Level 1

At level one the Warlock can select their subclass, pick two cantrips, and two spells, along with Background, Skills, and Ability Score. You want to select The Great Old One subclass, pickup light armor, a Quarterstaff, and a shield. Use this if you intend to play the build with Human or Wood Half-Elf which gives a big advantage in survivability via a shield. Below are all the unlocks and recommended spells for the Great Old One Warlock:

  • The Great Old One (subclass) – Mortal Reminder (subclass feature): When you land a Critical Hit against a creature, that creature and any nearby enemies must succeed a Wisdom Saving Throw or become Frightened until the end of their next turn.
  • Frightened (status effect): Target cannot move and also has Disadvantage on Ability Checks and Attack Roll.
Cantrips Selection – Recommendations
  • Eldritch Blast: 1d10 force damage via an 18-meter beam. This is the best cantrip in the game and what we use primarily for damage.  Remember Cantrips do not use spell slots, and Warlocks in particular have very few, so Cantrips and free spells are mostly what we will use for damage this being number one.
  • Mage Hand: Create a spectral hand that can manipulate and interact with objects. You can use it to hurl a mote of fire for 1~10 Damage.
Spell Selection – Recommendations
  • Hellish Rebuke: Take this if you do not have a race like Asmodeus Tiefling that provides this for you. This is a reaction base spell meaning, you can use it when someone attacks you without using an action. Make sure to hit the passives tab on your character’s menu and request “ask.” The reason is, you don’t want to use this spell on a target with 1 health since spell slots are low.
  • Hex: Curse a creature so it takes additional damage whenever you attack it and inflict Disadvantage on Ability Checks with an Ability of your choosing. This spell helps do damage and it can be used as a bonus action. So you can combo this spell with Eldritch Blast and that’s the main offensive gameplay loop of the class.
Eldritch Blast Gameplay and Priorities

The premise of the Best Eldritch Blast Build is simple, Hex and Eldritch Blast repeatedly. You leave your spell slots for Hellish Rebuke, which will provide a reaction. Further levels will optimize this and enhance the damage or add special effects. Further notes on Warlock From here out, you will have very limited spell slots and aren’t meant to use them like Wizards or Sorcerers. Rather, you want to use a couple, one for Hex usually, and then cantrips. You can also fill up your Spell Slots via short rest, so after every fight make sure to short rest to keep this build having the spell slot fuel it needs.

Your overall priority with this build is the following:

  • Complete Prologue

  • Reached Hollowed City/Druid Grove

Level 1 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke

Level 2

The Level 2 Great Old One Warlock will unlock one new spell and select two Eldritch Invocations. Eldritch Invocations are passive features unlocked by your Warlock at various levels. Initially, they help augment the power of your primary cantrip Eldritch Blast. As you progress, they can be powerful spells that do not consume spell slots or other passives and active features. At this level, we suggest taking Armour of Agathys spell, Agonising Blast, and Devil’s Sight Invocations.

Spell Selections – Recommendations
  • Armour of Agathys (spell): Gain 5 temporary hit points and deal 5 Cold damage to any creature that hits you with a melee attack. However, you can only gain temporary hit points from a single source. It is one of the best spells to have early as it increases survivability.
  • Replace Spell (class feature): Grants the ability to change out spells in your spellbook. Unlike other classes, you will not be able to swap spells in and outside of the leveling process. You can experiment with spells and use the leveling process to change based on what you find most effective. However, for this build, we do not need to replace any spell for now.
Eldritch Invocations
  • Agonising Blast (Eldritch Invocation): When you cast Eldritch Blast, add your Charisma modifier to the damage it deals, unless it is negative. This helps deal more damage with your main attack Eldritch Blast.
  • Devil’s Sight: (Eldritch Invocation): You can clearly see in the darkness both magical and non-magical up to 24m. This invocation will allow you to see clearly in the darkness and even engage in combat while enemies cannot see you (in darkness).

Gameplay remains the same at level two with the addition of a great single-target crowd control and a single-target knockback with Eldritch Blast.

Level 2 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys.

Level 3 – Sorcerer (Level 1)

At level 3, we suggest investing a level into the Sorcerer class. To do this, simply click the + sign with two access for multiclass. Select your class then a popup will appear on what you can select. The reason we want to use the Sorcerer is mainly due to the lack of power on Warlock. Warlock will run out of power so it is best to switch to Sorcerer, Draconic Bloodline specifically. Moreover, the Eldritch Blast will keep on scaling on each level granting an extra beam. Furthermore, we will get more powerful cantrips and spells with the Sorcerer class.  

Sorcerer also gets to choose their subclass at level one, select Draonic Bloodline and the Draconic Ancestry: Brass (Fire). You will want to use a Quarterstaff for your weapon and stick to “clothing.” It’s vitally important you do not use any armor on gear slots. The ability score has high Dexterity which will add to our AC total. You can also use spells to pump this up higher, specifically Mirror Image if you have trouble with survivability. At level one, you will have access to four cantrips. You will also have access to two level-one spells along with two very important subclass features.

Draconic Resilience Explained
  • Dragon Ancestry (Brass): Fire is the damage type associated with your dragon ancestor. gain immediate access to the Sleep spell.
  • Draconic Resilience Hit Points: Your Hit Point maximum increases by 1 for each Sorcerer level. This is one reason you will see much higher health than other casters, making the subclass a great choice.
  • Draconic Resilience Armour Class:  Dragon-like scales cover parts of your skin. When you aren’t wearing armour, your Base Armour Class increased to 13. 13 AC passively is a massive benefit to using this subclass. Most spell casters wearing light armor rely solely on Mage Armour to raise Armour Class (AC) to level 13. Then you add your Dexterity modifier typically 2 or 3 and reach 15 or 16. With this build, we can reach 16 Dexterity modifiers, passive Draconic Armour Class, and have 16 AC at the very start of the game wearing cloth. This is the mechanic behind why we don’t use Mage Armour on this specific subclass build.
Sorcerer Cantrip Recommendations
  • Ray of Frost: Call forth a frigid beam of blue-white light and reduce the target’s Movement Speed by 3m.  This is a decent attack to prevent a melee aggressor from closing the distance on you. 
  • Fire Bolt: Ranged fire spell that deals 1d10 fire damage. Simple ranged attack that can be combined with Grease early on for big area damage.
  • Friends: Gain Advantage on Charisma Checks against a non-hostile creature. This spell can be cast while you are Silenced.
  • Shocking Grasp: Melee ability Lightning springs from your hand and prevents the target from taking reactions. You have an advantage when using this spell on creatures wearing metal armor. Used to shut down melee aggressors with important reaction triggers. Consider this your flex spell which you can use something else in this position.
Sorcerer Spell Recommendations
  • Chromatic Orb: Hurl a sphere of energy. It deals 3d8 element damage and creates a surface. This area damage spell is useful to cast at range and control choke points or proc certain elemental effects. The strength of this skill on a Sorcerer is you can use Sorcerery point Twinned and cast it twice even at level 2 with one action. This gives you a ton of power early on and even later in the game.
  • Magic Missile: Create 3 darts of magical force, each dealing 1d4+1 Force to its target. The darts always hit their target. The strength of this ability is its 100% chance of landing. It has far lower damage but is useful when you can target up to three separate enemies or finish someone off when you need a guaranteed hit.

At this level use your Chromatic Orb for small area damage and Magic Missile when you need guaranteed damage. Fire Bolt will hit hard and Shocking Grasp does great in melee range. Use Ray of Frost to deal cold damage which will also allow you to flee a melee target chasing you. Level two will introduce Metamagic which gives your build a lot more power early.

Draconic Sorcerer Gameplay & Priorities

During the early phase of BG3, the Draconic Sorcerer is a powerful spellcaster who should equip a quarterstaff as early as possible. Your primary goal should be to recruit at least one melee heavy-hitter to your party. Spellcasters in BG3 feel weak in the first several levels and you’ll likely want a partner to increase your survivability. Moreover, look to acquire the Elixir of Bloodlust or Potion of Invisibility. Bloodlust helps trigger an extra action on kill and Invisibility helps you stay alive if you’re in trouble.

Your overall priority with the Draconic Sorcerer build is the following:

  • Complete Prologue
  • Recruit Other Companions
  • Reached Hollowed City/Druid Grove
  • Sell, Stock up, complete quest
  • Unlock Withers, respec to proper ability score
  • Progress to level 5

Level 4 – Sorcerer (Level 2)

At level two of Sorcerer, you will unlock Sorcery Points, Metamagic, and one additional spell. We suggest taking Shield spell with Twinned Spell and Distant Spell for metagmagic class passives.

  • Shield: this is a defensive spell that helps when taking pressure with melee. When you are about to be hit by an enemy, use your Reaction to increase your Armour Class Armour Class by 5. You also take no damage from Magic Missile. These effects last until the start of your next turn.

Metamagic lets you manipulate spells to add range, cast on multiple targets, and more. Sorcery Points can be converted into additional Spell Slots, allowing you to cast more spells in between long rests. At level two, you get to select two Metamagic Options out of four: Careful, Distant, Extended, and Twinned. We suggest taking Twinned and Extended.

  • Distant Spell: Increase the range of spells.
  • Twinned Spell: Cast a single target spell on multiple targets.

In the next phase, you get more options, but these are the best at this stage. Twinned combined with Eldritch Blast gives you two casts on a single target which is huge damage early in the game.

Level 4 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys, Sleep, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, and Shield.

Level 5 – Sorcerer (Level 3)

At Level 3 (Sorcerer), you will unlock more metamagic options, Heighted, Subtle, and Quickened Spell. Quickened spell is the obvious choice here because it allows us to use an attack as a bonus action, using one action to cast a spell and one via bonus action. Moreover, at this level, you can learn another spell, along with replacing a spell. You want to learn Darkness and we do not have to replace any spell for now.

  • Darkness: Create a cloud of magical darkness that Heavily Obscures and inflicts Blind to creatures within. Creatures cannot make ranged attacks into or out of it. This spell combines and synergizes perfectly with Devil’s Sight (Invocation). As you cast darkness on yourself, the enemies will not be able to hit you properly. Moreover, due to the Devil’s Sight, you will be able to see properly.

With Quickened Spell, you have a way to cast area-based damage spells with Sorcery Points. Keep in mind, the cost is substantial early with Quickened Costing 3 Sorcery points. Early on, it’s better to use Chromatic Orb twice with Twinned then at level 5 and beyond you have flexibility in Sorcery Point usage. You may also see Burning Hands or Hellish Rebuke on the spell book chart, and some of those spells can be granted passively depending on your race. Dragonborn also has an additional spell, High Elf Fire Bolt cantrip, and so on. So your spell book might look slightly different depending on the race choice you went with for the Best Eldritch Blast Build in Baldur’s Gate 3!

Level 5 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys, Sleep, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, Shield, and Darkness.

  • Misty Step (Spell): Surrounded by silver mist, you teleport to an unoccupied space where you can see up to 18m range. One of the BEST defensive spells early in the game. It’s a teleport when you need it most. Moreover, this spell only requires a bonus action. You can use your action for a high-powered spell, and a bonus action to get away, assuming you have the spell slots.

So far, this build includes both offensive and defensive playability. You rely on simple spells like Chromatic Orb and Eldritch Blast for damage and Shield and Misty Step for survival.

Level 6 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys, Sleep, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, Shield, Darkness, and Misty Step.

Level 7 – Fighter (Level 1)

On level 7, we want to further improve the Eldritch Blast Build by re-switching it. This time, we will select the Fighter class. Select the + sign in the upper right of the leveling screen to add a third class. The Fighter will unlock a subclass at level 3, but we do not need it as we only need the extra action. We will get the Action Surge on Level 2 (Fighter), allowing us to do one more action in a turn.

Moreover, switching to Fighter Class will also require you to select a Fighting Style. With our Eldritch Blast Build, Protection Style is the best choice here as you will be using a Shield at this point. When you have a Shield, impose a Disadvantage on an enemy who attacks one of your allies when you are within 1.5m. However, you must be able to see the enemy.

Level 7 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys, Sleep, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, Shield, Darkness, and Misty Step.

Level 8 – Fighter (Level 2)

With second-level investment into the Fighter class, gives you one new skill, Action Surge.

  • Action Surge: Gain one additional action. This allows the Fighter very early to take multiple actions, which will likely be attacked. Moreover, you only need a Short Rest to replenish this, which can be done twice in the bottom right of your User Interface. Take a Long Rest via camp to fill Short Rest.

With Action Surge, your overall attacks increase, allowing you to deal more damage in a single turn. However, you have to do short rest constantly to reach your full potential. This new action will strengthen this build further as you will be emitting more beams in a single turn with Eldritch Blast.

Level 8 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys, Sleep, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, Shield, Darkness, and Misty Step.

Level 9 – Rogue (Level 1)

At Level 9, we will further multiclass into another class. This time, we will be switching to Rogue mainly for an extra bonus action and a feat. Select the + sign in the upper right of the leveling screen to add the fourth class. At Rogue Level 1, you will also get a passive feature and a Rogue action. Sneak Attack (Melee) can use the enemy’s distraction to deal an additional 1d6 damage. You can use it to enhance the damage by 1d6. Sneak Attack (Ranged) is also no exception as it also provides the same capability on a battlefield.

  • Sneak Attack (Ranged)- Deals extra damage to a foe you have an advantage against. You can also use this attack if you have an ally within 1.5m of the target and you don’t have a disadvantage.
  • Sneak Attack (Melee)- Deals extra damage to a foe you have an advantage against. Also works if you have an ally within 1.5m of the target and you don’t have a disadvantage.
  • Expertise (Passive Feature): Choose two Skills you are Proficient in. Your Proficiency Bonus is doubled for any Ability Check you make that uses either Skill. Select the Intimidation and Performance skills to double them.

Upon putting a level into Rogue, you will also get to choose the Skills. Pick the Sleight of Hand, Intimidation, and Performance skills.

Level 9 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys, Sleep, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, Shield, Darkness, and Misty Step.

Level 10 – Rogue (Level 2)

This level lacks flashy moves. However, it unlocks cunning actions. Instead of using Action Points, use Bonus actions these are similar to normal actions. Cunning Action: Hide is crucial for hiding from enemies by succeeding Stealth checks. You need to be in the dark and avoid enemy sightlines. After that, you can start sneaking using Bonus action to use Sneak Attack. Cunning Action: Dash is important to cover more distance this turn: double your movement speed. Cunning Action: Disengage allows you to retreat without getting caught in a mid-fight.

  • Cunning Action: Dash- Cover more distance this turn: double your movement speed.
  • Cunning Action: Disengage- Retreat safely. Moving won’t provoke Opportunity Attacks.
  • Cunning Action: Hide- Hide from enemies by succeeding at Stealth checks. Stick to the dark and avoid enemy sightlines. Attacking or casting a spell will reveal your location.

These additional bonus action utility items are incredibly useful for mobility and hiding. Next level, the Rogue (Thief) will get another bonus action per turn making it much more likely to use these frequently.

Level 10 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys, Sleep, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, Shield, Darkness, and Misty Step.

Level 11 – Rogue (Level 3)

With a third-level investment into Rogue, we unlock a subclass selection. The Thief is the best due to a bonus action. Below is what you unlock with this selection:

  • Fast Hands (Level 3): Gain an additional bonus action.
  • Second-Story Work (Level 3): You’ve mastered the art of falling and gaining Resistance to Falling damage.

The Fast Hands feature further strengthens this build as you can perform an additional bonus action in your initial turn. With multiple attacks in one turn, you can damage the enemies a lot. Aim to utilize your bonus actions at every turn for potential damage dealing.

Level 11 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys, Sleep, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, Shield, Darkness, and Misty Step.

Level 12 – Rogue (Level 4)

For our last level, we want to further invest in Rogue to push it to Level 4 and earn a Feat. We recommend selecting the Spell Sniper Feat as the final feat of this build. It will allow us to select one of the cantrips for which we recommend Bone Chill. Moreover, as we will be using spells/cantrips with this build, this feat also increases the chances of Critical Hit with spells.

  • Spell Sniper (Feat): Learn a cantrip (Bone Chill), and the number you need to roll a Critical Hit while attacking with a Spell is reduced by 1. This effect can stack.
  • Bone Chill (Cantrip): Prevent the target from healing until your next turn. An undead target receives a Disadvantage on Attack rolls.

Level 12 Spell Loadout: Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Armour of Agathys, Sleep, Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile, Shield, Darkness, and Misty Step.
