This guide focuses on the essential aspects of a Death Domain Cleric build in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) and how to use those powers to your advantage.

Baldur’s Gate 3 build creation is a complex task balancing many factors. In this guide, we explain the new Death Domain subclass for the Cleric class. We will walk you through the most critical decisions and create a powerful build discussing: ability score, level progression, companions, weapons, armor, and consumables.
This build page has been updated for the Patch 8 version of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Cleric Class Guide in BG3
The Cleric class is known for support, healing, and various subclasses. Clerics can play a wide range of roles but generally do well as a spell casting support class due to their spell selections and subclass features. However, you gain access to different subclasses making the class great at melee combat, spell casting, or even tanking.
Why Should You Choose the Death Domain Subclass for the Cleric Class in BG3?
You should choose the death domain Cleric if you want Martial Weapon proficiency, melee damage-focused build, using necrotic damage. Similar to the Oathbreaker Paladin, this is the “bad” Cleric and is perfect for RP.
Everything About the Death Domain Cleric in Baldur’s Gate 3
What makes the Death Domain Cleric Unique is the ability to hit targets with extra necrotic damage, and use cantrips to target two enemies. Moreover, the Death Domain Cleric gains access to Martial Weapons, giving you a powerful melee damage-dealing Cleric build. Once multiclassed to gain Extra Attack, this Cleric can punish enemies with Necrotic damage and bypass resistance due to a subclass feature.
However, the downsides to the Death Domain Cleric are you need to multiclass, lacks heavy armour, and it’s difficult against undead or necrotic immune targets. Below we show you how to play this subclass in a melee domainte build meant to get up close and personal with your enemies in BG3.

Ability Score

The Best Ability Score for Death Domain Cleric Build is 17 Wisdom, 16 Constitution, and 14 Dexerity. Wisdom is used for your spell casting, while constitution is health and concentration saving throws. This build will use medium armour, so 14 Dexterity is recommended.
However, we recommend using a strength-based approach to the Death Domain Cleric. Therefore, consider using the Elixir of Hill Giant Strength at all times. This allows you to leave your Strength at 8, but increase it to 21 at all times depending on crafting materials. If you find that painful to do, drop Wisdom to 15, Constitution to 14, and increase Strength. Moreover, look to increase Wisdom to an even number in Act 1 by getting Auntie Ethel’s Hair a permanent bonus.
For maximum effectiveness, use Elixir of Hill Giant until Act 3. Then use Cloud Giant or Hill Giant Gloves.

Illithid Powers For Death Domain Cleric

The best Illithid Powers for a Death Domain Cleric build are Luck of the Farm Realms, Black Hole, and Cull of the Weak. Luck of the Farm helps with critical hits and burst damage and, combined with Cull of the Weak, can trigger AOE damage passively. Black Hole requires you to take the Astral Tadpole in Act 2, but it sucks in 5 enemies, slows them, and can be recast for free. This is helpful in certain large-scale boss fights with many enemies. Below are the best Illithid Tadpole Powers for the Death Domain Cleric build in Baldur’s Gate 3:
Illithid Powers | Description |
---|---|
Luck of the Far Realms | When you make a successful Attack Roll against a foe, you can change that hit into a Critical Hit. |

Psionic Backlash | When an enemy within 9m casts a spell, you can use your reaction to inflict ld4 Psychic damage to the caster per the spell’s level. |
Blackhole | Area-based suck-in that slows targets. |
Repulsor | Massive area knockback that can hit friendlies. |
Charm | This is the priority power you want to obtain because you can force enemies to attack something else. |

Level 1

With the Cleric class, you will get to choose your subclass right at Level 1, and we will of course be choosing Death Domain. Additionally, with Cleric you will unlock three cantrips and pick three prepared spells. And your subclass will give you one feature, and three domain spells which are always prepared.
Cantrips Selection
- Guidance: The target gains +1d4 bonus to Ability checks.
- Sacred Flame: Engulf a target in a flame-like radiance for 1-8 Radiant damage.
- Bursting Sinew: Explode a corpse, causing it to impale those around it, 1-10 piercing damage.
- Toll the Dead (extra from subclass): Ring the bell of impending doom. If the target is at full health, you deal 1d8 Necrotic damage instead.
Prepared Spells
- Guiding Bolt: 4d6 Radiant damage that grants Advantage on the next Attack Roll against the target.
- Command: Command a creature to flee, move closer, freeze, drop to the ground or drop its weapon.
- Inflict Wounds: Putrefy a creature with Necrotic energy filling your hands, for 3-30 Necrotic damage.
- Sanctuary: You or an ally cannot be targeted until you attack or harm a creature. You can still take damage from area spells.
Subclass Features
- Gain Martial Weapons Proficiency
- Reaper (passive): Your Necromancy cantrips that only target 1 creature can target an additional creature.
- Bone Chill (cantrip): Prevent the target from healing until your next turn. An undead target receives Disadvantage on Attack rolls.
- False Life (spell): Bolster yourself with a necromantic facsimile of life to gain 7 temporary hit points.
- Ray of Sickness (spell): Possibly Poisons the target and deals 2-16 Poison damage.
Gameplay at level one should revolve around using Necrotic Cantrip Toll the Dead or Inflict Wounds in melee range. You can grab a two-handed weapon and medium armour from Lae’zel in the tutorial. Use the Guiding Bolt spell at range for burst damage, and cast Sanctuary on a vulnerable target. Command is your crowd control spell.
Level 2

Next, at Level 2 of the Death Domain Cleric we will get two new subclass features and the ability to choose one new spell.
- Channel Divinity: Touch of Death (subclass feature): When you hit a creature with a melee attack, you can use your Channel Divinity Charge to deal extra 5 + 2 × (Cleric level) Necrotic damage.
- Touch of Death (subclass feature): When you hit a creature with a melee attack, you can use your Channel Divinity to deal extra Necrotic damage.
- Shield (spell): When you are about to be hit by an enemy, use your Reaction to increase your Armour Class by 5. You also take no damage from Magic Missile. These effects last until the start of your next turn.
Now at level two you can start adding increased damage to your melee attacks using Channel Divinity Resource. Therefore, use a combination of melee attacks with Toll of the Dead depending on your spell slots.
Level 3

At Level 3 of the Death Domain Cleric you will get two more always-prepared spells from your subclass, as well as one new spell. Furthermore, with our build we’re going to choose one new spell, and also drop one old spell for a different one.
- Enhance Ability (spell): Bestow a magical enchantment upon an ally. They gain Advantage on Ability Checks with a chosen Ability.
- Spiritual Weapon (swap with Shield): Summon a floating, spectral weapon that attacks your enemies alongside you.
- Blindness (subclass spell): Limit a foe’s sight range. Attack rolls against it have Advantage and the foe attacks with Disadvantage.
- Ray of Enfeeblement (subclass spell): Weaken a foe: they deal half damage with weapon attacks using Strength.
Use Spiritual Weapon with your bonus action to create a distraction an extra damage.
Level 4

Next, upon reaching Level 4 as a Death Domain Cleric you’ll get to choose your first feat and we recommend taking an Ability Improvement for +2 Wisdom. Additionally, you can choose another cantrip and spell.
- Ability Improvement (feat): Wisdom +2
- Thaumaturgy (cantrip): gain advantage on intimidation and performance checks.
- Hold Person (spell): Hold a humanoid enemy still. They can’t Move, Act, or React. Attacks from within 3 meters are always Critical Hits.
At this level, increasing your Wisdom to 19 and Auntie Ethel’s Hair +1 will give you 20 Wisdom. This will help with spellcasting while you continue to increase melee effectiveness.
Level 5

At Level 5 of the Death Domain Cleric, you will get one class feature, one new spell, and two subclass spells. Additionally, we’ll be swapping out one old spell for a better one now that we can access Level 3 spells.
- Destroy Undead (class feature): When you’ve successfully Turned an undead using Turn Undead, it also takes 4d6 Radiant damage.
- Spirit Guardians (spell): Nearby enemies take 3d8 Radiant or 3d8 Necrotic damage per turn, and their Movement Speed is halved.
- Glyph of Warding (spell): Inscribe a circle of arcane glyphs on the ground. When stepped on by an enemy, the selected magical effect will trigger.
- Protection from Energy (swap for Protection from Poison): Touch a creature to grant it Resistance to Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Thunder damage.
- Animate Dead (subclass spell): Animate a corpse to create an undead servant while not in combat.
- Vampiric Touch (subclass spell): Touch an enemy to siphon their life force for 3-18 Necrotic damage, and regain half as many Hit Points. For 10 turns, you can use Vampiric Touch again without expending an additional Spell Slot.

The most important spell is Spirit Guardians with Necrotic Damage. This puts a circle around you dealing tons of necrotic damage. Combine this on turn one holding concentration and charge into enemies, melting them with a passive effect.
Level 6
At Level 6 of our best Baldur’s Gate 3 Death Domain Cleric build you get another Channel Divinity charge, as well as a new spell selection.
- Daylight (spell): Enchant an item to shine like the sun or summon a sphere of sunlight that dispels all darkness around it.
Level 7

At level 7, we recommend to multiclass into a Fighter. The reason is, that you gain weapon fighting, action surge, and feats. This gives you the best output for melee damage combined with powerful spell casting. You can also multiclass into a Paladin, however that would be only to gain access to Divine Smite. Therefore, if you want spellcasting and melee power, follow below.
Next, at Level 7 we’re going to multiclass into Fighter for the remainder of the build.
- Second Wind: You regain 1d10 + Fighter Level hit points.
- Great Weapon Fighting: When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack with a Two-Handed melee weapon, that die is rerolled once.
Level 8
With a second level into Fighter at character Level 8, you’ll get access to a useful class feature called Action Surge.
- Action Surge (class feature): Immediately gain an extra Action to use this turn.
Level 9

Now with three levels into Fighter, we can choose our subclass which will be Battle Master.
Eldritch Knight Subclass Unlocked: Use this subclass if you are NOT playing a High Half-Elf specifically for Booming Blade cantrip. If you’re playing a High Half-Elf, take the Battlemaster subclass. We are assuming Eldritch Knight.
Eldritch Knight Selections
- Booming Blade, Fire Bolt cantrips
- Shield, Chromatic Orb spells
- Longstrider for expanded
Level 10

At character Level 10 we’ll put a fourth level into Fighter and get to choose a feat. For spell take Thunderwave, and feat take Savage Attacker.
- Savage Attacker (feat): When making melee weapon attacks, you roll your damage dice twice and use the highest result.
Level 11
Character Level 11 is where you will get a huge boost in damage from the Fighter class feature Extra Attack.
Extra Attack (class feature): You can make an additional free attack after making an unarmed or weapon attack.
Level 12

Finally, at the final character Level in our best Death Domain Cleric build for Baldur’s Gate 3, we’ll put one more level into Fighter. This will allow you to choose one last feat.
- Alert (feat): You gain +5 to Initiative and can no longer be surprised.
