder Ravengard, who we’ll cover below. Florrick will reappear in Act 3, where she has been locked up in Wyrm’s Rock Prison. Break her out of her cell and safely escort her through a hole in the wall to the outside. She’ll be thankful for your assistance, and pledge to help you in the final battle.

Furthermore, her Florrick’s Cohort class action will allow you to summon a small party of three fighters to aid you. The two Fist Attackers and one Fist Defender may not have a lot of HP or strong attacks, but they can really help distract some of the numerous enemies you encounter in the last gauntlet of fights.

Dame Aylin

Baldur's Gate 3 Dame Aylin after defeating Lorroakan
  • First Location: Inside the Shadowfell, Gauntlet of Shar, Act 2.
  • Related Quest: Find the Nightsong (Act 1, 2, and 3)
  • How to Recruit: Convince Shadowheart to spare the Nightsong in Act 2, then defeat Lorroakan with Dame Aylin in Act 3.
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you ally with Dame Aylin you cannot ally with Lorroakan.
  • Ally Bonus: Sword of the Silverlight (Class Action)
    • Allows you to summon Dame Aylin to aid you in battle

To begin recruiting Aylin you must locate and make your way through the Gauntlet of Shar in Act 2. At the end of the trials, you will travel through a portal to into the Shadowfell. There, you will need to let Shadowheart decide to save the Nightsong.

Following this event, Dame Aylin and Isobel will join your camp as temporary companions. However, to secure her as an ally in the final battle, you’ll have to continue the Find the Nightsong quest in Act 3. At Sorcerous Sundries in Baldur’s Gate you’ll meet Lorroakan, who also wants to steal the Nightsong’s immortality. Join Dame Aylin in her fight against him and you will secure her loyalty.

Consequently, her class action is unique in that it will summon her directly to the battlefield. This is a fantastic bonus, as Dame Aylin is quite formidable in battle with strong attacks and defense.

Dammon and Owlbear

Baldur's Gate 3 Dammon at Last Light Inn thumbnail
Baldur's Gate 3 Owlbear Cub in Camp
  • First Location: The Hollow in the Emerald Grove (Dammon) and the Owlbear Cave/Nest (Owlbear cub) both in Act 1.
  • Related Quests: Save the Refugees (Act 1), and Resolve the Abduction (Act 2)
  • How to Recruit: Make sure Dammon survives by siding with the Tieflings in the Grove, and rescue the Owlbear cub from the Goblins
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Battle-Ready Owlbear (Class Action)
    • Allows you to summon the Armoured Owlbear to aid you in battle.

Dammon and the Owlbear as allies are explicitly tied together in Baldur’s Gate 3 and you cannot have one if you haven’t saved the other. Therefore, this means that you must side with the Druid Grove against the Goblins and make sure to save all of the Tiefling refugees. This will keep Dammon alive through Act 1. Additionally, in Act 2 you must make sure to save Isobel and keep her from being kidnapped by Marcus. Again, this will save Dammon and the rest of Last Light Inn inhabitants.

Furthermore, you will need to recruit the Owlbear cub, first by leaving it and its mother alone in their cave. Then, returning to find the mother dead and the cub gone. Next, when you visit the Goblin Camp for the first time you will find the cub being tormented by goblins. Save it, and then when it appears at camp during follow Long Rests treat it kindly. Eventually, it will permanently join you at camp.

Finally, if both Dammon and the Owlbear cub survive until you Confront the Elder Brain, they will both appear at High Hall. Dammon has used a special brew to transform the cub into a fully grown Armoured Owlbear. He can be summoned directly into battle with powerful claw attacks and a hefty amount of HP. However, be aware that the Armoured Owlbear can permanently die during this fight and therefore will not be around during the Epilogue.

Halsin

Baldur's Gate 3 Companion - Halsin
  • First Location: Worg Pens inside the Shattered Sanctum at the Goblin Camp, Act 1.
  • Related Quests: Rescue the Druid Halsin and Save the Refugees (Act 1), Wake up Art Cullagh, Resolve the Abduction and Lift the Shadow Curse (Act 2).
  • How to Recruit: Save Halsin and the Grove from the Goblins in Act 1, then help Halsin restore the Shadow-Cursed Lands in Act 2.
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Spirit of the Land (Condition)
    • The reunited soul Thaniel provides a +1 to all Ability Scores and an additional 2m movement speed to all affected entities. Granted to the full party.

Recruiting Halsin as an ally follows the same path as recruiting him as a full companion in Baldur’s Gate 3. This means that you must save him from the Shattered Sanctum, where he is locked in the Worg Pens in his bear form. Additionally, you must kill the Goblin leaders and save the Emerald Grove. After this, Halsin won’t join you just yet, however. You will need to continue into Act 2 and the Shadow-Covered Lands. There, you will need to complete the quest Wake Art Cullagh, make sure that Isobel isn’t taken, and then save Thaniel to lift the Shadow-Curse.

Following all of that, Halsin will become a permanent companion. Given the vast amount of potential companions in the game, you may or may not use him in your active party. However, if you want to have the Spirit of the Land condition bestowed on your party in the final battle, you must place Halsin in your active party at least once. Otherwise, this excellent bonus of +1 to all Ability Scores and additional movement speed for your entire party will not trigger.

Isobel

Baldur's Gate 3 Isobel Jhannyl's Gloves thumbnail
  • First Location: Last Light Inn, Act 2.
  • Related Quests: Resolve the Abduction (Act 2) and Find the Nightsong (Acts 2 & 3)
  • How to Recruit: Save Isobel from kidnapping and spare the Nightsong in Act 2, then defeat Lorroakan in Act 3.
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you ally with Isobel you cannot ally with Lorroakan.
  • Ally Bonus: Balm of the Moonmaiden (Class Action)
    • Call upon Isobel to offer a furtive prayer to Selûne, healing up to 6 nearby allies (18m range).

As you will discover through the story, Isobel and Dame Aylin are closely tied together and in general if you recruit one you are very likely to recruit the other. The first step to gather Isobel as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 is you must save her from being kidnapped by the Flaming Fist Marcus at the Last Light Inn. The first time you go and speak with her at the Inn, make sure you are prepared because this event/fight will automatically trigger.

Additionally, you must also convince Shadowheart to spare the Nightsong after completing the Gauntlet of Shar. Then, at the end of Act 2 Isobel and Dame Aylin will join your camp as temporary companions. They will come with you into Act 3, where you will have to side with Dame Aylin against Lorroakan at Sorcerous Sundries.

Finally, after you have completed this challenging fight, Isobel will officially become your ally. You will gain access to her Balm of the Moonmaiden class action, which can heal up to 6 nearby allies. However, choose your moment carefully, because this action can only be used once.

Jaheira

Baldur's Gate 3 Druid Jaheira Casting Spell
  • First Location: Last Light Inn, Act 2.
  • Related Quest: The High Harper (Acts 2 & 3)
  • How to Recruit: You must safely recruit Minsc as a full party companion
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Silver Harp Squadron (Class Action)
    • Allows you to summon 3 elite Harper archers into battle.

You can recruit Jaheira as a full party member in Baldur’s Gate 3, but she can also become an ally and provide you with a special class action in the final battle. Recruiting Jaheira requires making sure the Last Light Inn remains safe, and keeping her alive through the battle at Moonrise Towers. She will finally be available as a full companion at the start of Act 3.

Upon reaching the Rivington area you’ll want to follow the steps of The High Harper quest. Multiple steps will follow you into the Lower City, where Jaheira is looking for her former companion Minsc. This will eventually lead to dramatic events at the Counting House, followed by a confrontation in the Lower City Sewers.

Significantly, Minsc must be defeated with a non-lethal strike. Furthermore, you must convince the Emperor to extend the Astral Prism’s protection to him. Once Minsc has become a full-party companion, Jaheira’s status as an ally will be secured. You will then be able to summon a small party of Harper archers one time during the final battle.

Kith’rak Voss

Choosing to Side with Kith'rak Voss in Baldur’s Gate 3
  • First Location: Mountain Pass (briefly seen) and at Camp after completing Crèche Y’llek, Act 1.
  • Related Quests: Help Kith’rak Voss and Free Orpheus (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Claim the Orphic Hammer and free Orpheus, or pass a DC 30 Persuasion or Deception check to convince him to help regardless of freeing Orpheus
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Kith’raki Inferno (Class Action)
    • Command the red dragon of Supreme Kith’rak Voss to breathe a wall of fire onto the battlefield one time only.

Recruiting Kith’rak Voss as an ally requires that you hear him out when he visits your camp towards the end of Act 1, and then find him again at Sharess’ Caress and agree to bring him the Orphic Hammer. Afterward, there are a couple of different ways you can play out the story and still recruit Voss as an ally. First, the most straightforward way is by claiming the Orphic Hammer and using it to free Orpheus. This will automatically earn you Voss’ pledge as an ally.

The second way is similar but does not require you to free Orpheus. You can choose to side with the Emperor, and upon your return from the Astral Prism, Voss will greet you with great anger. He’ll confront you, and you must pass a DC 30 Persuasion or Deception check to convince him to help. If successful, Voss will grudgingly agree that defeating the Netherbrain is more important. However, he vows to be your mortal enemy afterward.

Having Kith’rak Voss will give you access to a one-time-use class action called Kith’raki Inferno. This is essentially a more powerful version of the Wall of Fire spell. Casting it will call down a red dragon to breathe fire onto the battlefield in a 36-meter area-of-effect.

Lorroakan

Baldur's Gate 3 Lorroakan at Sorcerous Sundries
  • First Location: Sorcerous Sundries, Act 3
  • Related Quest: Find the Nightsong (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Help him capture the Nightsong for his own purposes
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you ally with Lorroakan you cannot ally with Dame Aylin or Isobel.
  • Ally Bonus: Lorroakan’s Firestorm (Class Action)
    • Lorroakan uses all the arcane might of Ramazith’s Tower to call down a fiery barrage one time only.

Lorroakan (according to Gale) is a bit of a cad, but a powerful Evocation Wizard in his own right. He has ambitions of immortality that require the use of the Nightsong, and he’s willing to handsomely reward anyone who helps him achieve that goal. The first step to gather Lorrokan as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 will require that you convince Shadowheart to spare the Nightsong during Act 2.

Next, after arriving in the Lower City during Act 3, you’ll need to find Lorroakan by visiting Sorcerous Sundries and choosing the correct portal to reach Ramazith’s Tower. There, you can share the information you have about the Nightsong with him. Then, visit Aylin at your camp and tell her about Lorrokan. She’ll rush to challenge him, and you should return to the Tower as quickly as possible. Choose to side with Lorrokan in the battle and Aylin will call down Moonlight Slivers to aid her.

After Aylin is defeated, Lorrokan will reward you with the promised gold and also pledge to use the Tower’s power to aid you. During the final battle, you’ll have access to the Lorroakan’s Firestorm. You can use it only once to call down a much more powerful version of the Fireball spell, which will do greater damage in a wider area.

Mizora

Consequences of Saving Mizora in BG3
  • First Location: Camp (only if Wyll has been recruited), Act 1
  • Related Quests: The Blade of Frontiers and Rescue Zariel’s Asset (Act 2) and The Grand Duke (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Save her in the Mind Flayer Colony, then keep Wyll’s pact intact during Act 3.
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Mizora, Agent of Avernus (Class Action)
    • Summon Mizora to rain down powerful infernal sorcery and possibly Disintegrate your foes.

Mizora is Wyll’s Warlock patron, and if you want to recruit her as an ally in Baldur’s Gate 3 you’ll need to save her in Act 2 and then make sure that Wyll does not break his pact in Act 3. You’ll first meet Mizora during Act 1 after you’ve recruited Wyll. However, it’s not until Act 2 that you can take steps to keep her as an ally. During the final assault on Moonrise Towers, you’ll eventually end up in the Mind Flayer Colony.

While there, you need to make sure you save Mizora from the mind flayer pod she is trapped in. As a bonus, you can get the Infernal Rapier as a reward. Next, you’ll need to continue to Wyrm’s Rock Fortress in Act 3, which will advance Wyll’s quest. At a following Long Rest, Mizora will appear and offer Wyll a new, eternal contract. If you break it, she will stay at camp, but will not be available as an ally.

Should Wyll accept the new terms, however, you can speak with her and choose a new dialogue option “If you’re going to be staying, I need something in return.” Then, during the final battle, you will have the option to summon her into the fight. Mizora is a formidable spellcaster and has access to powerful spells including Disintegrate, Haste, Hold Monster, and Eyebite.

Mol

Baldur's Gate 3 Mol tiefling refugee
  • First Location: Emerald Grove, Act 1
  • Related Quests: Save the Refugees (Act 1) and Find Mol (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Save the Tieflings in Act 1, observe her interaction with Raphael in Act 2, steal her contract from the House of Hope and return it to her in Act 3.
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Fetcher’s Favour (Condition)
    • Your full party can cast  Rays of Fire, reduce all Fire damage by 5, and gain an additional 1d4 to Charisma Checks and Saving Throws.

Mol is an orphaned Tiefling child at the Emerald Grove, and if you stay on her good side she can potentially become a surprisingly helpful ally. The first step to gather her as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 will require that the Tiefling refugees all survive. In Act 2 you’ll encounter her again at the Last Light Inn, where she’ll be playing a dangerous game with Raphael. You’ll see nothing more of her after that, until Act 3.

You can then discover Mol in the Guildhall. Speak to her and you will discover that she signed a contract with Raphael to survive the Shadow-Cursed Lands. If you’ve already met Raphael at Sharess’ Caress, then you are probably trying to find a way into the House of Hope. While there, make sure to check in the vault and take Mol’s Contract with you. Return it to her at the Guildhall and pass a 15 DC Persuasion check to convince her to help you save the city.

Her reward before the final battle will be a passive condition that will give all of your active party a free cast of the Rays of Fire spell. Additionally, it will reduce all Fire damage by 5, which is helpful when you fight that dragon. Finally, you also gain an additional 1d4 to Charisma Checks and Saving Throws.

Nine-Fingers Keene

Nine-Fingers Keene Guildhall leader and potential ally
  • First Location: The Guildhall, Act 3
  • Related Quests: Aid the Underduke (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Side with the Guild when it is attacked by the Zhentarim.
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you ally with Nine-Fingers and the Guild, you cannot recruit the Zhentarim.
  • Ally Bonus: Guildmaster Keene’s Fixers (Class Action)
    • Summon two elite assassin mercenaries from the Guild’s ranks.

Nine-Fingers Keene is the leader of the Guild in the city of Baldur’s Gate, and to earn her favor as an ally, you must side with the Guild when they are attacked by Zhentarim in Act 3. Moreover, if you’ve recruited Jaheira, then her personal quest The High Harper will direct you to seek out the Guildhall. There, you can meet Nine-Fingers for the first time and she will give you information about Minsc.

Follow the steps of that quest and along the way, you will pick up Aid the Underduke. After you are finished dealing with the Stone Lord, return to the Guildhall. You’ll find the Guild under attack by the Zhentarim, who are seeking to take control of the city’s criminal underbelly. Side with Nine-Fingers and she will gratefully pledge her help when the time comes. At any point during the final battle, you will have the option to summon two of her elite assassin mercenaries into the battle.

Valeria

Baldur's Gate 3 Investigator Valeria hollyphant
  • First Location: Open Hand Temple, Act 3
  • Related Quests: Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders, Investigate the Murders, and Impress the Murder Tribunal (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Reject the Murder Tribunal and rescue Valeria
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: The Watch (Class Action)
    • Summon the three Watcher Guardians to protect their home.

Investigator Valeria is a Hollyphant you can discover investigating a murder in the Open Hand Temple during Act 3. This will lead to a long series of quests including Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders and Investigate the Murders. Along the way, you will discover evidence that the cult of Bhaal has returned to the city. Eventually, the quests will lead you to Candulhallow’s Tombstones and the discovery of the Murder Tribunal.

While there you will have the chance to prove yourself to the cult and they will offer Valeria as a living sacrifice for you to kill in cold blood. Refuse to become an Unholy Assassin, and you will have to fight the members of the Tribunal to the death. This will give you some great gear pieces like Sarevok’s Horned Helmet and the Sword of Chaos.

Finally, set Valeria free and she will become an ally. During the final battle, you will receive The Watch class action, which will allow you to summon three fighters into battle.

Rolan

BG3 Rolan as a potential ally
  • First Location: The Hollow inside the Emerald Grove, Act 1
  • Related Quests: Save the Refugees (Act 1), Find Rolan in the Shadows (Act 2), and Find the Nightsong (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Keep him and his family alive during Acts 1 & 2, then side with Dame Aylin against Lorrokan in Act 3
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you ally with Rolan, then you cannot ally with Lorrorkan.
  • Ally Bonus: Rolan’s Firestorm (Class Action)
    • Call upon Rolan to unleash a fiery barrage from the heights of Ramazith’s Tower.

If you recruit Rolan as an ally in Baldur’s Gate 3 his available class action is much the same as if you recruited Lorrokan. In-game this is mostly due to the position each takes as the master of the Tower at the end of their two different storylines. Additionally, they are mutually exclusive. You cannot recruit them both in a single playthrough.

The first step to gather Rolan as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3, will occur when you first encounter him and his siblings in the Emerald Grove. Convince them to stay and fight, and then fight for the Grove against the Goblins. Later on in Act 2 make sure to save Isobel so the Last Light Inn remains standing. Additionally, you’ll need to save Rolan from the Shadow-Cursed Lands and then save his siblings from Moonrise Towers Prison.

Finally, in Act 3 you can find him as Lorrokan’s new apprentice at Sorcerous Sundries. During the final steps of Find the Nightsong, side with Dame Aylin against Lorrokan. After Lorrokan’s defeat, he will take over Ramazith’s Tower and pledge his help in the future. The up-scaled version of Fireball that he can cast from the heights of the Tower will be a huge boon.

Shadowheart

Baldur's Gate 3 Shadowheart Blessed by Shar
  • First Location: Mind Flayer Pod, Prologue
  • Related Quests: Find the Nightsong (Act 2) and Investigate the House of Grief (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Have Shadowheart to kill the Nightsong, then overthrow Viconia DeVir
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you recruit Shadowheart as an ally, then you cannot recruit Viconia DeVir
  • Ally Bonus: Nightbringer’s Shadow Adepts (Class Action)
    • Summon two Sharran Novices and two Sharran Fidelians in the field of battle.

Shadowhear is an example of another full companion who can also become an ally and grant you a unique class action. However, to do so you will have to make sure that Shadowheart follows the more evil path in her personal quest. She must prove her loyalty to Shar and kill the Nightsong after completing the Gauntlet of Shar in Act 2.

The first step to gather Shadowheart as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to visit the House of Grief in Act 3. You will confront the Sharran leader Viconia DeVir, who will demand you give her the artefact and hand over Shadowheart. You will need to speak on Shadowheart’s behalf, passing a 20DC Persuasion check and testifying to how Shar has blessed her.

This will lead to a fight among the Sharran cultists, between Shadowheart and Viconia. When you have beaten DeVir and Shadowheart has taken her place you will have earned the right to call some of her fighters into the final battle.

Strange Ox

Baldur's Gate 3 Strange Ox in Rivington
  • First Location: The Hollow within the Emerald Grove, Act 1
  • Related Quests: Help the Devilish Ox (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Do not attack the Ox in Acts 1 or 2, then help smuggle it inside the city in Act 3
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: An Apple a Day (Class Action)
    • Summon a shapeshifting monstrosity that can adopt the aspect of several monsters and beasts.

To recruit Strange Ox as an ally in Baldur’s Gate 3 you must initiate conversation using the Speak with Animals spell or potion, and refrain from attacking him. In Act 1 you can locate him in the Emerald Grove. Then in Act 2, he’ll be inside the barn at the Last Light Inn. Finally, in Act 3 you’ll be able to discover him very early on by taking a right after arriving in Rivington. You’ll discover him one last time inside a small barn in the southeast corner of the map.

Take care not to antagonize him again. When he asks for your help getting into the city, agree. He will transform into an apple and fit into your pocket. That’s all you have to do. When you enter the Lower City for the first time, you will get a notification that you’ve completed Help the Devilish Ox. You’ll immediately be rewarded the Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring and later will be able to summon the Strange Ox in his true form during the final battle.

Ulder Ravengard

BG3 Duke Ravengard Wyll's father
  • First Location: Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, Act 3
  • Related Quests: Rescue the Grand Duke (Acts 1, 2 & 3) and Save the Gondians (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Rescue the Duke from the Iron Throne
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Rallied (Condition)
    • The galvanising word and will of Duke Ravengard runs hot through your veins – granting you 30 temporary hit points.

You first hear of Duke Ulder Ravengard and learn that he is Wyll’s father during your visit to Waukeen’s Rest in Act 1, but won’t be able to recruit him as an ally until you meet him in Act 3. You can find him at Wrym’s Rock Fortress under the control of Gortash. Following a brief interaction with Mizora, when you return to camp she will have a new proposition for Wyll. In exchange for signing a new eternal pact with her, she will tell Wyll how to save his father.

Even if you choose to reject the new pact, you can still find and save Duke Ravengard. However, it will be more difficult because Mizora will work against you. The Iron Throne prison is a difficult timed event in the game, as you attempt to rescue all of the prisoners inside. Afterward, the Duke will not only join you as a camp follower. Additionally, he will become an ally with a passive condition that will grant you 30 temporary hit points at the start of the battles at High Hall.

Ulma

BG3 Ulma leader of the Gur as a potential ally
  • First Location: Gur Camp at Rivington, Act 3
  • Related Quest: Investigate Cazador’s Palace (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Defeat Cazador and stop the ritual. Do not let Astarion ascend.
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you ally with Ulma, you cannot ally with Astarion.
  • Ally Bonus: Gur Huntwardens (Class Action)
    • Summon three Gur Monster hunters to aid you in battle.

You may briefly encounter a Gur Hunter near the Riverside Teahouse in Act 1, but you’ll finally get to meet the group properly in early Act 3. In the northeast portion of Rivington you’ll find the Gur Camp, where Ulma leads a small band attempting to save their kidnapped children. Speak with her and you’ll discover that it was Astarion who did the kidnapping, and the children are now being held captive by his master Cazador.

This conversation will immediately lead to the quest Investigate Cazador’s Palace. Once you reach the Lower City you can seek out the Szarr Palace, which will lead to a confrontation between Astarion and Cazador. To recruit Ulma as an ally, however, you will need to play out the story so that not only is Cazador defeated, but Astarion does not ascend. Your decision about what to do with the vampire spawns will not affect this result.

Therefore, so long as Cazador is dead and Astarion is not the Vampire Ascendant, then you will be able to use the Gur Huntwardens class action in the final battle to summon three additional Gur fighters to your aid.

Viconia DeVir

BG3 Viconia DeVir as a potential ally
  • First Location: House of Grief in the Lower City, Act 3
  • Related Quests: Find the Nightsong (Act 2), Investigate the House of Grief and Surrender Shadowheart to Viconia (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Spare the Nightsong in Act 2, then turn Shadowheart over to Viconia in Act 3
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you ally with Viconia then you cannot ally with Shadowheart.
  • Ally Bonus: Nightbringer’s Shadow Adepts (Class Action)
    • Summon two Sharran Novices and two Sharran Fidelians in the field of battle.

Viconia DeVir is the Mother Superior of the Sharren cultists in the city of Baldur’s Gate and if you want to recruit her as an ally, then it will require the major sacrifice of one of your companion characters. The first step to gather Viconia as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to convince Shadowheart to spare the Nightsong after completing the Gauntlet of Shar in Act 2.

Next, you’ll need to seek out the House of Grief in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate during Act 3. Here you will meet and be confronted by Viconia. She’ll chastise Shadowheart for her betrayal of Shar and make you an offer. Turn over Shadowheart to her, and you can leave freely and count Viconia as an ally in the coming battle against the Absolute.

All you have to do is accept, and Shadowheart will be taken away. You will permanently lose her from your party, and she will no longer be available as a companion. In exchange, you will be able to summon four Sharran fighters to aid you during the final battle.

Volo

BG3 Bard Volo thumbnail
  • First Location: Sacred Pool inside the Emerald Grove, Act 1
  • Related Quest: Rescue Volo (Act 1)
  • How to Recruit: Save him from the Goblin Camp in Act 1, then rescue him again at the Grey Harbor Docks in Act 3
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Volo’s Guide to Monsters (Condition)
    • Your full party will gain +2 to Attack Rolls, Saving Throws, and Ability Checks during the final battle.

Volo can seem an annoying nuisance, but he is absolutely worth recruiting as an ally because the passive condition he bestows on the party at the end will give you a +2 to Attack Rolls, Saving Throws, and Ability Checks. You first find Volo attempting to interview a bear at the Sacred Pool inside the Emerald Grove. However, his Rescue Volo quest picks up when you later discover him at the Goblin Camp. He’s been taken captive and you will need to enter the Shattered Sanctum to rescue him.

Afterward, he will become a camp follower for a time and you can get the permanent bonus Volo’s Erstaz Eye if you’re brave enough. He will eventually leave, but you’ll run into him again in Act 3. At the Grey Harbor Docks, just outside the Steel Watch Foundry, you’ll discover Volo tied to a cart full of smokepowder barrels at the mercy of an angry mob. Defeat the crowd without killing Volo (that cart is quite flammable) and he will return to your camp and become an ally at High Hall.

Wulbren Bongle

BG3 Wulbren Bongle as a potential ally
  • First Location: Moonrise Towers, Act 2
  • Related Quests: Rescue Wulbren (Act 2)
  • How to Recruit: Rescue Wulbren from Moonrise Towers Prison in Act 2, then disable the Steel Watch and side with Wulbren
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you side with Wulbren, then Barcus will not become an ally, even if he is alive. However, they both provide the exact same bonus.
  • Ally Bonus: Ironhand Grenadiers (Class Action)
    • Allows you to summon two Ironhand Grenadiers, who can throw blinding bombs and shoot Smokepowder Arrows.

You’ll first learn of Wulbren Bongle from Barcus if you save him from the Goblins in Act 1, but you won’t officially meet him until you find him in Moonrise Towers Prison in Act 2. If you meet up with Barcus at the Last Light Inn first, he will ask you to Rescue Wulbren. The best way to go about this is to kill the Warden and the guards in her tower and then use tunnels behind the cells to get Wulbren and all the Tieflings out safely.

Next will be a series of quests in Act 3, after meeting up with Barcus and Wulbren in Angleiron’s Cellar. To recruit Wulbren you must complete complete Deal with the Gnomes and Avenge the Ironhands by successfully disabling the Steel Watch. For Wulbren, this doesn’t require you to go to the Iron Throne and rescue all of the Gondians. Either way, you will need to side with Wulbren when the question of leadership comes up. His unique class action will allow you to summon two Ironhand Grenadiers during the final battle.

Yurgir

BG3 Yurgir in Act 3
  • First Location: Gauntlet of Shar, Act 2
  • Related Quests: Break Yurgir’s Contract (Act 2) and Deal with the Devil (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Break his contract by killing Dark Justiciar Lyrthindor in Act 2, then persuade him to fight on your side against Raphael in the House of Hope in Act 3
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Hellstalker Yurgir (Class Action)
    • Summon Yurgir directly into battle during the final confrontation with the Absolute.

Yurgir is a powerful Fiend and makes a great potential ally because he is one of the few that you can summon directly onto the battlefield. He has strong ranged and melee attacks, and he can also choose to become invisible immediately after striking a foe. The first step to gather him as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to help him break his contract with Raphael by killing Dark Justiciar Lyrthindor. This will take place inside the Gauntlet of Shar, and you can also get the Justiciar’s Scimitar from Lyrthindor as well.

Later on in Act 3, you may find yourself in the House of Hope looking for the Orphic Hammer or other loot. After stealing the Hammer, Raphael will arrive to stop you from leaving. He will summon Yurgir to assist him, but you can convince the Fiend to change sides and fight for you. If you do so and defeat Raphael with Yurgir still alive, he will pledge to aid you in the final fight.

Zevlor

Zevlor Emerald Grove
  • First Location: Emerald Grove, Act 1
  • Related Quests: Save the Refugees (Act 1), Find Zevlor (Act 2)
  • How to Recruit: Side with the Grove and save the Tieflings in Act 1, then release Zevlor from the pod in the Mind Flayer Colony and keep him alive
  • Mutually Exclusive: No
  • Ally Bonus: Hellrider Platoon (Class Action)
    • Summon Zevlor and two of his Hellriders to battle.

Zevlor is in charge of leading the Tiefling refugees to the city of Baldur’s Gate, and the first step to gather him as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 will be to save the Emerald Grove from the goblins. Later in Act 2, you find the refugees were attacked in the Shadow-Cursed Lands and have scattered. Zevlor appears to have acted traitorously, and is nowhere to be found. You can eventually locate him near the end of the act, down in the Mind Flayer Colony.

Saving Zevlor will require that you open all of the pods in this room, meaning you will be immediately attacked by mind flayers. You must defeat these enemies and keep Zevlor alive through the fight. Afterward, he explains himself and will much later be available to summon during the final fight against the Absolute. However, he is another character who can permanently perish in this battle. If that happens, his letter will not be available during the Epilogue.

Zhentarim

  • First Location: Shattered Sanctum, Act 1
  • Related Quest: Aid the Underduke (Act 3)
  • How to Recruit: Side with the Zhentarim in their attempt to overthrow the Guild
  • Mutually Exclusive: Yes. If you ally with the Zhentarim, then you cannot ally with Nine-Fingers Keene
  • Ally Bonus: Black Fist Enforcers (Class Action)
    • Summon two members of the Zhentarim to aid you in the final battle

You can meet several different members of the Zhentarim merchants and mercenary group during Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3. Trader Roah Moonglow can be found in the Shattered Sanctum, and a couple of members attempting to transport valuable cargo can lead you to a hideout near Waukeen’s Rest. Roah will show up again at Moonrise Towers in Act 2, as well.

However, the first step to gather the Zhentarim as one of your allies in Baldur’s Gate 3 comes much later in the game, during Act 3. After you visit the Guildhall for the first time, and then locate and resolve their conflict with the Stone Lord, upon your return the Guild will be under attack. The Zhentarim are attempting to take over the organization, and if you side with them in the battle then you will earn their loyalty as an ally.
